Nitesh vows to stop RGV's next

Kunal M ShahKunal M Shah, Mumbai Mirror | May 29, 2011, 12.00am IST
Ram Gopal Varma, Nitesh Rane
Ram Gopal Varma's next venture, Department, seems to be a magnet for controversy, ever since its inception. Recently, the industry has been abuzz with speculation that the film has been based on politician, Narayan Rane, the current State Industries Minister.

Like all rumours, this has spread like wildfire, causing the former Shiv Sena member's son, Nitesh Rane, to voice his anger against the director. In fact, Nitesh has even threatened to put the brakes on the project, if the speculated subject of the film - his father, is depicted negatively.

The junior politician has sent a message to Ramu, through a mutual friend, demanding clarity surrounding the speculations about Amitabh Bachchan essaying his father. When contacted, Nitesh said, "Yes, I have heard the news about the character based on my father's life.

I first heard about this through a common friend of Ram Gopal Varma. I basically, want him to tell me what he is doing. No kind of negativity will be tolerated and the film will not be allowed to release.

I am waiting for him to call me and tell me what exactly he is planning. I believe he is not in town and so I will wait till he comes back to find out if he is portraying my father in the right way."

Nitesh added, "I absolutely don't care if he has put a lot of money in the film and how he has made the film. I am fine with being creative, but not at anyone's expense. Ramu told our common friend that he is not in town and he will come and meet me to explain everything and seek permission from us.

I am saying this from the very start of the film, so that he has ample time to clear his script. My father has many followers and they would not like him being portrayed in any negative manner. I don't want Ramu to make a film on my father and no similarity will be tolerated.

He can do better things to earn money. Earlier too, we had raised objection on Avdhoot Gupte's film Jhenda (flag) and this time too, if necessary we will do it."

While Nitesh has very firmly stated his standpoint on the matter, it seems that the only one left in the dark about these speculations is the director himself. When contacted, Varma said, "I have no idea who Nitesh Rane is and Bachchan is playing a completely fictional character of a gangster turned politician. The film is not based on any real life character."
