'Films from the 1980's are still hounding us'
Mumbai: Cinema has always been a reflection of its time. In the 1970's Mr Bachchan projected the angst of the common man, which is why most of his films were superhits.
The 1960's were about post-Independence. So most films made in the 1960's were set in the hill stations.
Because there was political mayhem, the 1980's was all about remakes. However, it was the worst part of our films. We said nothing. In fact, films of the 1980's are still hounding us. Even now, we are bearing the consequences.
The films of the last decade were all about mushy love stories. Some of the best films are love stories -- be it Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Raja Hindustani, or Hum Aapke Hai Kaun.
Since we've gone in the 2000 zone, there have been just three or four love stories. All the iconic films have been on socially relevant themes be it Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, or Chak De! India.
