Kashyap: Didn't like Kalki when I first met her

They are the 'black swans' of Bollywood, currently only in the mood for love and of course, cinema. That said, Anurag Kashyap and Kalki Koechlin are hardly alike. In a candid chat just days before they take off to Turkey for their honeymoon, they reveal what makes them tick and what ticks them off...

What were your very first impressions of each other?

Anurag Kashyap: I did not like her when I first met her. I was forced to watch her audition for Dev D. She was a really white, firang looking girl who had these strange posy pictures on her portfolio and I was like, 'I'm not taking her in my film'. But when I saw the audition, I immediately called to ask her when we could meet.

So it was definitely not love at first sight?

Kalki Koechlin: Of course not! I did not even know who he was. I remember picking up the DVD of Black Friday after my audition to find out what the big deal was about this guy.

Who made the first move then?

KK (looks at Anurag): Well, you pursued me for quite some time...

AK: Yes, for two whole weeks. I asked her for dinner every single day! (Laughs)

KK: Well, I was skeptical. He was much older, was divorced and also a dad! And I did not want people to think I 'landed' the director in my very first film!

But marriage was never on the cards, right? You were living in?

KK: I told him if you ever want to get married, it would be in the confines of this little house. And that's almost how it was. We had just 20 close people at the wedding.

Does working with your spouse help, considering you are at you're vulnerable best around each other...

AK: We went 13 whole days without really talking to each other because it really took a toll on us. It was quite an emotional journey.

KK: Yeah, we'd come back home and sleep with our backs to each other sometimes. But a personal comfort level especially helps in a film (That Girl In Yellow Boots) like this.

AK: But now she's a big star and all, so she can manage...

Does he still find time to woo you?

KK: Not really, now that we are married.

AK: But I'm still very much in love with you.

Who wins in a fight and who is more insecure?

KK: I'm the one who has to always go up to him and fix the fight. But we fight like crazy. There's screaming and screeching and everything else a filmy fight involves. But we make up as passionately too. (Blushes)

AK: I think she is the more insecure one as far as other girls go...

KK: But he is more insecure with himself. He thinks he's fat, dark, can't pronounce some words properly. It's quite silly actually.

You've said you will not make another intense film with her after Yellow Boots...

KK: I'm making him watch all the super girly chick flicks now. He loves Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice! imagine!

AK: I'm going to make an out and out romantic film now. The rest better watch out. (Laughs)

Are you friends with his daughter?

KK: When she's around, we gang up against him.

AK: She is more of a friend to Kalki than to me!

What is an ideal Anurag-Kalki day like?

KK: Phones switched off, somewhere far away probably walking and reading! If it were up to him, he'd go into a theater and watch all his favourite films. That would be a holiday for him.

AK: I promise that's not what we will do in Turkey!
