also...its wrong to get mixed up between "a trade analyst" and a "critic"...a trade analyst reviews the fate of the film at the box office, and a critic reviews the film as one person's perspective...so when reviews say "this film will do well in X,Y,Z circuits or this film is not for the masses" its not really a review, its a trade report...

then what is Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama considered? A mix of both? 😲

FYI I hardly go to the theaters to watch a movie. Its mad expensive. I either watch it online or on DVD. I've only watched a select few movies in theaters.

yes but a film becums a hit or flop when majority of the ppl share the same or similar opinions abt the film...not everyone will love or hate a film...there are ppl who hated a critically acclaimed BLACK......and there are ppl who loved the universally trashed tashan...but since the majority thought black was good and tashan was bad..they ended up with their respective fates at the box office...since critics belong to a segment of audience albeit small, their reviews can often be an accurate judgement of how the general audience would respond to a muvie...of course there are cases when they trash a heyy babyy and it goes on to be a blockbuster..but as masand put it on twitter:

The greatest service a critic can be of, is to encourage u to develop an appetite for great films. Ones that are more than just time-pass!

We as an audience are easily satisfied with time-pass muvies or "ok type" muvies...we dunt require each film to be a masterpiece..as long as its mildly entertaining.....hence they end up doing well...but as critics, its their job not to encourage mediocre work, so obviously..them trashing such films is justified.

I think what CPR was trying to say is that different people have different opinion on what constitutes "great" film. Even different critics have different opinions. Like you mentioned, even Black was trashed by some (very few, as it is difficult to find critics in BW who dislikes films dealing with different/unconventional subject) critics.

i guess...but in a way...the critics are responsible for pointing the audience in the right direction....we wouldnt even know of a phas gaya obama, or a Love sex dhoka or an A wednesday if it were not for good reviews from critics.....of course if someones really keen to watch a muvie...then they will watch it irrespective of the reviews...but the general audience wants to spend their precious money and time on something decent and hence, go by the reviews of critics.....they may or may not go to a muvie trashed by the critics...but they will definately go to a movie which is unanimously praised by the critics...bad reviews might not effect the muvie much...but...good reviews are a huge crowd puller.

Yes its true that critics make us aware of films that we wouldn't have heard of otherwise like the movies you mentioned, BUT again an individual can make their own judgment on the films. For me I don't think I'd want to see those movies you mentioned cause they aren't very appealing to me and neither do they have a star cast I'm interested in. I mean again I guess its up to the individual on whether they want to go by what the critics say or judge it on their own basis. That's not for me or you to say. Everyone is different in that regard.

i guess CPR...u share a diff POV to me....the star cast is probably the last thing i check b4 going into the muvie...i mostly go by word of mouth and reviews...as long as they act well, i dunt really care if the muvie stars shahrukh khan or a rank newcomer...
