In his recent interview Abhi had said "When my film is a hit it is never mins but the flop is always mine. Like Dostana is my hit but people say it is John's hit, Paa is big B's hit......as if I just don't do anything inthe movie"....
I felt for him. Becasue it is correct. If we see now everyone is praising Pratiek and Rana but no one is saying anything about Abhi's acting. Few has said he is very good. But very few. People like to ignore Abhi..don't know but this is the truth.
I really want this movie to be a HIT even though the credit is going to go to Rana.😉

Dum Maaro Dum

[ 0 ]

Director: Rohan Sippy
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Pratik Babbar and Rana Daggubatti
Release Date: 2011-04-22 00:00:00
Quick Take: Movie mein hai dum

The opening montage of Dum Maro Dum shows you a Goa that you wouldn't recognise. It's sharp and edgy and sets the tone for the film. If you say a film doesn't fall far from the title then you wouldn't be wrong in guessing that Dum Maaro Dum definitely has a lot to do with drugs. Drugs mean power. Drugs also mean the wrong use of power. And it's crucial in whose hands that power lies. Goa meri jaan, jannat ki shaan says the opening voice over. Only, this heaven's infested with the scums of the earth who peddle drugs and traffic them.

Inspector Kamath wants to clean up this sewer. Only it's not so easy. There are wolves in sheep's clothing and the system is so deeply infected that only unorthodox methods will help.

So Lori (Pratik Babbar) is arrested for being a carrier. The poor boy was only trying to fund his scholarship abroad so he could untie with the love of his life but a mix of sex, alcohol and bad judgment leads him to a bad decision. Joki (Rana Daggubatti), a singer, vouches for his innocence but has no way of proving it. Inspector Kamath won't believe him either. And then there is the menacing drug lord Lorsa Biscuta who loves to play good Samaritan in public. And troubled damsel always in distress Zoe (Bipasha Basu) has to grapple with too many inner demons not to mention an outer one in the form of Lorsa.

DMD has a taut narrative that doesn't flail till post interval. It keeps you engrossed through an imaginative blend of some stupendous background music, animated cinematography and simple effective storytelling. The characters are introduced with clarity and soon you get a very clear picture of what's going with whom. DMD also has strong relationship threads running through it and each character does what he does because he has an intensely personal motive. Plus there is enough suspense and action to keep you hooked.

Rohan Sippy has given sunny Goa a sepia toned grainy texture and you seriously begin to wonder if this is the same place you go to, to leave the world beyond.

As for the performances Abhishek does an earnest and impressive job. Rana Dagubatti sure has an impressive screen presence but we must wait to find out if that dead pan expression is restricted only to this film. Here it works completely in his favour. Pratik looks dazed and confused and again this is totally what the role demands of him. Yet the boy has such an endearing quality about him and you don't want to take your eyes off him when he is on screen. Bipasha looks suitably traumatised.

As far as gritty thrillers go DMD scores high. Give it a shot. If you can manage to not wince through that horrible remix where the only saving grace is a hot Deepika Padukone. There's enough dum here to give you a movie high.

Sukanya Venkatraghavan 4/5 stars

Gripping thriller

Story: ACP Vishnu Kamath (Abhishek Bachchan) had hit rock bottom in his career and his personal life, when he suddenly gets a second chance at redemption. He is given the prestigious, yet dangerous mission of cleaning up Goa of its all-pervasive illegal drug mafia. Pitted against the powerful drug lord Lorsa Biscuta (Aditya Pancholi), a corrupt police department and a host of innocents trapped in the trade -- Bipasha and Prateik Babbar -- will the diehard cop succeed in this operation? He does find welcome help from the local DJ, Joki (Rana Daggubati) who wants to extricate the innocents, specially his girlfriend Zoey (Bipasha Basu) from the dragnet.

Movie Review: There's something about Abhishek Bachchan and his cop act. It always works, unlike most of his other screen avatars. Till date, Dhoom remains one of his most memorable performances, where his savoir faire as the sassy policeman stood up commendably to the charisma of the bad guys, John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan. Dum Maaro Dum reiterates the fact that Abhishek seems to be a natural charmer when it comes to slipping into the shoes of a quintessential somewhat crooked-somewhat straight cop. His body language, his dialogue rendition, his lazy zeal and laidback attitude, adds a cutting edge to the character of ACP Vishnu Kamath, Goa's desi Bruce Willis (Diehard) who plays the game according to his own rules.

And Abhishek isn't alone in crafting a host of riveting characters who lend a special cadence to the film. There is Prateik Babbar and Anaitha Nair's teen love story that goes awry, once Prateik gets embroiled in illegal activities. There is Bipasha Basu and Rana Daggubati's bindaas beach romance that lights up the screen intermittently. There is Mafioso Aditya Pancholi and his mean guy act which flashes fire and brimstone. And there is the cop camaraderie between Abhishek and his team that adds substance to the proceedings. All the characters are credible and immensely watchable.

Further more, there is the stylization of the film and its dramatic narration that makes it a compelling watch. The film sl*gs in places and needs tightening, but the lull is followed by a tangy twist in the tale, which makes up for the occasional yawn. Shridhar Raghavan writes a thrilling cops and robbers tale which has some quirky banter scripted by Purva Naresh. Add to this Goa captured in glowing colours by cinematographer Amit Roy and a peppy music score by Pritam, and director Rohan Sippy gives you a film that keeps the popcorn crackling, till the very end. So much so, you don't actually mind the 'potty' lyrics, as Deepika Padukone adds a dusky sheen to them with the Deepika shake. Of course, there's Vidya Balan too, with her winning smiles, in a brief cameo, proving once again that she's the most in-sync co-star for Abhishek Bachchan. Remember Paa?

This one's complete paisa vasool fare.

A word about:

Performances: Abhishek's a cool cop, Rana Daggubati makes a dashing debut, Prateik Babbar's credible, Bipasha Basu still smoulders and Aditya Pancholi is an interesting bad guy.

Direction: Rohan Sippy tells a zippy story, packaging it with the right twists and turns.

Story: Sriram Raghavan is on familiar ground, with flair.

Dialogues: Purva Naresh scripts interesting conversations amongst the sundry characters.

Cinematography: Amit Roy captures Goa with its grandeur and grime.

Music: Midival Punditz pitches in an eclectic background score and Pritam Singh creates some peppy numbers.

Choreography: Deepika Padukone's title track simmers, despite the questionable lyrics.

(Divya Solgama -Divs wrote on Apr 21 2011 10:06PM)

'Goa' has been generally featured as tourist destination or holiday retreat in our Hindi movies. Besides these romantic or feel good films, it has been featured over its patriotic angle too in films like Saat Hindustani, Pukar, Trikaal and few more. But then there are few films where 'Goa' has been featured as the land of Dope, Naseerudin Shah's Jalwa and few more are perfect examples of this dark side of Goa. Decades later Rohan Sippy dares to reveal the reality of Goa's drug mafia and its operation but in commercial movie style. So let's find out? Will this movie match the director's last venture 'Bluff master' or the master will vanish leaving behind the bluff for its audience.

"Dum Maaro Dum" is story based on the Drug mafia operations in Goa. Innocent youngsters like Lorry {Prateik Babbar} get caught in the drug net. In comes ACP Vishnu Kamath {Abhishek Bachchan} who plans to wipe out the whole Drug Mafia from the map of Goa. He is supported by his team {Govind Namdeo} and a young musician Joki {Rana Daggubati}. All the leads point out to one name – Michael Barossa, and to trace Michael Barossa Kamath has to get hold of Lorsa Biscuta {Aditya Pancholi} and his people. How does ACP Kamath reach Michael Barossa is all the film about.

Story is interesting and has good grip in its narration. The screenplay works as a thriller, especially in the first half where the movie runs with the total pace and has loads of thrilling and interesting moments. But as the second half starts the thriller slows down and retains its grip near the climax, which sadly is predictable. Still the movie has some good scenes to watch out {Especially in the first half} – The whole Prateik story, Abhishek and Minister talks, Abhishek Nabbing Drug guys, Abhishek torturing Pedro, Abhishek Phone a Friend, Abhishek Nabbing Prateik, Bipasha learning Newton's 4th law, Rana-Bipasha story, Abhishek and Aditya in the party, Abhishek at the night market, Abhishek Singing 'Khai Ke Paan', The whole Rave Party in the anti climax and few more. On the flip side the second half narration is slow and total contrast to the first half of the film, the whole Bipasha-Rana chapter loses its charm after the basic intro of their relationship, Last but not the least the whole predicted climax. But despite of knowing the predictable climax, there are still some good thrilling elements in the climax blended with some good twist and turns. Some minor amount of Editing is required in the second half to make this thriller movie more interesting and enjoyable.

Camera work is of top notch, the whole capturing of Goa spirit in good and bad ways is done brilliantly. The movie gives the feel of international film, with its good camera work and fantastic locations {The beaches, The Goan Culture, Rave Parties, Etc}.

Music by Pritam is fine, but when it comes in comparison with Rohan Sippy's last work 'Bluff master', its fails. Still 'Te Amo', 'Raat' and 'Thai Thai' appeals to you as it has some good visual moments along with the audio track. 'Bechainiya' could have been avoided. 'Dum Maaro Dum' Remix is nowhere to match the craze and enigma of the original R.D.Burman composition. Neither do Deepika has the same sex appeal and grace which Zeenat Aman had, but still there is something interesting and attractive about Deepika in this song which makes you watch it, without complaining. Background music is good and goes well with the film.

Rohan Sippy's last work 'Bluff master' was an interesting thriller with some good suspense element in it. The twist and turns in the end went well with the film. In between the both half's he had lost the track out there too. Same happens here in 'Dum Maaro Dum' but if compared with the earlier flick the climax of this one is not at par. Still a good attempt by Rohan Sippy and he succeeds on the first half, thrilling moments, technical aspects and some decent performances. He has attempted something different and yes the work speaks.

Abhishek Bachchan has been hammered by the critics for his last few films getting flop. But out here if the history repeats itself, he won't be blamed for sure. He does his part superbly and as a Narcotics cop he shines with his style and dialog delivery. His whole screen appearance is different than out usual masala commercial film cops. Rana Daggubati gives an impressive appearance in this film. He is confident and does his part with total justification. Would like to watch more from this guy. Prateik is nice in the small role. Bipasha Basu looks good, but her role is not that great. Aditya Pancholi is same old as we had seen him a decade back. Same goes for Govind Namdeo and Anaitha Nair.

So bol meri 'Filmi Khopdi' is film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai, achcha khaasa dum hai boss especially in the first half. Sadly the second half looses the charm set by the initial part of the film. But still overall a good thriller with some nice twist and turns. The movie has its potential to hold you throughout the film {Thanks to Shridhar Raghavan}. Also the performance by the main two heroes makes you take sniff through this film and enjoy.

DUM MAARO DUM MOVIE REVIEW
By Githa Vanan - BollySpice.com

The stakes are high and lined up when it comes to Dum Maaro Dum. For Abhishek Bachchan, he needs to come back to form after Game andKhelein Hum Jee Jaan Se failed to muster up the marks. Rohan Sippy returns to wield the megaphone after 5 years. Besides the success duo, Bipasha Basu, Rana Daggubati and Prateik Babbar join them in a movie that has all the makings of a hard-hitting suspense thriller that's been hyped since the initial promos were released. Does it live up to the expectations? Read on to find out.

Goa: A beautiful paradise on earth for so many. But every paradise has its demons that lurk in the night. For Goa, the snake with the forbidden fruit is drugs and Goa is swamped with them. It's the black stain on a white cloud and it's ACP Vishnu's (Abhishek Bachchan) job to get rid of it. But the battle against drugs is not his alone. There is Lorry (Prateik) who takes a wrong turn out of desperation for money. His story intertwines with Joki (Rana Daggubati) who bares scars from his lost love Zoey (Bipasha Basu) and who tries to help Lorry get out of the trap he's fallen into. However, before they can blink, the two get caught into the sickening web that Kamath is trying to clean. Kamath begins working with Joki and Lorry and turns his investigation to public figure Lorsa Biscuita aka the Biscuit [Aditya Pancholi]. But it is not only Biscuit that is at the heart of the evil, it is the shadow that hides in the background. The Drug Kingpin that has had the Goan police fooled for so long. The time has come for Kamath to get rid of this shadow named Michael Barbossa and with help from Lorry and Joki,Dum Maaro Dum is about the three men's battle with the snakes in the society but also the demons hidden within.

First of all, this film bears no resemblance to the past successes and failures of Rohan Sippy so it is best that the past be left where it is, in the past. This film marks his shift in genre to a thriller that has enough suspense to hold the audience's attention and entertain. But let's step back a bit and start with our performers. He may have hit damp squibs in the recent past but Abhishek Bachchan works ACP Vishnu Kamath to the full capacity while looking amazing. Whether it's anger, frustration or the confidence of a street-smart cop, he scores and is convincing to say the least. Right by his side is Rana Daggubati. The actor acts his part well and his potential that shined through in his first film Leader is evident again in his Hindi debut. He is fresh yet restrained while standing his ground next to A-list actors. This film is yet another example of the acting talents of Prateik Babbar. Only three films down, he is proving to be versatile with his role selection just like co-star Rana, and throughout the film there is never a moment that you feel he doesn't fit the character with his emotions and body language matching perfectly. Bipasha Basu plays an ambitious Zoe that is like a modern version of her role in Aakrosh as a "traumatized victim" character. However, the actress does make her presence felt in a male dominated cast and her chemistry with Rana is sweet and simple. Aditya Pancholi has an impressive track record somehow the actor doesn't hit the mark as needed. Where he scores in his outbursts, the subtle slyness and evil persona that is necessary for the antagonist isn't present all the time in his performance. Govind Namdeo hams on occasion and gets to the point of irritating in the second portion. Anaitha Nair is cute but barely there while the actor that plays Ricky is effective as is Vidya Balan.

Rohan Sippy has taken his time to get back into the director seat but the wait has proved beneficial. The director brings to life Sridhar Raghavan's story about three men of varying backgrounds and weaves them together in an easily understood yet intriguing narrative. If there is one aspect that stands out in DMD, its the cinematography by Amit Roy. Not a stone out of place like authenticity yet stylishly sexy, Amit brings the beauty of Goa onto celluloid that has rarely been seen before. From the intoxicating surroundings of a rave to the town parades, his work speaks for itself. Background score by Midival Punditz is top notch while Purva Naresh's dialogue is sharp at times.

However, DMD isn't a straight clean shot, the scenes in the second half lack the necessary depth needed, making them more like speed breakers to a fast pacing narrative. Editing by Aarif Shaikh should have reduced the intermittent lag that is present in the second half, including in the sequence leading up to the climax, but instead it falters and considering the crispness of the first half is so fresh, the audience tends to get bored and restless.

Yet, is this enough to call it a bad film or even a badly made good film? With so much hype and gloss surrounding the film, does Dum Maaro Dum deliver? No and Yes. With awesome performances, great visuals, a thought out story and easy to understand screenplay, Dum Maaro Dum isn't a masterpiece but it has merit. And Abhishek Bachchan.
