Don't get m wrong, I Personally lovee SRK-Kajol and DDLJ...But i wouldnt call it the bestt movie of all time..

But if you really think about it, Why was DDLJ such a huge blockbuster?
  1. It had 2 fairly new actors who were yet to carve a niche for them selves in the industry
  2. A brand new director
  3. A fairly fresh cast
  4. The same old Romantic story. boy loves girl, her baap gets involved
So what made DDLJ such a hugee hit, that its compared to movies such as Sholey and Mugleazam..It ran for over 500 hundred weeks. And Its still running, at 1 cinema in Mumbai...Its out of my comprehension..

Desis like love stories in our films. The scenic locales, songs, the casting, and the whole trend of being hindustani no matter how far you are way being started I guess do it. Do I think it deserves to be elevated in the same quality as the two films you just mentioned? No, but I like it, in the same way I would like QSQT.

I think the simplicity of the stor did it...like Sholay for example...on an analytical level Sholay too does not have much of a story...yet it worked with the people becoming the biggest blockbuster of Indian cinema
in DDLJ I think the way each character was portrayed was very beautiful...like SRK's role...such a chocolate boy with that badboy image but a heart of gold...that I guess must have clicked with the audience..
as for me I LOVE ddlj...everytime I watch it its so refreshing for me. but that's me i love love stories

DDLJ was a commercial movie that had a very good message for it's time...it was the time more than anything else. DDLJ looks very ordinary today since so many movies like that have been made till date. What makes DDLJ stand out is that it was the first movie of it's time where the boy and the girl actually tried to convince their parents before getting together in the end.

Most love stories had fathers who opposed and the kids eloped or something like that. DDLJ broke that rule. It told youngsters of that time that eloping is not the way to go. I think this was the main reason why this movie worked magic at that time and continues to make magic. This concept can never be jaded and it will always make sense. So even today especially to the youngsters of that time it stands out as one of the greatest coz it managed to break that "eloping" phenomenon...now kids try to at least talk to their parents before going ahead and getting married. I know my generation (the 70/80s babies) was def affected by it.

And when the first promo came out on TV...it looked soooo fresh and SRK & Kajol looked soooo good....it was like nothing we had seen before in Indian Cinema. The quality of the print was also outstanding for it's time...the styling of the movie was very classy and fresh for it's time. 1995 was the year for Manish Malhotra- he made Urmila (in Rangeela) and Kajol look amazingly gorgeous (Kajol wore a wig for the first time and put proper make-up on!) with his chic designs for it's time. Plus it was the first to target the NRI audience and the whole hindustani dil whereever u r clicked with ppl...no one said that before in any movie!!

"Badi Badi Desho mein aisi choti choti baatein hoti rehte hai"

That was our dialogue for everything in school!! LOL!!

DDLJ def stands right next to QSQT- QSQT broke the action age of the 80s where all the movies where abt revenge from a villain. It paved the way for romantic films but the eloping phenomenon continued. DDLJ went one step ahead and established that eloping was a cowardly act. These are not great cinema from a cinematic pt of view....but these are milestone and good cinemas that changed the course of Indian films.

In its time, it was something totally different. During that era action flicks were made more. Even though QSQT was a romantic flick, it still had the action part in it with the "khaandaan ki dushmani" and revenge kinda plot mixed in. DDLJ was devoid of all that, it was just a simple, very very basic love story. Not to mention, the songs were purely amazing, all of them.
I think the fresh faces also helped. SRK-Kajol were seen before but in action flicks, and SRK was getting popular and liked at that time with Baazigar, and I guess him being in a new avatar generated a curiosity as well. Now, ofcourse it seems ordinary because many films have been made on that storyline....but DDLJ was a first of its kind.
And I know people say Sholay was this amazing film and all, I've never seen it, so I don't know...but I'm assuming Sholay was just an action flick to which worked. So similarly, DDLJ to me is comparable in that sense...because, those kinda action flicks won't probably work in this era.

For me and i cannot say why its been running so long
1.memorable songs i mean even without seeing the film when i was younger i knew the songs...
2. Great cast ...characters were different mean no other character like raj :)
3. Simple story but orignal...it was way ahead of its time i think even now it does not look out of date compared to like when it was made. Not your usual lets run away against parents wishes story
4.I like the way NRI and values etc are presented in the film...even details like the house, business etc are not massive mansions like usually shown but everyday typical house
5. Good humour and dialouges which are memorable
crazy fanatic..sholay i know you have not seen its not just action its funny and good love story and humour in it in places basically everything!

Oh okay, I didn't know Sholay had humour etc in it too!
And, yeah, I agree with another point of yours. There were no big mansions, no crazy rich NRIs. SRK's character was rich but the image was never shown as larger than life. And ofcourse, the character Raj Malhotra itself is one of the finest male characters in Indian cinema. The most romantic one of all, for me.
