Akshay Kumar in a still from the movie Blue More Stills

Review this movie

Bollywood goes underwater and comes up a winner. Blue is fresh and fulsome, boasting of some great deep sea shots ( by Pete Zuccarini, cinematographer, Pirates of the Caribbean fame), stunning above sea level action sequences, a crackling background music score and sound design by India's two Oscar winners (AR Rahman and Resul Pookutty), a short and engaging reel length that keeps the proceedings pithy, two hot girls (Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif too in a glam guest role) and a whole lot of guy stuff....Like, bare-bodied Akshay swimming with the sharks and stingrays, lean and mean Zayed blasting away on designer bikes, Sanjay Dutt, sadly with a paunch, sparring with Akshay in the boxing ring and the threesome donning their diving gear to discover a hidden treasure in picture postcard Bahamas.

All this, when they are not pumping up the adrenalin with some rumbustious chiggy wiggy with Kylie Minouge who gets to shake a leg to the quintessential bhangra beat too, with our desi Singh is King.

Yes, Blue, touted as Bollywood's most expensive film (Rs 100 crore) dazzles with style more than substance. More than the storyline, it is the action sequences, the chases, the marine splendour and the opulent canvas of the film that gives you bang for your buck. Of course, you do wish the sharks were meaner, the treasure hunt more perilous, the danger more palpable instead of a climax that wraps up tamely. But the underwater ease with which the trio discovers the sunken loot is compensated with some stunning biker mayhem, atop trains, forests and the alleys of Bangkok and the Bahamas. Add to this, some neatly choreographed song-dance sequences, coupled with moodswings between dosti and dushmani amongst the main protagonists and you have a film that keeps the popcorn crunchy till curtain call.

Most of the drama springs from the unpredictable friendship between fisherman Akshay Kumar and his employee Sanjay Dutt who happens to be the best diver in the Bahamas. Is Akshay truly his buddy or does he need his diving skills to unearth a treasure that lies hidden in Lady in Blue, a British ship that sank in 1949 enroute to India? The entire first half is spent by Akshay in cajoling a reluctant Sanjay Dutt to jump into the ocean and retrieve the treasure. But Dutt has a sordid past which precludes him from taking the big leap, until it becomes imperative to do so...He must fish out the moolah to save his errant kid brother, Zayed Khan, from a biker gang that is desperate for its pound of flesh. Needless to say, the happiest person in this troika is Akshay, the archetypal gold digger who believes greed is truly good. Or does he have another motive up his dapper sleeve?

Amongst the lead players, Sanjay looks a bit out of shape, Zayed is fresh and adequate, while Akshay keeps you guessing about his ethical moorings. The girls, Lara and Katrina, sashay down the screen with aplomb, adding the requisite oomph in this high-on-visuals drama. Go, feast your eyes on brawn and cheesecake.

What's hot:
On the face of it, Blue truly has an international feel about it. It's one of the slickest movies of recent times, Anthony D'Souza gives the film a larger-than-life look. Right from the thrilling title sequence to the sweeping shots of the Bahamas to the exhilarating stunts, visually, Blue is an awe-inspiring experience. You get your money's worth of sharks, dolphins and men in scuba suits. The action is impressive, especially the bike sequences. Lara Dutta looks stunning in her sequined bikinis; Zayed Khan displays spontaneity; and Sanjay Dutt, despite a tad overweight, has a remarkable screen presence. Akshay Kumar, with his grey goatee, has the best lines. He uses dark humor to sketch his character.

What's not:
When a film is just over two hours long and still seems burdensome, you know something's wrong with it. And it's all because of a lack of a tightened script and a novel screenplay. At the end of it, Blue comes across as a bunch of good-looking scenes put together, devoid of any depth or emotion. Anthony fails to even establish any connection between the characters - be it Akshay-Sanjay or Sanjay-Zayed or Lara-Sanjay, each relationship seems superficial. Sanjay's refusal to go look for the treasure drags for far too long. And his reasoning is not even convincing. The loopholes are far too many - that's why all the multiple bike chases, babes prancing in bikinis, blowing houses, guns and Kylie Minogue have limited impact. There's no emphasis on the dialogues too - Akshay's repeated 'sethji' and 'sarkar' routine gets on your nerves after a while. Katrina's guest appearance makes no impact.

In totality, 'Blue' is a damp squib that fails to live up to the expectations it had raised. But for the overdone hype, it might have earned better ratings.

Ratings: Two cheers for this one!

I had missed the press show of Blue for some reason but since work compels I opted for the first show of the movie, the earliest show I have ever caught. 7 o'clock in the morning is always very early for a movie. But to my surprise I was not alone. In fact, the hall was quite full with only a few seats left vacant. Such a turnout at such a time slot – Blue surely generated enough hype, I thought. But does it deserve all the attention is a different matter altogether.

To start with, Blue does have a story. Plus it is one rare Indian film about a treasure hunt, while Hollywood keeps them coming by the dozen! A super diver Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) who 'knows the ocean like the back of his hand' is supposed to be the only person who knows where a ship containing a lot of treasure sank, while cruising on its way to India. And this is somewhere near the Bahama coast where this Indian guy lives. He works with a rich businessman Aarav Malhotra (Akshay Kumar) who is very inquisitive about the treasure but Sagar keeps denying the story. Sam (Zayed Khan) and Mona (Lara Dutta) are the two people Sagar cares about. Situations are created where Sagar has to opt for the treasure hunt. Life comes full circle here as he is made to do the same thing to save his only family that had actually led to the death of his father. And there is a reasonable suspense in the film.

To add to this story, Blue has blazing cinematography. It is just awesome. In fact, just the opening credits are a thorough paisa vasool along with AR Rahman's music. Though the music as a stand alone, in my opinion, is one of Rahman's most forgettable works, it works in the film, especially the background. And accompanying sounds show Oscar winner Resul Pookutty is not a winner for nothing.

But despite these, Blue does not translate into anything great. It falls as a rather mediocre piece of work. And that's because of the thin screenplay. While the first half does not make sense and refuses to move, the suspense that is supposed to be the factor that holds the story turns too weak. And weaker is the way it is revealed. The entire first half is wasted on efforts to tell people how good a diver Sagar is, how good a racer Sam is, and how intelligent Aarav is. And most of it is added just to make the film more flamboyant rather than tell the story better. Sigh! May be the first half could have been edited out. Wonder who to blame – the writer or the editor! The action that the film promises does not come through screenplay and fast narration but with a few bike races and under water stunts.

On the scale of performance, Akshay Kumar does a job which is appreciable. But Sanjay Dutt looks aged and not too fit for the action. What a contrast as he romances a younger looking Lara Dutta. Lara on her part, looks every bit the Miss Universe, the crown she won years back. She has a lot to show and she shows. And don't wonder about the scope for acting though. It clearly looks she was just there to flaunt designer bikinis and lingerie! Zayed is decent and shows signs of getting better with emotions. Rahul Dev is as cool as the gun he carries. Katrina does not have much to flaunt except an interesting new hairstyle and her accent. You could look forward to Kylie Minogue's fleeting appearance though – a couple of dialogues apart from the song. She is HOT!

Overall, Blue somehow justifies one perception. Western stars are too eager to work in a Bollywood flick. And they don't bother to check the script when offered one. Kambakkht Ishq indicated it when a film featuring stars like Dennis Richards and Sylvester Stallone turned out to be a dampener. And Blue adds more weight to it. Kylie surely didn't bother to check the script or they just have bad judgment. So if you want some international stars, just get a big banner to produce it. Script does not seem to matter much, so far at least! If you ask me what the rest of my morning was after watching the 7am show, I would say – Mourning Blues!

Blue Review

3 reasons to watch Blue

Underwater visuals : Sequences filmed underwater are a pure visual treat, something never witnessed in Bollywood before. Credit : Peter Zuccarini (Pirates of the Caribbean) Fabulous Action : About 4 Bike sequences provide the necessary adrenaline rush, the sequence on the train is the best of the lot.
  • Lara Dutta : Not in the history of Bollywood has an actress managed to look so stunning in a Bikini. Lara Dutta, for two thirds of her role, is clad looking super-hot in a variety of two-piece bikini's.

Several reasons why Blue should be avoided!

Where's the script? Like every other Akshay Kumar movie, Blue has a utterly stupid plot and completely lacks substance. Watching Blue is like flipping between Discovery (or National Geographic) and MTV on television. Just that the later would be much more informative, interesting and entertaining. The director takes his own sweet time to get the point, the treasure hunt begins 20 mins into the second half and ends before you could blink an eye lid! The whole build up and the fall-out after the discovery of the treasure is a joke! Dialogues are unintentionally funny. Music by A.R Rahman surprisingly isn't up to his usual high standards. Background score is weak. In a poorly sketched character, Akshay Kumar sleep walks through his role. Sanjay Dutt looks tired and old. Zayed Khan looks good, but makes no impact.
  • Katrina Kaif looks stunning, all good until she gets to mouth dialogues.

Movie Review: BLUE; Star cast: Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta, Zayed Khan, Rahul Dev and Katrina Kaif (Sp. App); Director: Anthony D'Souza; Rating: *1/2 - A BIG dissappointment.

Sagar (Dutt) and Aarav (Akshay) are good friends settled in the Bahamas. While Sam is a happy go lucky rich businessman, Sagar is down to earth and not as ambitious as him. Aarav on many occasions tries to instigate Sagar on coming out with the secret of 'The Lady In Blue' a ship carrying a huge gold treasure that was sunk in 1949 in the Bahamas seas. Aarav believes Sagar knows the route to the deep sunken ship and they both can benefit from the huge treasure that lies inside it. Sagar however doesn't like to discuss about the ship nor has any interest for the treasure hunt. Just then Sagar's younger brother Sam (Zayed) arrives from Bangkok after five years. Mafia boss Gulshan (Rahul) is hot on his trail for an assignment worth 50 million dollars gone wrong. With Gulshan too arriving in Bahamas and kidnapping his girlfriend Mona (Lara), Sagar has only 24 hours left for paying back the huge money which Sam has messed with. He is now left with no option but face his old demons and plunge into the deep sea with Aarav and Sam for the treasure hunt.

A really interesting premise shot beautifully but messed big time by unimaginative writing and lackluster direction is what Blue shall always be remembered as. The setting is different no doubt, but where are the requisite twists and turns and pace which are a must for this genre of films? The so called major twist that comes out in the end can be guessed quiet earlier in the first half itself. Also, almost the entire first half moves around with zero grip on the audience with more than enough time wasted on character establishment. The much hyped shark sequences are a big let down what with barring the opening sequence of few minutes (where believe it or not Akshay and Dutt literally ride a shark) there is not a single scene where the sharks are a threat and get you on the edge of your seat. The bike chase sequences have been shot very well though. The underwater sequences have been superbly lit up and one needs to salute the team of cameramen involved for it. The climax is extremely 'thanda' and derives unintentional laughter as well. Songs don't really fit in well and the Kylie Minogue starring Chiggy Wiggy number doesn't really work on screen. However, the background music and sound editing is excellent.

Akshay is in his element in here playing the flirty cool dude with a hidden agenda with amazing natural ease. Dutt approaches his part with zero enthusiasm and worse, his paunch is visible in many sequences. But Zayed is good and Rahul Dev impresses too. Lara Dutta is super hot and does ample skin show. Katrina Kaif in a special appearance doesn't work at all.

Said to be over Rs. 100 crore in budget, Blue doesn't justify the mega budget it has been allotted and first timer director Anthony D'Souza gets it all wrong mistaking style and extra coolness quotient for substance.

If you want to experience some good underwater photography on a big screen and a few well shot action sequences, then you can go for it but if you are expecting something more then let us warn you that you will be in for a BIG disappointment!

On a whole BLUE is a stylish film and is a wonderful experience. The standards of the Indian cinema are surely to raise and induce people to think out of the box.
