Shah Rukh is a global icon and is always welcome, says US Ambassador
Updated on Saturday, August 15, 2009, 16:09 IST
Spicezee Bureau

New Jersey: After being detained for as long as two hours early on Saturday at the Newark airport in the US, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said that he would avoid coming to US now, for he doesn't want to be a part of America's paranoia of religion. Reacting to the actor's statement about the country, the US Ambassador Timothy J Roemer said, "Shah Rukh is a global icon and is always welcome in the US. Many Americans love his films."

Roemer's statement has come as the first reaction of American government to Shah Rukh's detaining episode.

Khan, who is on a visit to the US to attend an Indian Independence Day event as the guest of honour, was released after intervention from Congress MP Rajiv Shukla, who spoke to the authorities in the US and the Indian consulate. However, the US Embassy says that they are still finding out what really happened at the incident.

"We are clarifying. We are trying to ascertain facts about the incident," US Embassy official said.

SRK was reportedly detained because of his surname 'Khan' that features on the alert list of US airport officials since the 9/11 attacks. According to reports, the actor was detained after his name flashed on the computer. Khan was asked a bounty of questions about the purpose of his visit. His hand baggage was checked and he was not even allowed to make a single phone call for about an hour.

In a statement given to a news daily, SRK said, "I told them I was a movie star and had recently visited the country for the shooting of my film. Nothing seemed to convince the immigration officer. There were other immigration officers who even vouched for me but this particular officer did not listen to anyone. I even told them I had an invitation from the South Asian community and was there to attend an event."

This episode, quite ironically, comes at a time when SRK is wrapping up Karan Johar's 'My Name Is Khan', a film touching upon the same issue, that of the minority being targeted for no fault of theirs only because of suspicion and no solid proof.

The actor is to return to India on August 18.

knowing how much a lot of Indians star worship their faves, i wouldn't be surprised if riots break out and his fans start stoning anything American and some may die in the process.. srsly, SRK should have known better than exploit a sensitive issue..

In the first place they travel to the states to shoot most of their movies to add flashiness and picture perfect movies and then they tend to show that overseas countries are so so bad. What a terrible publicity stunt. Ex-Presidents didn't throw tantrums but we have a rather foxy star here seeking pity. Welcome to reality highty mighty thinking folks. If you chose to travel overseas, follow the laws and usual procedures.

Owing to this incident, should the US avoid taking the necessary precautions in order that are in place to avoid a repeat of 9/11, become as lenient as the Indian Govt. and turn their heads the other way when an actor with a large fanbase is involved? It really isn't so much an "issue" as it is a basic safety precaution. At the very least, it shows that US doesn't have a hebetudinous front when it comes to the security of its own people.

I dont wanna streach this issue like a chewing gum..lol.. But we live in uncertain times.. u dont know who to trust.. Maybe Srk was insulted and it was more then just regular procedure that they went through wid him or maybe not.. But I dont wanna be too quick to judge Srk and say that he is doing all this for publicity for his film and all... even Srk is rational enough to know that if he says something then it would be scrutanized..So overall I dont know who to trust but I definately dont blame Srk for raising this issue.. He did what he thought was right.. and the officers did their part.

why do some people feel SRK would do this for publicity??? i mean does he really need to resort to such cheap tactics? and plus his movie's not releasing till the end of the year. and if im not wrong there's a difference between being detained and being held for security checks. either we're misunderstanding or the people reporting this issue don't know the difference between the two.

Ok for me SECURITY is security.
It knows no stars or celebrities....it only knows procedures and practices which are same for a common man and the celebrity.
I think it makes me feel safe when I am flying and staying here in US.
But WHY to bring it out now and say it is all becasue my name is KHAN...oh isn't it he name of his upcoming movie.......mystery solved....
But on serious tone - I think the reason that there are no more attack here it THIS - security...
I know how US feels after 9/11...I see young 21-22 yrs old kids send to fight in Iraq and they die young...I see cars with those thing on the back..it makes me feel bad for all....

Oscars....you're dead on the target, Pichchi....I'm glad I'm not the only one who senses publicity for MNIK out of all this hupla. I do remember reading an article few days ago where KJO or Kunal kapoor was claiming that MNIK will have the same opening as Slumdog Millionaire since its backed by FOX. And that they want the GLOBAL audience to watch their movie as opposed to just the NRI (as is usually the case with KJO movies)

Welll......I guess they won't have to go very far to get that pot of gold after all. I'm honestly disgusted by all of this. I just hope innocent fans back in india won't get hurt or die due to a possible riot. 😡

Ha, the moment I saw this on the "Breaking News" in the morning, that this would be bigger news than anything else in the country.

Like the many people before me, I'd like to stress that the safety and security of my family and country means more to me than the ego of some movie star. The security agents were just doing their job. Yes, it's extremely unfortunate and unfair that people are being targeted for the faith they follow, and in no way do I condone it, but I'd rather the security personnel take their own required time to keep the country safe. Granted, SRK may not be a threat to the nation's security, but if this was someone who ultimately was involved in some criminal activities, the blame would be put on the DHS, saying that they were negligent. So damned if you do, damned if you don't?

I'd like quote a part of the blog from TOI that raised a very valid point that is often ignored:
SRK says he's ''upset and angry'' because it was his Muslim name that caused all this. Thousands of Muslims are made to go through extra security checks everyday in America and a host of Western countries. Is he equally upset at that? He's probably just pissed that it happened to him, India's mega star. We all know how a lot of Muslims have been subjected to prejudice around the world because many countries see terrorism as an Islamic phenomenon. Yes, it is uncalled for, unjust and maybe wrong. But America is a country that takes the killings of its people with the seriousness it deserves, unlike India whose record on this is shameful, to say the least.
To all the Indians rioting and burning effigies of Obama, I'd like to ask them, where all this passion was when it comes to the few hundreds of their own countrymen that were killed and injured on 26/11, and there was such widespread destruction to public and private property?? No rioting or questioning into THAT incident, which highlighted a serious lapse in security, other than for a few hours after it. And 26/11 is not the only incident. There have been numerous attacks on India, such as on the Parliament, the Delhi blasts in 2005, Mumbai train attacks, the Malegaon attacks, numerous attacks in the north-eastern parts.... After all these incidents, people made a lot of noise for a week and then went back to their own lives, blaming the government and the elected officials. Why? Because so what if a few common Indians die, several hundred will be born to replace them within the hour? Because they were just the faceless middle-class, and not famous movie stars like SRK? Please. Look within your own country and demand answers for the injustice being meted out to common people like YOU, rather than for someone like SRK, who has members of the media and his film fraternity to kiss his butt and soothe his fevered brow over the "grave injustices" meted out to him. America takes the security and safety of its citizens very seriously, unlike India does, and looks to act promptly, unlike India which JUST sentenced the suspects of the 2003 Mumbai blasts last month. HONESTLY? 6 YEARS, TO FINALLY COME TO A VERDICT ABOUT AN ATTACK THAT KILLED MORE THAN 50 AND INJURED 250??!!? Instead of chastising American security agencies for doing their job, try to push our own country to implement such stringent security measures to ensure there isn't another terrorist attack killing hundreds of innocent people.

Look, I have nothing against SRK, I'm quite fond of his movies, but does he really think he's above the law, and that too, not of his own country, but others too?
Ultimately, what has SRK really done for the country that the common man is getting so outraged on his behalf? Such concern for a movie star, when absolutely nothing for FORMER PRESIDENT, AND FATHER OF THE COUNTRY'S MISSILE TECHNOLOGY, who has done far more for the country that SRK will ever do in his lifetime. The country is facing far more important issues at this moment, than trying to placate a MOVIE STAR.

I don't get the reason why he had to leak it out to media- He knows that he has a massive fan base. From the platform where he stood, it was reasonably foreseeable that this issue would create a havoc amongst fans. Resentment and uprising. Why don't we hear of individual cases where torture is inflicted? Far outrageous than mere humiliation of a well known celebrity. Why are there prevalent international laws regarding diplomatic immunity? Even the government officials including PM's and President's cannot escape under the cloak of immunity in a legal sense. The point is national security overrides every other argument. If a pop star legend like Elvis can come under FBI scrutiny for Communism linkage than what is so huge when a popular, influential indian celebrity is being detained for security purposes. Yes he is a Muslim, Yes there is discrimination in this world. But idealism and idealistic point of view is just saved for text books. Practical world out there has substantive issues to ponder upon rather than mere intricacies like humiliation faced by a particular actor.

@Darkness_123: Thank you!!! 👏

Also,I find it really surprising that SRK is actually using the religion card with such vigor here. Did cat get his tongue during the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai then? How come he kept on insisting that the attackers had no religion despite the fact that those attackers were practicing Muslims? How come he was all about "terrorists have no religion" back then?
