He is nine films old and a reckoned star in his own right but Arjun Rampal's career is on an all-time high. The not-so-happening roles in multistarrers seem nothing in comparison to his recent career moves and the roles of substance he has landed in banners of repute. Starting with the release of EK AJNABEE next week, Arjun has got a formidable line-up of films right from Ram Gopal Varma's DARNA ZAROORI HAI, Karan Johar's KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA (special appearance) to Farhan Akhtar's remake of DON and an English film, LE MERIDIEN. However Arjun points out that it is not a deliberate effort to focus on the so-called notable banners. "I have never planned my career moves earlier nor do I do it now, so this shouldn't be seen as a deliberate effort to work for a specific line-up of projects. I'd been happier if these films would have been offered to me earlier. Nevertheless, I am enjoying this phase in my film," smiles the unassuming actor.
He considers his role in EK AJBANEE as one of the level-best performances of his career. "I am eagerly awaiting for the D-day of the film's release. It was an altogether new experience in acting," he reminisces. Moreover, he has a very stylized look in the film, way apart from any of the roles he has essayed so far. "It was entirely director Apoorva Lakhia's initiative to give me that distinct stylized look. He was very particular about the way he wanted me and Amit-ji (Amitabh Bachchan) in the film. I have always believed that after a point of time in the film, the hair-do, sunglasses and tattoos hold little importance once the audience connects to the character in the film," he says.
According to Arjun, his decision to sign a film is based on how he perceives it from the audience point of view. "I choose a film instinctively by putting myself in the shoes of the audience and how they would react to it. I may like an author-backed role but I may not go for it if I cannot relate to it. On the other hand, I am open to working with complete newcomers and non-banners as long as I like the script," he says.
It is this forthrightness that probably led him to walk out of Rakesh Mehra's RANG DE BASANTI, when he wasn't convinced about the film. "There's no point in talking about the film anymore but the fact remains that my trust was betrayed. I am glad that it happened before the film could take off otherwise I'd been unhappier realizing it. The experience has taught me to be double careful when it comes to imposing my faith in people," he says.
There are also certain people in the trade with whom he admits to sharing a great comfort level and an excellent tuning, factors which make him want to work with them again and again. One such director is Ashok Mehta with whom he last worked in MOKSH and is looking forward to work with him again. "I share a great tuning with him. He's a wonderful person to relate to and we are trying to work out a script for our next film. Hopefully it should happen in due course," he says.
Right now though he is full of the great experience he had shooting with Amitabh Bachchan. "His enthusiasm is infectious. He's a legend in his own right and he leaves an indelible impression on your mind. Working with him was no doubt a unique experience," he says.
