Cricketers and gentlemen

Posted On Wednesday, April 06, 2011 at 03:34:03 AM

Cricket is the sport of Bollywood. Dalliances between actors and players have long provided grist to a prurient press.

And in this season of cricket madness we thought it appropriate to dig out this gem.

The late Shyam Aurangabadkar shot this picture at a benefit match soon after the end of the Indo-China war of 1962.

Two of Mumbai's biggest film icons, Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar pose here before the start of the match.

From their formal footwear you know that their stint on the pitch is not going to be a long one.

Kapoor's mischievous grin and Kumar's more restrained smile are indicative of the widely contrasting personalities of the two and their sometimes uneasy equation.
@bold : reminds me of aamir and SRK 😊

Dilip Kumar - Raj Kapoor Rivalry

Two of the tallest personalities, in the history of Indian cinema, Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, shared a healthy rivalry over films they made. Both started their career in mid - 1940's. In a matter of a decade, it became clear they would be stars for a long time to come.

Pretty soon they were in tough competition, with each other. There movies often released in the same year, and most open would end up being the top two films of the year. It must be noted, here at that time there was a strong communal tension in the country. So eventually division of fans became stronger, to some fans they seemed to be represent both communities.

At the height of this debate, came Mehboob Khan's Andaz (1949), with both actors starring in a love triangle plot with Nargis playing the common love interest. Much as fans wanted, both stars had on screen confrontations in the film. The competition resulted superb performances from both the actors.

In one of the scenes in Andaz, RK's character slaps DK's character. For that shot, RK landed an actual heavy slap on DK's face. So much so it startled the crew who were present during shooting. The chemistry of both rocked the film, and Andaz became Super Hit.

Unlike today, when rivalry between actors gets down to extent of naming dogs after the other, back then things were cordial. They both never got into public spat, they would often meet at parties award functions and would be amicable.

This competition continued for decades. 1960 saw the release of 'Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai' on theme of reformation amongst dacoits. It was very well received. Dilip Kumar followed it up with 'Ganga Jamuna' in 1961, which became a bigger hit and was critically more acclaimed than JDMGBH.

Decades of competition turned to admiration when both of them got elderly. It is said that after watching Dilip Sahab's 'Shakti', Raj Kapoor called up and said, "Today I saw your film Shakti and now one thing is clear to me, that there is one and only one actor like Dilip Kumar."

As of today both have a lasting impression on Indian Cinema, Raj Kapoor as the Showman and Dilip Kumar for his excellent acting

But as a film buff there rivalry resulted in both trying to do better work and in process made excellent films.

Vyjanthimala talks about the rivalry:
I was oblivious to what the undercurrents between Dilip saab and RK were, but I was told it all got down to dates and led to this battle of wits between the two titans. If I had to stay back late on the sets of Sangam, I would reach late for Leader, though they never started on time. It was a long wait. It was more of professional rivalry and I was caught in the crossfire, though I was giving equal dates to both the films. It was a big hero here and a big hero there. It was more of an ego tussle. Filmalaya's Leader was the trade union stuff, carrying a very strong anti-communal message. And that particular number, Apni azadi ko hum hargiz mita sakte nahin…hit it off. All that talk of my being pulled out of the 'Dilip Kumar camp' was news to me. I was blissfully unaware of all these machinations till it got blown up as a scandal. I was told the angle of RK-Vyjayanti team was gaining more importance and that the Dilip-Vyjayanti team was breaking up. Since people's imagination was running riot, I was being unnecessarily hauled up. I was not privy to any kind of manipulation. I was merely an artiste, who would work and cooperate with any director. But I was certainly heading for some more strange things happening in my cine career. Right after Leader, I had signed for Ram Aur Shyam with Dilip saab. It was being filmed in Madras. I had done shooting for about eight days and on the last day of that schedule I went all dressed to the sets, but sensed something was amiss. There was a certain unfriendliness in the air. As I wrapped up for the day to leave, the production assistant said that he wanted the forthcoming dates in writing. I told him that was not possible and as soon as I got back to Bombay, I would find out from my manager and let him know. He said, "No, you'll have to sign this paper." I found it very strange and got on to the flight without signing anything. Even going by pure logic, I was quite justified in doing that.

It so happened that Sri Venus Krishnamurthy (with whom I had done Nazrana and Suraj), who was also a great family friend and guide, he too was on the same flight. I confided in him about what had transpired on the sets. He was surprised that I was not aware of the fact that I was being replaced. "Don't you know, don't you know what has happened? Waheeda Rehman has taken over your role." I was flabbergasted and could not make head or tail of what this conspiracy was all about. How was I to know that something was going on there? Now it was evident that they had sort of made up their mind regarding the change of guard in the film. They were looking for some lame excuse to pin me down, and then ease me out. No wonder, the atmosphere on the sets was so strange.
