Actors who push their boundaries & the ones who don't

There was a time in the Hindi film industry when, if one kind of genre makes an entry, then you could see films made in that genre till the next genre comes about. And the reason used to be, "that's what the audience wants". Somewhere in the quest for a box office hit, an audience's sensibility was often compromised. But thankfully, the trend is changing, film makers are willing to push the boundaries and along with that, are actors who are even more willing to come out of their comfort zone.

Priyanka Chopra, recently signed a deal with the Universal Music Group & Desi Hitz to release her debut International music album. From modelling, to acting and now her foray into the music world just goes onto show that she is willing to push her boundaries. Another actor, who until recently was not really known for his versatility is, King Khan. The eternal romantic hero of recent times, who hardly played characters other than Rahul/Raj, came out of his comfort zone and played the disgraced hockey captain, Kabir Khan in Chak De India. His latest, to be released venture, Ra.One is also a testimony to his willingness to play different roles and characters.

But one actor who likes to stick to genres that work well for him is, King Khan's once friend now foe, Salman Khan. When playing "Prem" worked for him, for the longest time those were the only roles that we saw him in. Later, when playing a cop brought him box office success, he stuck to that. This is a clear case of not being too confident to experiment with other roles. His female contemporary, Preity Zinta is yet to do something different too - apart from accepting roles that just requires her to flash her dimples!

Comparatively (and thankfully) the current generation of actors (both male and female) are more open to taking up challenging roles. Even if it means its in their 1st film. This might be the right step and hopefully we will finally be watching more performances that are less cliched.

Agree with the article, Salman & Shahrukh play safe bank on their winning formula & don't push their boundaries...[Well Salman does outside of films]

I think Saif and Abhay push the envelope, regularly

they try out different roles, and seem pretty versatile

I think Priyanka is the all around, perfect example of pushing your boundaries. If you consider all the movies she has done...her career graph is very different in a good way.

And SRK and Salman haven't really been so experimental. But SRK has been stepping out of his comfort recently. Don, Chak De, RNBDJ, MNIK, and now Ra.One...it's all different. I wish i could say the same about Salman. But i think Bodyguard is sorta different, but then again...not really. SRK is more versatile than Salman in my opinion. But we can't forget Aamir...he is ahead at this then these two.

I think the 'new lot' or whatever are way ahead when it comes to this. For example, Shahid and Abhay. And actually, even Ranbir.

^ oh totally agree about Amir and Ranbir!

Pretty surprised with Ranbir considering he's relatively new, and he immediately got thrown into the "young heartthrob" category

his doing films like Rocket Singh, Wake Up Sid, and, to an extent, even his "item song" in Chillar Party, have proved that he's not too insecure about his boundaries.

Good for him =D

And Amir is da bosss. the less said, the better

And Abhay...this kid is just fantastic. Coming from the 'Deol' family and all...who would have thought to see him in a movie like Dev D?!...I admire him oh so much.

Eh.. I don't think SRK has only really tried to get out of his comfort zone in Swades and CDi. Everywhere else he was still Rahul.. in a slightly modified format. Even Salman has a Tere Naam where he tried to be different.
I agree with the comment that Ranbir and Saif are far more progressive when it comes to venturing something different. And Aamir too.. to a certain extent.
