Indian Box Office and Bollywood awards have always shown that escapism truimphs. For the common man tho its easy to understand why - they face multitude of problems in life, work etc so when they pay the 10 or 100 Rs to watch a movie they want to be out of their world for 2 to 3 hours and forget their world. They do not want to think or overthink (as my husband puts it :P) a movie. Even the dialogues are straightforward and the story is all wrapped up very neatly in the end. Like TZP for example its not enough to show the child has blossmed they have to show the parents being impressed and then the rhona - dhona and thanking the hero etc.
Was that really necessary to show? To me it didnt add to the movie but to a lot of people it did.
I love to watch masala movies from time to time but usually its on DVD so I can switch it off if it gives me a headache.Films like OSO never claimed to be masterpieces so I went in with no expectations and enjoyed it but then again films like Housefull which were marketed as a tribute to the comedies of yesteryears were dreadful.
I thought Raavanan was pretty good actually not sure why it was trashed so badly in Hindi havent watched it yet The story wasnt straight forward and the songs were unnecessary yes but overall it wasnt so bad as the reviews made it out to be.
But Mani Ratnam needs to get back to his family movies - enough of this class struggle already. One thing I have against most of these good directors is they seem to be fixated on these communal riots.. I would prefer to watch a movie like Peepli live which takles a serious subject with some comedy. Films like Firaaq, Parzaania as good as they may be are very disturbing. So I tend to give them a miss these days.Guess I am getting old:P
But I wish these movies get recognized during the award season so people will try to see them atleast on DVD. As someone mentioned above I havent even heard of a movie called Lamha What are the chances that I will watch it?

IMO, the "Rajneeti is a hit ergo, audience has evolved" argument is fallacious as it assumes Rajneeti is inherently different from the melodramatic unrealistic movies that are churned out by the dozens every month or so. At a basic level, Rajneeti replaces overdone romantic melodrama with overdone "political" melodrama.
The characters - if you can even call them that - are more reliant on archetypes (Michael Corleone, Arjun etc) that have been made popular by promotional interviews than on actual character traits that should have been developed throughout the movie. The politcal scenarios are all abstract, including the ever-present cheering crowds and so on. It was all drama and zero realism. That might have been okay too if the *characters* seemed more human but Jha failed to tap into the moral conflict that was at the heart of both Mahabharata and The Godfather. The lack of moral conflict and consideration considerably lowers the literary merits of Rajneeti. There was little to no cultural significance of the setting or anything else really. Rajneeti was about as realistic as SIK, without the "humor". Both movies were similarly random where events happened as per narrative (borrowed from Mahabharata and The Godfather) demands rather than logical ones. All that was required of the audience was to suspend disbelief and disregard all else because politics are important.
On the point of people wanting to watch light movies, I can understand not wanting to watch hard-hitting movies weekly but don't poorly-done masala movies lose their appeal after a while?

Don't judge me because I love Housefull. Does that mean I like welcome, SIK......NO. I hated Welcome, SIK....etcc

But I love movies like Dil Se. I guess I just have my own opinion of what I like in a movie. The movies they listed in the article, I loved Dil se (because it was a story that touched my heart. The movie had super duper Hit songs. I thought the movie was a hit also but I guess not.) I love Chak de india (It was a HIT movie.) I loved Housefull (I laughed while watching the movie that's why. Also loved Swades

Movies like Chak de India, My name is Khan, 3 idiots, Lagaan, Omkara can be super hit. Does that mean audience are so unpredictable that they'll make a dumb movie a hit and than make a so called intelligent movie a hit also. It's about what people like. If it's funny, they'll like it. If it's serious that they like, it touches their heart. If they don't feel connected to that movie, why make it a hit just because a great arty actress or actor was in it.

Even though Preity, Rani are consider as commercial actresses, I would rather watch them millions of times than waste my time in some so called intelligent movies and great arty actresses.

A great way to put it👏 I couldn't say it better. Sometimes people are so stressed out of their own problems and their 7 to 5 jobs that a movie about problems will do a lot of thinking and that's the last thing they want to do after thinking about how to fix their own problems. An entertainment is what they need.

Like you stated, movies like OSO is what my brain needs after working so hard at work😆 I want to forget about the work and just dance to dhoom tana in my own little world.

But like I said in my previous post, I do enjoy serious movies but they have to provide great story and great acting that goes with it.

Raavan may have not worked in the BO or with critics...but I'd watch it thousand times more than something crappy like Housefull. HF makes SIK and Welcome look like gems. I remember watching Imran say in some interview that he hates comedies where the actors are just slapping each other and its called a comedy...that's what I feel abt HF 😊

Some people didn't like Raavan. And I'm an Aish fan as well. That doesn't mean people are so dumb to understand the story. They just didn't like it.

I think the problem with Raavan came down to a poor script, nothing else. The film was promoted well, the music was great but the script was weak. It doesn't mean the genre of films Mani chooses to make is bad, he's had success at the box office before and will again.
As for films like OSO, KI and Houseful, I agree that their scripts weren't the best but I don't think many were expecting they would be. The promos themselves proved that they were nothing but mindless comdies to entertain the audience. Some like the escape.

it is easy to make films like housefull and reap money---but after they have dun their substantial business----they are almost forgotten, where else if u make a movie like dil se or bombay it is a more enriching experience and even though it might flop it will still be remembered as a 'good film'
for instance take guru and housefull for example----both are hits---i think-but guru will be always remembered as a far superior film!!
and movies wid great scripts and great execution ends up doing really well not only in terms of money but also in terms of accolades, how many awards do u think housefull will get??----the answer is none!!!!
conclusion: therefore peeps shud make a good movie like dil se or guru instead of housefull---as it is more enriching, it gets acknowledged as good cinema and wins itself accolades!!! but raavn cums in the third category: it is neither good cinema---as it has no scirpt, the acting is bad, it does not move u or make u think, nor it is entertaining! so yes a film like raavan shud have the fate of being a flop!!! i am really glad that mani has stopped being subserviant to the bachchan family and has decided to cast a hero who cud actually act this time!!

I agree . I don't understand how films like Houseful and SIK work. They are bad.
IMO it wasn't funny at all. These aren't even comedy films. Comedy is films like Andaz Apna Apna , Ishq etc.
