With actresses like Nargis, Meena Kumari , Nutan and Waheeda rehman there were many more women oriented films in the past . It is the emergence of angry young man AB and later the Khans that heroines were turned into just ice-candies for the movies.

Do not forget the MOTHER of all women oriented role "Mother India" (Nargis)

Kareena JWM and Kareena in Chameli

I don't really know why people are saying Kareena in Kurbaan, because the film was not revolved around her. She was the best in the film though. She acted better than all the men in the film...So i guess thatz why some are saying Kurbaan :P

The best female role ever has to be the role in Mother India played by Nargis.

Other strong female roles:

Rekha - Umrao Jaan

Waheeda Rahman - Pyaasa, Guide

Madhubala - Mughal-E-Azam

Madhuri - Anjaam, Koyla, Prem Granth (though I hated that movie), Aaja Nachle, and some more

Sridevi - Lamhe

Juhi - Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke

Kajol - Fanna, Dushman, Gupt

Rani - Black, KANK

Preity - Veer Zara

Ash - HDDCS

Konkona - Amu, and a few others

That's all I can think of at the moment!
