At 43, he is the undisputed superstar with the world at his feet. But there was a time in Shah Rukh Khan's life when his parents could not afford gifts for him. King Khan told this to reporters who he had invited for a birthday celebration at his residence on Sunday, and also to promote his next film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. "The best gift that I could get from my father was an old Parker pen wrapped in a new wrapping paper. The pen didn't even work but that was okay for me because the gift came from my father," said Shah Rukh. Shah Rukh's father Meer Taj Mohammad had come to Mumbai to become an actor and had tried for a role in Mughal-e-Azam in the 1950s. He had also wanted to meet Ashok Kumar. After spending a year in Mumbai did not provide any break for him as an actor, he moved to Delhi and did a series of businesses. He tried his hand at the restaurant, furniture and lorry businesses respectively, but none of them were successful. "My father had his good times and then when bad times came he started gifting me old things on my birthday. On another occasion, he gifted me an old typewriter, and wished me happy birthday. I am very sentimental about that gift and I have still kept that typewriter with me as a memory of my father," added King Khan. Meer died when Shah Rukh was 15-years old.

The best memory of his birthday, he said, was when he was a child and went around distributing chocolates to his friends in school.

He has seen bad times and been through financial crunches.......And now to see his position in life is inspiration enough for everyone in the world...!
