Movie Review: Lafangey Parindey

Comments Comments [ 0 ] By Varsha B. | 20 August 2010 | 2:10pm

Expectations are soaring high when the Yash Raj banner brings a film on the silver screen as this reputed banner has a history of successes in its kitty. Lafangey Parindey through its promos has generated quite some buzz as the Dilwale Dhulaniya Le Jayenge to Hum Aapke Hain Kaun dialogue has become quite famous amognst Bollywood buffs. But does the film live up to the high expectations anticipated by a Yash Raj film? Can the newly made pair Neil and Deepika win the hearts of audiences as an onscreen couple?

This is a story set in a small 'vadi' or colony with very rustic language taking us into the lives of Pinky (Deepika Padukone) and Nandu (Neil Nitin Mukesh). Pinky is a girl full of dreams who wants to get out of the locality she has been born and brought in through her amazing talent in dance. Dancing on skates, Pinky hopes to win her passport out of her small colony through this passion of dance that keeps her going. Nandu is a one-shot boxer in a gang under Usman bhai and he happens to live in the same colony as Pinky. Life changes for both the central characters when Nandu while driving accidentally runs over Pinky. The world thinks that Anna, the criminal accompanying Nandu that night was the cause of the accident, but no one is aware of the fact that Nandu is the one responsible for the accident.

Pinky after the accident has not only lost her vision but also her dreams. Nandu through a common acquaintance befriends Pinky in order to make up for his wrongdoing. Soon Nandu starts teaching Pinky how to see again by giving her lessons about the other senses such as hearing, touching, smelling, etc. The two start falling in love with eachother as Pinky works towards her dream of participating and winning a reality show called "India's Got Talent". Pinky is unaware that Nandu was the man behind her accident and she starts trusting Nandu so much that she chooses him as her partner for the show. Nandu learns skating and dancing for his ladylove but with the guilt that he is the one behind her blind eyes today. The story slowly unfolds as Pinky finds out about the true culprit behind her accident in the midst of the finals for the show.

Lafangey Parindey entertains with an 'expected' Bollywood story line. There aren't many twists and turns in the film and the screen unfolds just the way any Bollywood moviegoer would guess. The climax with Nandu and Pinky's final performance for the finale is somewhat unrealistic as though the couple does a good job, it just does not seem to be a performance that would be the winner of a reality show. Their previous performance in the selection process was also flawed as Nandu falls so one is forced to wonder how they even got selected. But this is a Bollywood film and thus the hero and heroine have to be selected for the film to move forward.

While the story line is average, the true ace in Yash Raj's Lafangey Parindey is the excellent dialogue writing. The dialogues are strong and touch one's heart. From the comic to the emotional, the writing is par excellence and gives life to the characters. The tapori language manages to make the audiences smile as well as feel the pain of the central characters. Songs are situational and blend well with the film, especially the title track 'Lafangey Parindey'.

From Rani Mukherjee to Kajol, many actresses have enacted the role of a blind character on screen and thus Deepika has a tough job when it comes to winning the hearts of audiences with the character of Pinky. And Deepika is extremely successful in accomplishing this task as she connects with the audience and naturally flows into the character of Pinky. Her realistic portrayal of the character and strong command on her dialogues containing rustic language, bring life to the character. By far, Lafangey Parindey is Deepika's best work thus far.

Neil, on the other hand, is good but he could have been better. At times, Neil feels expressionless and one wishes he would emoted more so that his character could connect with the audiences better. Deepika surely overshadows Neil but together these two come across as a good pair in the film.

Overall, Lafangey Parindey is not a perfect film but it does entertain. Metro audiences and college going students are sure to catch this film in theatres while the film may or may not work in the international markets. Overall Lafangey Parindey is a decent entertainer that has a good amount of laughs, emotions, and very well written dialogues!

Im not going to rely on the tweets, most fans will blindly praise these actors to no end and will not be objective. For me the reviews that count are Anupama Chopra, Rajeev Masand and Passionforcinema.

Quick Review: Lafangey Parindey showcases Mumbai's spirit
Published: Friday, Aug 20, 2010, 14:20 IST
By Blessy Chettiar | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

Lafangey Parindey
Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Deepika Padukone
Director: Pradeep Sarkar
Rating: ***

Lafangey Parindey has a clichd storyline, but biker/boxer Nandu (Neil) and Pinky Palkar (Padukone) pull off their roles with the spirit of true Mumbaikars.

The film is set in a Mumbai wadi and residents Pinky and Nandu take us through a journey of will power and determination set against the backdrop of a talent contest (which is Pinky's "passport" to the outside world) and an event that could change their lives forever.

Neil and Padukone do a decent job as the tough guy and blind girl, respectively, with a tapori gang of friends who share the limelight with themr. Mumbaikars will relate to the locations and Bambaiyya Hindi.

Watch this one for the never-say-die spirit of humans with a tinge of entertainment.

Cast: Deepika Padukone, Neil Nitin Mukesh
Director: Pradeep Sarkar

She, a wannabe figure skater, cannot see. He, a bare-knuckles street-fighter, doesn't need to. But both Pinky Palkar and Nandan Kamtekar have their sights firmly set on a better life, a life beyond the mean backstreets of Mumbai. The path out of this morass is, needless to say, littered with countless snares.

This is just the kind of narrative raw material that is inherently primed to yield loads of drama, some dirty dancing and a bit of daredevilry. But does it?

As a love story of a somewhat different timbre, Pradeep Sarkar's third directorial vehicle is youthful, nimble and sure-footed, a far cry from his previous outing, the rather stodgy Laaga Chunari Mein Daag.

For the most part, Lafangey Parindey trundles along at a fair clip, although it never turns into anything more than a predictable ride. On the way, there is much bump and grind, and flying fists and bloodied noses too. But behind it all is a wholesome human tale that celebrates the doggedness of those that are down and but not out.

Not everything that Lafangey Parindey delivers is likely to strike the audience as convincing, but on the whole the impact of this effervescent entertainer is pretty rounded, which, given the many recent misfires from the Yash Raj Films (YRF) cannon (Tashan, Pyaar Impossible, Dil Bole Hadippa, Badmaash Company), is saying a lot.

In Lafangey Parindey, the Bollywood tapori makes a clean break from his usual moorings. Well, his lingo still reeks of the street, his wadi buddies answer to names like Chuddi, Gulkand and Diesel and, like all good aamchi Mumbai mulgas, they have a customary go at the dahi handi.

But this is a YRF film, so the gang here isn't of the grubby, crude, foul-mouthed variety. These boys mimic their upper-class counterparts: the Barista crowd of numerous Bollywood flicks.

Even the supposed grit and grime of a Mumbai bustee assumes a soft halogen glow in Lafangey Parindey. The cluttered neighbourhood wears a well-scrubbed look and the rough and tumble of life here – the cops and the underworld are never far away – is lent a romanticised halo.

But the film's edgy, go-getting soundtrack (music: R Anandh, lyrics: Swanand Kirkire) is a marked departure. Aided by the informal ways in which the songs are filmed and edited, the music captures the sprightly spirit of the film to perfection. Kirkire's Gulzaresque Mann lafanga bada/Apne mann ki kare and the grungy rhythms of the peppy Dhatad tatad number are truly striking.

One Shot Nandu (Neil Nitin Mukesh) – the name is derived from his uncanny ability to lay his opponent low with one blow – talks tough, acts rough and is blessed with exceptional wiles. He fights blindfolded every Friday for satta king Usman Ali (Piyush Mishra, as exceptional as ever). He always wins.

Pinky (Deepika Padukone), a shopping mall employee, dreams of winning Rs 50 lakh from India's Got Talent, but an accident throws her off track. She loses her eyesight, job and confidence. Egged on by Nandu, she learns to refocus herself on her goal. She uses all her senses – touch, smell, sound and heart – to offset the absence of sight.

Nandu and Pinky form an unlikely pair, and as fate and life-altering twists throw them into the same ring, they learn to wriggle their way out of the mess.

The story of two underdogs from the wrong side of the urban divide fighting tooth and nail for their place in the sun may not be strikingly original. It might not be particularly rousing either. But Lafangey Parindey has enough energy going to hold the interest of the audience. Particularly stunning are the figure skating sequences. Full marks to the choreographer and the lead pair.

Deepika Padukone has several hits behind her. Neil Nitin Mukesh is still looking for the first real blockbuster of his career although he has figured in films like Johnny Gaddar, New York and Jail. Neither of the two is a finished article yet but they are getting there. Lafangey Parindey offers a canvas that allows them to use just the right colours and moods. The duo does a fine job.

Lafangey Parindey soars just high enough to stand a fair chance of garnering mass applause.

The publicity machinery had, in the days leading up to the release, let on that the film's fight sequences and stunts were performed by the lead actors themselves, without the aid of body doubles. Wow! But why would young, promising actors who have their lives and careers ahead of them risk their limbs for a film like this?

What are a few bruises on the body if a box office hit is the reward? Lafangey Parindey has the makings of one.

Review of
Lafangey Parindey (2010 - Hindi)

Lafangey Parindey movie rating: 3 out of 5 3 votes

Lafangey Parindey rating: 5 out of 10(Divya Solgama -Divs wrote on Aug 20 2010 1:21PM)

Pradeep Sarkar started his career in his early 50's with a superb film Parinita. He proved that when passion of film making comes, age does not matter. But then something happened and he shifted his base from Vidhu Vinod Chopra's camp to Yash Raj camp and made Laaga Chunri Mein Daag. Well this daag did stain Pradeep's Filmography, but thanks to his first film he got another chance in the banner to make a youth based love story "Lafangey Parindey". But can a director whose school of film making is total different than today's film makers make a love story for today's youth? Well if a person feels young from his heart he can, or else tai tai phiss. Let's find out where does this flight of the love birds end?

"Lafangey Parindey" is a story based in cramp streets of Mumbai. One Shot 'Nandu' {Neil Nitin Mukesh} is a street fighter who makes his living by fighting with blindfold and attacks his opponent on his hearing capability. He along with his bunch of friends keeps loitering in their area. One day the local goon leader Usmaan bhai {Piyush Mishra} assigns a job to Nandu, where he goofs up and ends up with an accident. {Spoilers Alert} later he comes to know that he accidently had hit Pinky {Deepika}, who also stays in his area and her aim is to win a talent show based on her Skating Dance. Pinky loses her eye sight and Nandu feels guilty thus he decides to help her. He and his friends train Pinky to get her confidence and sound judgment. In this process Nandu starts developing soft corner for Pinky, but the guilt is always chasing him. What happens next is the entire movie about.

We have seen loads of movies based in such concept, Dev Anand's Bambai Ka Babu or Gulzar's Kinara comes first in mind when you start watching the film. What's different out here is the whole treatment and the Skating Dance has been added to camouflage the old wine. Pradeep did the same in his last film which was also highly inspired by Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz's Aaina, but revamped it in Yash Raj Style. This time he took it to those streets of Mumbai, which are hardly to be found in Mumbai of 2010. The whole tapori angle, with all this language looked quite tacky keeping in mind the way Mumbai has evolved to the mall culture. Screenplay is nothing great, the movie picks up only after the accident takes place and the whole training process starts. The training process is the best part of the film, it entertains you as well as the fresh pair looks nice in those scenes. But then the moment it's out of the training, etc the movies slows down and struggles to drag to its next scene. Editing needed to be sharper in this two hour long film. Camera work is good and the whole Street Fights, Skating Dance, Competitions, etc have been captured very well.

Music by R. Anandh is nice but does not live to Yash Raj's style, btw I guess none of its last few films did match to it in recent times. Anyway Nain Parindey, Pakad Pakad and Mann Lafanga go very well with the flow of the film and manage to keep your interest on in the film.

Pradeep Sarkar tries his level best to make the film youthful, he would had succeeded if the film would had been made few years back. But now making a film with a concept which has been used in so many Hindi films makes it look too tacky. He is a talented director and there is no second opinion about it, but he should select films as per his style, and not change himself to match up with today's style. Even in a two hours film, there are parts where film drags and that are a big negative point. But on positive side as said earlier the falling in love part, training, concert etc are done in good manner and thus the film has something more to offer than just the banner name.

Neil Nitin Mukesh tries very hard to do a decent job and the efforts does show on screen, but his whole fair looks and foreigner style goes totally contrast over his tapori character in the film. He looked lost in some scenes, but was superb in action scenes and the training part. Deepika was perfect for her character, he accent added more charm to the mumbaiya girl. She will keep you gasped with her dance and skating. Piyush Mishra, Namit Das, Manish and others are good support but nothing new to offer. Kay Kay Menon cameo was wasted.

So bol meri "Filmi Khopdi" is film mein kitna hai dum?

Dum hain, theek thaak dum hai lekin kutch khaas nahi. The film overall is not a bad watch, but not a great watch either. You can catch it on your idiot box in sometime and might be a good watch out there, as it has the talent show and all those stuffs to offer. In short this flight of the fresh parindey manages to glide a madhyam udaan, which is slight better than a crash landing.

Lafangey Parindey Movie Review : Bheje Mein Shot

Magik | Review | August 20, 2010 at 1:57 pm Print

Janmon ke saathi...

Overheard a 'One Shot' Review:
"Dekhne mein cute hai re, chhapri log ko acting karne nai aata hai"

Rating: 2 Stars. Strictly for the Lyrics & Music. One for 'Dhatar Dhatar' & another for 'Mann Lafanga'

May be I would have been better off & a happier flake, had I written just a music review for Pradeep Sar's Lafangey Parindey. Why did I watch the movie? Even after blah blah blah… In Indori colloqial talk it's called "gareebi mein aata geela karna" roughly translated as "while you should be saving money for a rainy day, you go & see Blue". A classic case of ho gaya kalyan!

Deepika is NOT blind in the film.

Oops… that was a spoiler.

No wait, I was just kidding. Bwahahahahaha

I happened to meet veteran PFC author Zoorya yesterday & had the fortune of spending time with him. Somewhere during our conversation, He said "I only wish Deepika isn't REALLY blind in the film." We laughed over it and let it go as we had other things to mull over. Like Sriram Raghavan Sir's "8 Collumn Affair" [Do watch it!]

Lafangey Parindey I saw. Why? For Deepika Padukone. *Sharm se nazrein jhuki* But her smile… those dimples… those nasheeli albeit andhi nigaahein… those kateeli adaayein… those jhatkas…

And what is this 'Talent Show' Fixation. Did we not see that in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi? Hey wait, was that a spoiler? Not really. What could spoil a movie that has Neil Nitin Mukesh playing a Tilakwadi ka chhapri? Does he even belong there? He BELONGS to New York. May be Napean Sea Road or Bandra. Just doesn't work.

You have to really try hard to convince yourself that NNM is a BOXER who actually takes a few blows as a warm up, bleeds a bit from the corner of his mouth & then in ONE FREAKING SHOT defeats the opponent. Every single time. Every. Single. Time. He just doesn't have a bad day. Even when he does, he WINS. No questions asked. It's like a Saas Bahu serial's re-run. You get the drift…

Deepika is an ambitious (figure) skater who is sick of her Tilakwadi kind of chindi lifestyle and is counting on a Talent Show that is apparently her 'Passport' to a better life. In a scene she makes fun of her sister who is trying to study. WTF. May be, just like her, she thinks even her sister should aim to win a goddamned talent show & hit the jackpot & live happily ever after. Kareena Kapoor would do a few somersaults out of joy watching a few sequences in the film. Such tashan!

Then we have Piyush Mishra who plays a badass DON. The kind that will make you shit your pants. I got goosebumps when he calls out to 'Qasim' who is his 'Sambha'. There is something RICH & AUTHENTIC about the way he says that name 'Qasim'. Am sure most of us wouldn't be able to say that name like Mr. Mishra does. Qasim. Try it now.

There is not much backstory that is served. Piyush Mishra is a Bhai but kiska Bhai? He is seen making money off NNM each time he punches to death a 'born to lose' boxer. NNM WINS. No. Matter. What. He fights. He skates. He dances. He does it all. Unfortunately they didn't get him to sing a song. He would have done that too. And WON. Hands down! For that matter if they would have made NNM cook, he would have defeated Sanjeev Kapoor as well. He JUST wins!

He has got a bike. His friends too. They all drive bikes. They were happy till NNM screws up & they end up with a blind Deepika. Noteworthy here is that Deepika meets an accident. A bloody fatal accident. It was so damn fatal that they had to show it through chindi VFX. But only thing that happens is she goes blind. I have been through an accident, not half as fatal as the one Deepika goes through in the film & was laid up in bed for an year. I didn't go blind.

Thank God. My legs, my hands, my head… all broke. But Deepika just went blind. Nothing broke. Is that what they call PLASTIC? And very soon she is back at her game. You know why? Becuase NNM trained her & When NNM trains you, you have to WIN. Hell YEAH. I hope he trains me in sword swallowing. Even I just might…

The side actors actually steal the show, though their presence is just to fill the frame, as much ever leftover by NNM. Special mention for the kid who is apparently plays NNM's kid brother. Loved his comic timing. So for me, it was just about the two songs, mentioned in the beginning of the review, DEEPIKA (even when she went blind. I love her unconditionally you rascals!), Piyush Mishraji, that kid, a few dialogues & that hot seduction & later make out scene that got edited from the final print

Why did they have to criminally waste KayKay Menon? So I would like to summarize the post by this song from the film: Paanch.
