The Idea of a 'Fan'.

We all like or admire some celeb in the world. Whether it's from Hollywood or Bollywood. If we do, then we are labelled as "fans". But there are so many people out there who admire their favourite celebs in different ways. People have certain limits for their fondness. Some don't. I have heard of a case where a man committed suicide just because he couldn't meet his favourite celeb, when she was in his town for shooting. I'm not going to name who that "she" is. I would say what a waste of life! In my opinion, celeberities are not worth it. At the end of the day, they are mere human beings like us, not some Gods who would fulfill our wishes.
Then there are people who like actors because of their work and the roles that they choose. That is it for them. They don't care about looks, it's all about their work. While we do have people who only drool over looks. They don't care about their acting. It's always: "Wow, he looks sooooooooo hottttttt". Or it's: "She looks amazing with him. Their chemistry is fabbbb". We all get put into a group called "fans". Even when you don't follow that celeb's news or don't know much about them. You just like them. There are so many different fans on IF, which you can see for yourself. I am one "fan" myself of many celebrities. Yet I do not consider my life to be wasted on them. It's my life, I can do so many things instead of wasting it on a celeb.
I could go on and on about the various kind of people who do different things for their favourites. But what I wanted ask is that, in your opinion, what is an ideal "fan"? What is your interpretation on this whole matter? What is a "fan" to you?
I just made this topic for some discussion. Everyone has their own opinions and we should respect that so I hope this topic does not turn into battlefield just because you don't agree with somebody else's opnion. Haven't seen a topic like this before, but if there ever was one, please close this. 😊

Great topic. Thank you for opening it. Okay....my opionions will be limited to what I know of fans online on here since I don't know any fans in real life (ideal or crazy).

IMHO (and by saying this by no means I consider myself ideal or superior), an ideal fan is someone who will praise her favorite when he's right and criticize him when he's wrong in reel or real life. The only person who comes to mind on here that was completely sensible would be Pksanam. When the whole SRK frisking incident happened, everyone on here was lampooning SRK, but she did not come in to tell people to stop, she did not criticize and namecall members for criticizing him either. Instead, she started to criticize SRK herself. I thought that was a great thing to do. I also think that is as far as an ideal fan can go on IF.

A crazy fan on the other hand is someone who incessantly goes on and on about her favorite even when its not the place or time. Like, continuosly bringing the favorites' name to put some other actor down, or drooling over the favorite in a topic completely unrelated to him/her. Or, putting members down because they don't agree with them when it comes to their favorites, or trying to befriend members to gather more support for their favorites. All this seems crazy fan behavior to me.

Thanks for your reply, psychobalehead. I completely agree with you. I have seen Pksanam's posts and she is one of the most unbiased fans I have ever come across. Although I never really spoke to her because when she was active, I was a silent reader. I wish she was active again.

Ideal Fan - As they say criticism is the flattest form of flattery, so an ideal fan must be able to have the nerves to notice the apparent flaws and point them out, rather than forcing himself or herself the opposite. He or she must be open minded too and accept that their favorite is a human being, not God or Goddess, and that they can make errors too at times. Also, I feel that an ideal fan must be aware of harsh reality which is that they are not their favorite's PR and neither is their favorite aware of them, so posting death threats and such over an actor is a lunatic fan. As long as appreciation is moderate, such as appreciating looks [Ya, we all do judge looks so I am not going to say it's wrong], but keeping in mind the work they do as well and judging them on a whole.

Crazy fan - Posting death threats to members on behalf of their favorite is a symptom or willing to give away your life for wasted actors...actually that's a hint it's time to be admitted in mental asylum or seek help. [I am serious] Always being anal with your favorite and not being able to differentiate the right and wrong, and basically equating your star to God.

Being biased is OK as we all are, but again in moderation with logical arguments.

Great Topic, BTW.

I don't think that there is any ideal definition of a fan.. This is world wide web.. behave the way you wanna behave.. if some one wants to be crazy fanatic.. be a crazy fanatic.. no one is stopping ya.. the point is don't cry wolf if someone counterattacks.. your ideas or your fav stars.. cauz people will always talk, bicker, complain.. you just cannot shut anyone up.. the key is not to get anyone to affect you.. just do your stuff and be happy.. there is no way to please everyone.. people will think in gazillion ways.. you just cannot make everyone happy.. so accept it and move on.. People are just killing time here.. we all say random stuff and press like buttons accordingly.. we are all moody.. no one should let it get to them.. or behave in the way that are pressured to behave.. just do your own thing.. and enjoy.. this place is not for moral lessons or lectures.. although I love giving them..hehe..

Yeah, I agree with you adios. I guess we all have a set definition in our minds of what "ideal" is.

We come online to say what we really want. In reality some of us don't get to express our feelings. I speak about myself here, don't know about others. I can say what I want here because where I live, nobody knows about Bollywood. So I come online to express my views which I can't say in real life. I feel satisfied because I have finally managed to say my opninons. No one knows each other online (except when you have met them) so you can act freely. Seeing others agree with you makes you do the same, since you know that there are others like you. That's just my view of looking at this though.

I don't know to be honest. I guess each fan thinks that they are the most ideal fans.
I don't think people should take their love for a certain celebrity to the extent of obsession. Things are always good only in moderation. Extremes are never good in my opinion.

Haha super loaded question. Anything I say will probably contradict with the way I act sometimes. LOL. So I am going to stay away from this topic but I agree with what people have written so far.

For me, I think I am a pretty decent fan, not ideal but I know when to care and when not to... and some people don't. I look for both acting and looks because the complete package is always better...

All I'mma say isssssssssssssss, here's my example:
I'm a freakishly huge Taylor Swift fan. Like extremely big. For her songs, voice, the person she comes across as ..etc. but if she goes and has an affair with a 70 year old man, I'mma bash her. If she goes out naked in public, I'll talk about her stupidity. Heck, I even criticisized her for dating someone with the same name as her. (Not that it was the reason .. I just didn't like her with him.) If she helps a hungry child, I'll start blabbering about how much I admire her.
Who gets my drift?
That was my example.
