If the buzz in Bollywood is to be believed, all is not well with Kamal Hassan's daughter Shruti Haasan, a budding actress and singer and her mother actress Sarika.
Apparently, mother and daughter have not been in touch or even on talking terms for quite some time now.
According to a source from Mumbai, who is close to Sarika, the trouble started when Shruti finished her education in London and decided to move back to Chennai and live with her father Kamal Haasan and his friend, former actress Gowthami.
Sarika is believed to have been against Shruti's decision and started to distance herself from her daughter.
According to the source, Shruti had attempted to reconcile with Sarika on several occasions. "Shruti tried to call her mother on several occasions and sent her SMSes, but they went unanswered," said Sarika's friend.
When Shruti made her debut as a singer at the launch of Rolling Stones magazine, the entire family — Kamal, Gowthami and sister Akshara — were present to cheer her. But Mumbai-based Sarika was conspicuous by her absence.
Later Shruti performed once again with her band the Extra Mentals at a night club in Mumbai and repeatedly asked her mother to come. But Sarika stayed away.
The reason for the rift is believed to be Gowthami's bond with the children. The actress is not only a friend, philosopher and guide to Shruti, but will also accompany her to South Africa, where a schedule of her debut film Luck with Imran Khan is being shot.
When contacted Shruti, she didn't deny the rift. The forthright young star clarified, "I admit that there has been some distance between me and my mother. Nevertheless, I love my mother dearly and I am grateful to her for bringing me into this world and for everything she has done for me. Having said that, the members of my family and I have tried extending our hand to her on several occasions. But I believe it's her life and her personal choice if she chooses not to communicate with us. I respect her decision and do not intend on forcing my will on her."
