Hit or flop? With B'wood con artists, you never know

Mumbai: If producers in Bollywood were to be believed, every film released on Friday ends up making huge money.

But is it really true? "Sometimes producers publish 'super hit' posters even before the film has released. It's clear that some producers play with the audience when their film is not working," says filmmaker Suparn Verma.

A case in point is the recent release Kambakkht Ishq. Considering the high-profile star cast, a flamboyant producer and Sylvester Stallone as an added attraction, Kambakkht Ishq was expected to be a big hit.

The Rs 62-crore film recovered its cost and is considered an average film but that didn't stop the producers from insisting that it had apparently collected over Rs 100 crore at the BO.

Not just that, the success party came before the actual success.

"They have to put up ads because they have to keep the investors happy. They have to keep the stars happy. Now Akshay has to prove that this was his comeback film after three flops," says trade analyst Amod Mehra.

In the past too there have been such dubious claims made by filmmakers. For a long time the producers of the biggest flop of 2009 Chandni Chowk to China claimed that the film was running to packed houses.

Fact is that Chandni Chowk to China is one of the biggest flops in Akshay Kumar's career.

The ads of last year's biggest dud Love Story 2050 said that the film at some point was running successfully, which is obviously hard to believe.

Even Yashraj Films went to town claiming that their Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic was a hit but truth is that this Saif-Rani-starrer actually bombed at the box-office.

Despite the multiplex revolution and Bollywood going corporate, the Indian box-office remains disorganized. There is still no transparent system of ascertaining how much a Hindi film has earned through ticket sales.

But question is do producers in Bollywood want this sector to get organized or do they prefer it the way it is?
