Bollywood open to Non-filmi musicians

Trends have been changing fast in Bollywood, and the music scenario is also undergoing a lot of transformation due to it. In the new foray of things, we've come across many singers and musicians who are not of the typical industry kind, coming with musical pieces that has been accepted widely and which also gels with the new kind of experimental cinema. If we notice where things stand today, it becomes apparent that non-filmi music brigade is finding an upper hand in the music industry. Some time from now they may also pose as a threat to the established singers.

In the inlay card of the album we can spot the names of the filmi and also non-filmi playback vocalists. Raahat Fateh Ali Khan with 'Tujhe Dekh Dekh' in Kalyug and Shibani Kashyap with 'Zinda Hoon Main' have even superseded the stereotype playback singers of the industry. Both audiences and critics have appreciated the songs alike.

Composer Vishal-Shekhar are of the opinion that if the songs demands a particular kind of voice, they import singers from other territories. As per the song, the voice has to be specified. Also the listeners are always on a look out for something new and fresh, and so a different sounding voice is a welcoming change. Citing the example of Kailash Kher who was new to the industry when he sang 'Allah Ke Bande', they say that his voice suited the track to T though he didn't belong to the industry until then. Even Himesh Reshammiya was not a singer until he turned to the mike for 'Aapki Kashish'. The song turned to a rage. Other singers outside the territory of Bollywood music like Daler Mehndi with 'Rang De Basanti' and Strings with 'Yeh Hai Meri Kahaani' are leading with the songs.

Singer Abhijeet however doesn't agree that the new cult of singers is doing any good to the music scene. He also points out that the song might work as a hit but not the singers. "Everybody is sounding the same. Half the time, I cannot even make out who the singer is. After all, you can get an Abhijeet Sawant every year, but an Abhijeet comes only once in a lifetime. Even if one of us veteran singers do two or three songs a year, it will be bigger and better than all these new ones put together," he says.
