Surgery over, SRK can flex his muscles soon --

Bharati Dubey, Meena Iyer & Madhavi Rajadhyaksha | TNN

Actor Shah Rukh Khan underwent a 90-minute surgery on Monday for a torn muscle in his left shoulder. Doctors said the minimally invasive surgery was a complete success and he could go home in a day or two though his left arm would have to be in a sling for four to six weeks.

The surgery was carried out at Breach Candy Hospital, where actor Amitabh Bachchan was operated upon after his life-threatening injury on the sets of Coolie in 1982. Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, too, has been a patient here; he came here in 2000 for a knee-replacement surgery.

Khan went under the scalpel at 4.30 pm. Shoulder specialist Sanjay Desai said there was a partial tear in the left shoulder since 2003 but, with the actor ignoring it, it developed into a complete tear about six weeks ago. "Khan is now out of anaesthesia and is talking normally. The stitches will be off in 10-11 days though he can go home in a day or two,'' Desai said on Monday evening after the surgery.

Khan arrived from London on a Jet Airways flight at 11.45 am and got himself admitted to the hospital around 2 pm after going home for a shower. "I'm in a little bit of pain,'' Khan told TOI before boarding the flight from Heathrow in London. "I can feel the pain return when the effect of the painkiller wears off; guess the pain is sharper as it is colder here in London,'' he added.

"I first hurt myself and tore a tendon about four years ago and it used to hurt when I danced or worked out. More recently, while doing a scene for Dulha Mil Gaya last November, I fell on my shoulder and hurt myself again. I did not realise how serious it was and continued shooting but the pain was excruciating. The doctor then said I must go under the knife within 21 days,'' Khan said.

He denied being nervous. "In fact, a while ago, wife Gauri was asking me whether I was nervous about the surgery. And I told her that I would live this life all over again — injuries, surgeries and all — provided my last film was a hit,'' he quipped. Khan was accompanied to the hospital by Gauri, film-maker Karan Johar, actor Juhi Chawla and a couple of close associates. He is likely to return to work by the end of March.

Super-fit, Super-fast

By Santosh Andhale
Posted On Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 02:19:05 AM

Resting right now in the sea-facing room number 404 of D-South at the Breach Candy Hospital is Shah Rukh Khan. SRK underwent a shoulder surgery (for rotator cuff tear) at the Breach Candy Hospital yesterday.

He is required to stay at the hospital for two to three days. According to experts, it will take him about 15 days before he is able to resume shooting actively.

Before being wheeled into the operation theatre, SRK had told the doctors attending on him that his kids wanted him to do Superman-like movies and that he wanted to get super-fit at the earliest. Dr Sanjay Desai,

Arthroscopist & Joint Replacement surgeon, who performed the one-and-half hour surgery on the star, said, "It was a corrective surgery for his torn muscle in the shoulder called rotator cuff tear. The muscle is stitched for restoration."

Why it happens

A rotator cuff tear may be the end result of either, long-standing impingement or trivial trauma to an already degenerate muscle.

A rotator cuff tear can be quite disabling, as the patient is unable to lift the arm. This torn muscle can be repaired by arthroscopic technique using special soft tissue anchors.

The shoulder arthroscopy, requires no blood transfusion or staying in Intensive Care Unit. It is conducted under general anaesthesia.

Shah Rukh's shoulder surgery successful at Breach Candy

Spicezee Bureau

Mumbai, Feb 16: Done with all the hustle-bustle surrounding the release of his flick 'Billu', Shah Rukh Khan has undergone the much needed shoulder surgery at the Breach Candy hospital on Monday.

Shah Rukh to be discharged in a day or two.The actor, who has been in severe pain since November, had put the much-recommended surgery on hold for the promotion of his home production 'Billu'. The actor had apparently injured his shoulder badly on the sets of his upcoming venture 'Dulha Mil Gaya'.

Speaking to reporters the actor had said, "I hurt myself and tore a tendon about four years ago. That time it used to hurt when I danced or worked out. Recently, while doing a scene in 'Dulha Mil Gaya', I fell on my shoulder and hurt myself again. Not realising how serious it was, I shot for and completed 'My Name is Khan'. By then the pain was excruciating and the doctor said I must go under the knife within 21 days. Post surgery, my arm will be in a sling for six weeks."

A hospital spokesperson told Spicezee.com, "There is a surgery scheduled for today on Mr Khan. A few days after he fell while shooting, he came to us and we recommended him to go in for an immediate surgery."

Talking about the reason that delayed the surgery, the spokesperson said, "Shah Rukh needed to finish a few assignments before the surgery. He told us that he could bear pain and has made no special demands from his end".

Orthopadic surgeon Dr Sanjay Desai, who operated on SRK, said in an exclusive byte to Spicezee.com, "A few weeks ago Shah Rukh came to me with complaint of pain. He informed he had had a fall and had torn the rotator cuff muscle of his shoulder, as per previous diagnosis." He further added, "However, he being a dedicated actor, could not undergo the surgery immediately. He said that he has the capacity to bear pain, and he will wait till all his commitments are completed."

Shah Rukh was admitted for the pre-sugery tests at around 4:15pm. His operation started at 5:30pm. He will be shifted from the ICU to a private ward at around 9pm.

Here's wishing King Khan a fast recovery.

SRK has quick surgery after long delay

Mumbai Put off since November, shoulder operation completed in 1 hours

For months, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan had been putting off a surgery on his shoulder because of his shooting and promotional schedules. He needn't have worried; the operation was over and done with in one-and-a-half hours at Breach Candy Hospital.

Once it had been completed successfully, he waved and exchanged smiles with his wife. He will wear a sling around his arm for four to six weeks.

SRK (43) had hurt himself on the sets of a film in November last year. He let the surgery wait for fear that it would upset his schedule, much of which involved promoting Billu.

Dr Sanjay Desai, an arthroscopic shoulder specialist, conducted the operation. "The surgery began at 4.30 pm and ended at 6. It went off as planned," he said. Apart from Dr Desai, the team attending to SRK included Dr Rajiv Sharma, his personal medical adviser and physician, and Dr Ali Irani, physiotherapist at Breach Candy.

SRK had a supraspinatus tear, a condition where the rotator cuff tears and causes inflammation and pain. This restricts movement of the shoulder. He had suffered a supraspinatus partial tear in 2003; the tear became total after the accident.

"He chose to do physiotherapy to strengthen his muscle. However, when he injured himself again in November last year, the partial tear developed into a complete tear, leaving no option but surgery," Irani said.

"Shah Rukh had done an MRI and a CT scan in Los Angeles and had the choice of having the surgery there. However, he chose to undergo surgery in Mumbai as he had faith in Indian doctors and also wanted to stay with his family," said Dr Desai.

"He will require 4 to 6 weeks of physiotherapy. Till then his arm will have to be in a sling. It will take 5 to 6 months to completely recover," said Dr Desai.

SRK returned from London, halted at his house, then went to the hospital with his wife Gauri and friend Karan Johar.

HOW IT'S DONE:
* Arthroscopic surgery: A minimally invasive procedure, involving little pain as well as a short recovery time.
* How it's different: The joint does not need to be opened up fully. Instead, only two small incisions are made, one for the arthroscope and the other for surgical instruments.
* Where it's done: Joints of the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle, and hip
* Cost: Rs 1 lakh-Rs 3 lakh

SRK recuperating from shoulder surgery

February 17, 2009 10:55 IST

Shah Rukh Khan, who underwent a surgery to repair the tear in the main muscle of his left shoulder, is recovering well, doctors attending on him here said on Tuesday.

Shoulder specialist Dr Sanjay Desai, who led the team of doctors to operate on the 43-year-old actor-producer, said Khan had recovered well and had a normal diet.

"I will be visiting him later in the day," Dr Desai said, adding that he is discussing with the actor's family whether to discharge him today or tomorrow.

Khan was operated on Monday at south Mumbai's [Images] Breach Candy hospital.

"The Arthroscopic method of surgery, which was performed on the star does not require opening of the entire joint. The surgery ensure less pain and minimal scar," the doctor said.

The actor had injured his shoulder on the sets of Dulha Mil Gaya in November last.

Shah Rukh [Images] was in London [Images] to promote his latest film Billu during the weekend and returned to Mumbai on Monday after which he was admitted to the hospital in the afternoon.

His wife, Gauri is with him in the hospital.

SRK out of action, no fight scenes for six months

TimePublished on Tue, Feb 17, 2009 at 12:57 in Entertainment section

LONG LEAVE: Actor Shah Rukh Khan will take at least six months

Mumbai: No heavy-duty action scenes for actor Shah Rukh Khan for the next six months, say doctors who successfully operated upon him for a nagging pain in the left shoulder.

"Shah Rukh's surgery went off fine and he should be back home in two days. However, he will require some good rest for a long period and he has been advised not to do any strenuous work," said Sanjay Desai, orthopaedic surgeon at Breach Candy Hospital here.

So, in effect Shah Rukh will be on a forced break for six weeks to fully recuperate. However, he will host the Filmfare awards.

He can take up heavy-duty action scenes only after six months.

"It's a normal precaution that one has to take. The surgery was long pending and it is good that he finally took out time for it. Keeping in mind that he would only become busier in months to come, it made sense that he got himself operated before it was too late," Desai said.

King Khan underwent an arthroscopic surgery for a nagging pain in his left shoulder Monday. His family, friends and fans heaved a sigh of relief when it was announced that the surgery, which lasted 45 minutes, had been successful. A team of three doctors performed the surgery.

The last few months have been especially tiring for Shah Rukh as he was working non-stop on the promotion of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, shooting for My Name Is Khan and then promoting Billu. In fact, he went on an overdrive for the promotion of "Billu" and was attending as many as eight events a day. He had injured his shoulder a long time ago, but the pain aggravated in December last year.

Farah Khan, who was by his side in the hospital till late Monday evening, told IANS: "He went to sleep after the surgery. He was in too much of pain."

Mushtaq Sheikh, Shah Rukh's close friend and also the writer of just released Billu, is also relieved.
"The surgery was successful. Allah has been kind. We are now waiting for his complete recovery," he said.

Being the professional that he is, Shah Rukh made sure his producers would not suffer because of his surgery and forced break.

Currently, Shah Rukh has only two films on the floors - Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan and Viveck Vaswani's Dulha Mil Gaya.

While he has already finished shooting for an extensive part of My Name Is Khan, in Dulha Mil Gaya he has an extended guest appearance for which only a qawwali featuring him with Sushmita Sen remains to be shot.

"He will be back in a big way, just wait and watch," said Vishal Dadlani (of Vishal-Shekhar duo). "He has earned the goodwill of people, and one thing which is real in this world is that if people wish you well, you will get up sooner than you could ever imagine."

"Anyone who has ever worked with Shah Rukh will vouch for the fact that he is incomparable," Vishal said in an emotional tone. "He gives every individual respect and a lot of space as well. He is a phenomenal producer and a much-loved star of billions of people across the globe. He has everyone's good wishes."
