We want to nurture Pakistani talent

Mahesh Bhatt on cross-border collaborations and other topics close to his heart

picture: Viral Bhayani

Masala! meets Mahesh Bhatt in Dubai Media City, just as he completes a Geo TV interview. The outspoken director is open, welcoming and cheerful and settles down for a free and frank chat.

You are working with many Pakistani artistes. Why isn't more collaboration actually happening?

We are currently working on a collaboration with Pakistani producer/actor Humayun Saeed on a project that is essentially a Pakistani product, with 70% of the talent being theirs and 30% being Indian and international.

In what way does the Bhatt camp endorse this project?

I give my creative force to the project and one of our ace writers, Shagufta Rafiq, makes her foray into direction. We want to kick start a process which will nurture, harness and tap Pakistani talent. They have the talent but sadly their industry is crumbling. This move should build the support for the cinema culture which exists in Pakistan.

Do you feel Dubai is a good place for exchange of ideas between Pakistanis and Indians?

It is an excellent place where both communities coexist without any animosity.

You were here with Pooja a few days back shooting Kajra Re…

Great (with a twinkle in his eyes)! It looks splendid on screen. Again we have a great Indian and Pakistani team working on this film. We have well-known Pakistani actors Tipu and Javed Shaikh as part of this project. It was lovely shooting here! The people here have a very friendly approach.

Why did you call a press conference for the Emraan Hashmi apartment issue?

It was a shameful incident of a young Indian boy in secular India being deprived of buying a flat because he is a Muslim. He was just a face to the malice that goes far deeper than visible.

Has Emraan been able to purchase the apartment?

No, but the issue resulted in the Minister of Foreign Affairs introducing a Bill on the rights of the community.

WHAT NONSENSE???? I am sooo angry at myself and feeling so sorry now that I didnt post an article here. Emraan in the end said something like "There was just misunderstanding. No problem. All solved." Something like this in that article. Denying all that he said. When I read it, I remembered the quote of some member who said Saif had done such a similar thing and in the end he said sorry too and that nothing like that happened.
Such a gross guy. Get lost!!! I ma try and find that article. Its gonna be hard but let me do it

no i think that article was posted here on BS. and i too remm people saying that saif also did similar things and later apologised. that looser imran did not have any proof also to back what he was saying. they just made up a story on their own. and the reason was something else only altogether something like brokers misunderstanding.

Mon, Aug 10 04:06 PM

Mumbai, Aug 10 (PTI) Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi, who had caused a stir by alleging religious profiling in posh Pali Hill area, has taken a U-turn, terming the incident a "miscommunication". "There has been a miscommunication.

The society had not discriminated against me and has today said that if anyone wants to sell their house in the building, I can buy it," Hashmi told reporters after a hearing at the Minorities Commision. The controversy on the allotment of flat to Hashmi at the Nibana housing society in the posh Pali Hill at suburban Bandra was resolved today.

Last week, Hashmi had alleged that he was denied a No Objection Certificate (NOC) by the society because they did not want the flat to go to a Muslim. Hashmi had approached the State Minorities Commission, seeking its intervention but the issue has been solved amicably.

"The broker Jagjit Arora had told Emraan that the society had refused to sell him the flat as he was a Muslim. However, the secretary of the society today said that they had not received the flat," Majid Memon, Hashmi''s lawyer, said.

The owner of the flat D U Suvarna said that he will be happy to sell the flat to the actor who is like a "son" to him. "If in future I decide to sell the flat, then my first choice will be Emraan," he said.
