Why do we end up comparing everything to west.. Sorry but i wouldn't like to asume that indian women don't get to decide.. which movie their family is going to watch... I will say this again.. family oriented movies work the best in bollywood.. and how can we asume that if families are watching comedies then its only men who are forcibly dragging their wives to watch those movies.. and wives are forced.. and they sulk in a corner and HAVE TO watch those movies..
And TRUST ME .. Desi men don't like romantic movies like DDLJ .. or KKHH.. why desi men.. men just hate chick flicks like these... but they are forced to watch them.. and yes i will give you this that men do like watching comedies... but they don't like watching Overtly romantic movies.. the KJO and YRF kind... Even movies like Band baaja barat... you wouldn't see many men going head over heels.. falling for those kinda movies.. Women usually drag their hubbies and bfs to such movies.. and guys often do complain as to why they have to put up with this crap...
And the diff between salaries exist even in HOLLYWOOD.. and even some of the most progressive countries still don't have women in popular sports..
I'm only comparing it with the west because that's what I'm familiar and have knowledge on. This isn't an issue of Indian women but women in general.
When resources are limited, it is usually the women who eat last. This is the case in many african countries presently. I don't see it as submissive but more of a sacrifcing nature.
Similarly, there might be a lot of middle-class people in Indian but money is a limiting factor. When women have money they tend to spend it on their families whereas men would spend it out on themselves. It's just the difference in mentaly between two sexes. Also women have kids to tend to, and in
general are more domestical than man. When there's extra money, men gets first dib.
Let's compare Hollywood films with Bollywood. Sex in the City, a movie about middle-aged women was a hit, has BW ever come up with such concepts (if they have it was most likely a flop) Twilight- even though I absolutely hated the movie- catered to young girls and was a mega-blockbuster.
I cannot just to be politically correct say that women as an audience carry the same weight as men in India. The movies itself speak against that. Though there are a few exceptions.
