Bollywood box-office report of the week
The coming Friday will see action versus comedy as Apoorva Lakhia's Vivek, Zayed and Shreya Saran starrer MISSION ISTAANBUL takes on Ganesh Acharya's MONEY HAI TOH HONEY HAI, featuring Govinda, Manoj Bajpai and Hansika Motwani. While action does impress in certain areas, Govinda in a well made comedy is still a safer bet!
Last week saw a rather tame one sided battle as Aziz Mirza's Juhi Chawla, Shahid Kapoor and Vidya Balan starrer KISMAT KONNECTION dominated Ram Gopal Varma's CONTRACT from the word go. Though KISMAT KONNECTION is a slow movie, it still managed a very good opening in Bombay and by and large the opening was nice everywhere and even so in the smaller circuits. On the other hand, CONTRACT saw a poor opening day in Bombay and it was weak everywhere. Trade is not very upbeat on a big hit tag for KISMAT KONNECTION but a good success it will be. Afzal Khan's much delayed, Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan and Manisha Koirala starrer, MEHBOOBA is a poor show all the way, as the collections show. The film collected 45 lakhs (approx.) from Bombay, 12 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.30 lakhs from Rajkot, 1 lakh from Jamnagar and Sehore, 1.50 lakhs (gross) from Bhavnagar, !.40 lakhs from Solapur, 10 lakh from Delhi, 1.05 lakh from Noida, 1.60 lakh from Ghaziabad, 3.40 lakh from Lucknow, 1.40 lakh from Agra, 2.70 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.40 lakhs from Amravati and 6.15 lakhs from Jaipur. Netting just about 2.25 crores in its opening week from India, MEHBOOBA is an unmitigated disaster.
Aamir Khan and PVR Pictures' Abbas Tyrewala directed JAANE TU...YA JAANE NA is rock steady in its second week. The Imran'Genelia starrer is extraordinary in multiplexes. The film collected 3 crores from Bombay, 71.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.30 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 6.55 lakhs from Rajkot, 3.15 lakhs from Jamnagar, 2.40 lakhs (gross) from Bhavnagar, 1.15 lakhs from Adipur, 4.05 lakhs from Pune, 1.40 lakhs from Solapur, 11.75 lakhs from Nasik, 2.15 crores from Delhi, 30 lakhs from Noida, 9.60 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 23 lakhs from Lucknow, 2.75 lakhs from Agra, 2 lakhs from Bareilly, 5 lakhs from Aligarh, 46.55 lakhs from Gurgaon, 11.45 lakhs from Faridabad, 2 lakhs from Panipat, 69 lakhs from Calcutta, 3.75 lakhs from Guwahati, 33 lakhs from Nagpur, 3 lakhs from Jabalpur, 3.15 lakhs from Amravati, 1.75 lakhs from Akola, 3.35 lakhs from Raipur, 28 lakhs from Indore, 1.15 lakhs from Sehore, 6.10 lakhs from Bhopal, 1.10 lakhs from Dewas, 25.50 lakhs from Jaipur, 2.20 lakhs from Ajmer, 63.05 lakhs from Hyderabad and 4.05 lakhs from Aurangabad. With another 17 crores, JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA manages an exceptional 37.50 crores in two weeks from India. Even by the most strict trade classifications JT...YJN proves class AA in Bombay and A to A1 in others! The super-hit movie has also done well in the US grossing an impressive $539,857.
Harry Baweja's LOVE STORY 2050, starring Harman Baweja and Priyanka Chopra had a huge crash of well over 80 percent in its second week. The film collected 14 lakhs from Bombay, 4.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1 lakh from Rajkot, 1.25 lakhs from Jamnagar, 14 lakhs from Delhi, 2.15 lakhs from Noida, 1.45 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.25 lakhs from Agra, 2.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1 lakh from Faridabad, 2 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.10 lakhs from Indore, 4.30 lakhs from Jaipur and 7.50 lakhs from Hyderabad. During the week, LOVE STORY 2050 added another 1.75 crores and has thus netted 12.75 crores in two weeks. The film is a global trade disaster. Trade estimates that Adlabs have lost close to 20 crores with LOVE STORY 2050.
Yash Raj's joint production with director Kunal Kohli, THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC, continues to crash. The film collected 23.40 lakhs from Bombay, 4.65 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 19.15 lakhs from Delhi, 3.70 lakhs from Noida, 1.55 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Agra, 5.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2.15 lakhs from Faridabad and 3.80 lakhs from Hyderabad. With another 1.50 crores, THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC has netted 23 crores in three weeks from India. The Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerjee starrer is a worldwide flop for Yash Raj Films and also for the first time producer Kunal Kohli.
Our concluding report for week is about an older release, Shemaroo's MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP. The Priyadarshan directed Akshaye Khanna and Genelia D'Souza starrer has ended its run in India netting nearly 23 crores.
