Yash Raj's new project

Tuesday January 2 2007 11:43 IST
Yash Raj has signed Akshay Kumar for its forthcoming project, which will be directed by Dhoom and Dhoom 2 writer Vijay Krishna Acharya aka Victor. In fact, the project marks Akshay's return to Yash Raj after Dil To Pagal Hai.

However, there's tremendous speculation about the balance cast of this biggie. A section of the media has reported that the film will star Ajay Devgan with Akshay, but trustworthy sources tell us that Saif Ali Khan will be co-starring in the film.

Now, here is something no one knows. Kareena Kapoor will play the romantic interest of Akshay and Saif in this film. Like Akshay, this film marks Kareena's return to the Yash Raj banner after Mujhse Dosti Karoge.

Apparently, there were no differences between Kareena and Yash Raj as such. But the Kal Ho Na Ho incident with the Johars' created a rift and Kareena was never considered for any of Yash Raj or Dharmas' films.

Back to the Akki-Saif project. Kareena has already heard the story, liked her part immensely and has given her consent to the makers. The film will be shot from April to July 2007, after which Kareena will commence shooting for Mani Ratnam's Lajjo from October 2007 onwards.

Anil in the black market
Anil Kapoor returns to the Yashraj banner to play villain for the first time in his career

Subhash K Jha

Anil Kapoor is all set to return to the Yash Chopra's banner after 15 years to play his first villainous role. The casting of Yashraj Films next production Tashan (style) is to be directed by Victor.

Now, joining Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor as the film's arch-antagonist, is Anil Kapoor.

Confirming this news, Anil says, "Yes, it's true. Don't you love the title Tashan? It's such a youthful colloquial term. I remember I'd often use the term in my younger days to describe some accessory or some attitude. This is my first Yashraj Film in 15 years after Lamhe where I played a role that took me from a boy to a middle-aged man. And this time I play the villain. So it's quite an event for me."

It has been a while since Anil returned to one of his favourite banners. "I've always been choosy. My last film with Yashraj Films was very special to me and now this."

Tashan is going to be a daring step for the actor. "I've never been afraid of the unknown. I'll be as sincere as a bad man as I've been in my good roles. I'm not afraid to look unpleasant. In Salaam-E-Ishq I was required to dance in a ridiculous manner and make a fool of myself. I did it convincingly. Mainstream actors are often afraid to look less than heroic. Not me." In Nayak Anil had gone nude. "Not quite. I was wearing a body stocking," he grins.

Akki's girl

Says Bebo, "Even though it's Sunday, I am "working" (reading scripts)! Jokes apart, I'm in the process of finalising two films. If both work out, I will start shooting in March. One is a comedy while the other is a love story. I should know for sure within the week."

Kareena is also looking forward to Yash Raj Films' Tashan, directed by Victor, which is a love story.

"I am looking forward to working with Akshay Kumar after Aitraaz. Apart from the fact that we share good chemistry on-screen, Akshay is great fun to work with. I can talk about anything with him. Akshay and Ajay (Devgan) project a serious image, but in reality both are complete pranksters on location. I enjoy working with them the most."

Her co-star in Tashan is Saif Ali Khan, whom she briefly worked with in LOC and Omkara. Says Bebo, "We only had a few scenes together in LOC and Omkara, so I haven't really interacted with Saif on a personal level. But he has flourished so much as an actor. He was breathtaking in Omkara!"

Apache Indian talks on facing racism, his new album and Bollywood debut

He pitches serious issues plaguing the world on his new album, 'Sadhu - The Movement'. Steven Kapur aka Apache Indian, the reggae guru who gave us hits like 'Boomshackalak', rakes up the subject of racism which according him is very deep rooted in the UK.

"I started working on the album three years ago. I've used Hindi, Punjabi and international influences on it, and though title is 'Sadhu', it's not a religious or spiritual album. I have tried addressing serious issues," explains Apache who has shifted base to Goa.

Quiz him about the 'Big Brother' controversy where Shilpa Shetty was the target of racist remarks, and he admits, "It's a terrible show. She is very popular but she knows nothing about racism in the UK. It's a very big issue and has only grown into the system over the years due to terrorism, immigration and other reasons," states Apache who claims racism to be one of the prime reasons for his shifting base to India.

"The problem was much less when I was growing up in the eighties. My kids face racism every day," he says.

Apache's new project includes 'Sadhu Rasta Camp' which conducts dance classes, DJ classes and other music-related courses. Besides that, Apache will soon fly to South Africa to shoot for a Bollywood film with Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan

Yash Raj Films has announced the line-up of films and the respective release dates for the year 2007. And it is a line-up to behold. Reading like a virtual roll-call of the industry's biggest stars, the line-up heralds a year of tremendous excitement for cine lovers. What's more, the excitement will continue practically non-stop throughout the year with as many as five releases in 2007, with one closely following in January 2008.

The first Yash Raj release of 2007 comes up on 27th April: Siddharth Anand's TA RA RUM PUM, starring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji.

Barely two months after TA RA RUM PUM comes Shaad Ali's third directorial venture JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM, starring Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Bobby Deol, Lara Dutta and Amitabh Bachchan [sp. app.]. 15th June is the day of release.

Yash Raj's third release of the year, CHAK DE INDIA, is slated to hit the screens on 10th August. Directed by Shimit Amin, it stars Shah Rukh Khan in the lead.

The festive season will be celebrated in style by Yash Raj with the release of Pradeep Sarkar's LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG. The film will be unveiled on 12th October. It stars Jaya Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kunal Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan.

And finally, Yash Raj's last offering for 2007, slated for 30th November release, is AAJA NACHLE. Cinematographer Anil Mehta makes his directorial debut with this film which marks the comeback of Madhuri Dixit on the Hindi screen.

2008 will kick off in grand style with TASHAN. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya [the screenplay and dialogue writer of DHOOM and DHOOM 2], it stars Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Anil Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.

But 2007 will be memorable for Yash Raj Films for another reason. It will move completely to a studio style of functioning. With the one-of-its-kind YRF Studios fully operational, Yash Raj Films now has the capability of doing each and every bit of pre-production, production and post-production work in-house.

Scripting Bebo's exit?

Reportedly, Kareena Kapoor may not be part of Zoya Akhtar's Kismet Talkies any more. Did Hrithik Roshan ask his director to rework the entire script to ensure this?

Zoya Akhtar's debut venture Kismet Talkies seems to be in trouble all the time. Chances of the project starting soon seem bleaker now, with the buzz doing the rounds about Hrithik Roshan being unwilling to work with Kareena Kapoor. Not only that, Hrithik has also reportedly asked for the script to be reworked. And no, chances of Kareena featuring in the reworked version is very bleak.

In fact, Kareena has been heard asking whether Zoya plans to make the film at all, since she hasn't heard about it from her, in ages. She hasn't been shown the script yet either. What's more, Bebo's dates are blocked for the rest of the year with three films, so that may be an issue too.

Meanwhile, Zoya Akhtar reworked the first draft of the script to keep Hrithik happy, but to no avail. According to our source, "Somehow Hrithik was not convinced still, and asked her to postpone the project." Zoya, eager to salvage her forthcoming film, continued to ideate. "Hrithik will work with Zoya for sure. He has signed a contract with producer Ritesh Sidwani and Farhan Akhtar under the banner of Excel Entertainment. Moreover, Zoya is a friend," says our source.

Once upon a time...: Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor in K3G
When we contacted Zoya Akhtar, she said, "I don't want to talk about my project at the moment, I think it's too premature to talk about it now."

However, industry insiders insist that Hrithik has been hesitant about the film ever since Zoya signed Kareena for the project. His wife Suzanne, sources say, is not too happy with husband Hrithik teaming up with Kareena. A few years ago, it was reported in the media that Hrithik had an affair with Kareena, during the making of K3G. Although both of them deny it, they have never worked together after that.

Even after the two signed Kismet Talkies, the cold vibes persisted. In an earlier interview to Mumbai Mirror, Hrithik clearly stated that, "I am doing Zoya's film. I don't know who else is associated with the project." Kareena remained indifferent too. She told Mumbai Mirror, "I liked my character in the film very much. I have never signed any film because of the hero. I am happy that Hrithik is doing the film, but I would have done the film even if he hadn't been associated with the film."

Just when Zoya thought she had managed to convince Hrithik, things took a turn for the worse and now Kareena may not do the film. "Kareena has no formal intimation from Zoya yet, but she doesn't know whether she's in the film or not any more. In fact, Hrithik has recommended Priyanka Chopra's name for the film," our source reveals.

We tried to get in touch with Hrithik Roshan for his version but his publicist refused to give us his new number.

I will definitely marry Shahid: Kareena Kapoor

Subhash K Jha Catches Kareena Kapoor In An Ebullient Mood.

You turned 17 this year…
Ha ha. Why not Sweet 16? Seriously, I'm 26. I think I've done well for myself. I don't know what more I want from my life and career. I've got love and I now I look forward to doing some great films.

Both professionally and personally I'm at peace with myself. Now I want to go with the flow. Things are going great. In December I start preparing for Mani Rathnam's Lajjo.

What preparations?
There will be Urdu classes and lots of dance rehearsals. I've to change my hair. I'm restructuring my body because Indian clothes require a different physicality.

You're slim enough.
I know. But I constantly feel the need to grow thinner. I've always been healthy, touch wood. I'm a foodie. But I burn it up. If I eat I work-out vigorously. I'll be working out intensely from the next month for Lajjo. I'm really looking forward to working with Aamir Khan. I don't know how I'll give my shots.

What do you mean?
I'm so much in awe of him. Just watching him at work would be a learning experience. I absolutely love him. I know him since the time he worked with my sister in Andaz Apna Apna and Raja Hindustani. I'm an Aamir Khan fan.

I'm that wide-eyed kid who has watched all his films, read all his interviews and followed all his films. I bought tickets and saw Rang De Basanti six times. Each time I had a blast. When they gave him a standing ovation I also stood up.

What about another film with Shahid?
We've taken a mutual decision not to work together until we're offered something truly outstanding. It must be an out-and-out love story. He's one of our youngest leading men. Youth is on his side.Coincidentally Shahid too has taken a break from acting. I'm not exaggerating when I say he hears four scripts a day.

But nothing excites him. I'm glad he has reached a stage where he can say no. I wish I had done that before. He's such a fine actor. I'm so happy he has decided to stop work until he' challenged by a script.

Are you saying the two of you didn't plan this time off together?
No. It just happened. Shahid is a thinking guy. So far he has done a lot of films he wasn't convinced by. When I did the same I defiantly shrugged it off. But bad films trouble Shahid. So now he's putting his foot down. Good for him. He won't do any film for money.

What about you?
Not at all. It's the script. I've realized the script is the real star. That's why I love Omkara. I think I did well for myself. For me Desdemona's role is the ultimate. Why just me, everyone in the film was fabulous. I think Omkara is one of this year's best films. No director except Vishal could've the guts to do it.

Last year you won the Smita Patil Memorial Award.
I was shocked! I was away in Vienna when my sister received a letter from them. When she called to say I had won this award. I guess all my hard work and all my agonizing—am I doing the right thing or not?-- is finally paying off.

I've always admired Smita Patil and to have my name associated with her at such a young age… I don't think I could've asked for me. I'm really excited. I'll be getting the award on 19 September two days before my birthday. A great gift.

How closely have you watched Smita?
I think she was so wonderful in Arth. She had a thankless unsympathetic role as the Other Woman. And she held her own against someone as powerful as Shabana Azmi. I wish I could play that role. I also like Smita in Bazaar. I'm partial to Bazaar because Supriya Aunty (Shahid's step-mother Supriya Pathak) is in it. She's one lovely actress who never got her due. She gave up her opportunities for her kids.

Just like your mom?
No no. My mom has a rocking life. Lots of friends, she travels, goes out to lunch. Plus my niece Samaira is there. So there's no time for her to be lonely.

Were you happy with the response you got for Omkara?
For sure. Mani Rathnam's Lajjo happened to me after Omkara. I won't be shooting for the next three months, just travelling to one unexplored land with Shahid every month. Spending my time with friends whom I've ignored because of work, gyming…The pressure of getting up for a 9 am shift for work that didn't excite me, is over.

I won't say yes to a film I don't like. I'm looking for the right scripts. I fall asleep hearing the scripts about people cracking stupid jokes and shedding artifical tears. I can't be excited by the boy-meets-girl stories. Will someone gift me an exciting script ?

What special thing will you do during your holiday?
I wish I could boast about doing a course in cinematography or learning a new language during my holiday. I am not the pseudo-intellectual type. I'll be watching Hindi movies and travelling. Next month Shahid and I travel to Thailand. I love travelling.

Does Shahid like to travel?
He loves to go to new places. But he's terrified of flying. That's the problem.

That's okay, you can hold his hand.
Nah. I'm too busy eating and watching movies. I LOVE flying. To me every destination is just a flight away. If I decide to visit a place I'll just fly off overnight.

What is Karisma planning to do?
As of now she's just planning to look after her baby. She wants to be there for Samaira watching her grow. Samaira is very little. She needs her mother. Karisma was offered a tv show. But she decided she wanted to stay home. She might come back to cinema. But only for a great role.

No one has offered the two of you a role together?
We'd love to work together. But it has to be great role for both of us.

Okay I'll write it. But no money.
Okay no money. Just write it.

Where will you be on your birthday?
Ideally I'd like to be in Goa. That's my favourite holiday spot in India. I did want us to go to Thailand for my birthday. But I can't go because of the Smita Patil award. So we'll be in Goa. We've decided to visit one new place every month. This month it's Goa, next month it's Thailand. Who knows where we'll be in November?

And marriage?
Not for the next four years for sure. I'll most definitely marry Shahid. I'm not the kind to jump from one relationship to another. For me love is for keeps.

Kareena now Chamki Chameli

Chamki Chameli has everything in place. The director Shyam Benegal is all set to collaborate with his Zubeida team of music composer A R Rahman and lyricist Javed Akhtar in what promises to be the first fully-fledged musical spectacle since Chetan Anand's Heer Ranjha where Javed's father-in-law Kaifi Azmi had written every dialogue in verse.

Vaibhavi Merchant is supposed to choreograph Chamki in the desi big-screen adaptation of the Spanish opera.

Sanjay Gupta says that one of the names at the top of Sanjay's list for the female lead is Kareena Kapoor, who incidentally was also the first choice for the Chamki Chameli at a time when Benegal was to make the film for another producer.

But when the project exchanged hands and went to Gupta, many other leading ladies were considered. Finally, Chamki Chameli may go to Kareena again.

Kareena is shooting for Mani Ratnam's film in the same location, Kareena does seem the right candidate to play the lead in the newest adaptation of Bizet's Opera about a passionate soldier and a fey capricious gypsy woman, which is now trans-located to Rajasthan.

Even the dates for the two films may clash.

Kareena is certainly open to the idea. She says, "Why not? I'm looking at challenging roles now. Carmen sounds so exciting. And it had come to me originally. Besides I've never worked with Sanjay Dutt. I'd love to be paired with Sanjay Dutt. He's the ultimate looker."

Bebo loves Prison Break!By: Upala KBR
March 13, 2007
------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------

Kareena Kapoor and her beau Shahid have been glued to their TV set for the last few months.

The couple has been manically watching DVDs of the American TV show, Prison Break. Kareena, who is currently shooting an item song for Lovely Singh's Kya Love Story Hai, says, "Prison Break has rocked my world. It's simply awesome."

Hooked!

She says Shahid and her got hooked on to the show thanks to sister, Karisma. "I started watching it on DVD because of Lolo. She has a huge collection of DVDs, including TV shows like Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and other American shows. Lolo is quite passionate about wat-ching them.

Whatever shows don't air here she buys DVDs of them. I started watching Prison Break last year when I was on a break from work. I was doing nothing so I put on one episode and the rest, as they say, is history!"

Kareena says that Shahid and she are so hooked that they carry their DVDs with them where ever they travel.

"Last year, we went for a show in Bali and landed at 8 pm. We reached the hotel at 9.30 pm and switched on the DVD player and watched till 6.30 am! We were that hooked!"

Run baby, run!

What Kareena finds exciting about the show is that, "It's emotional and heart-wrenching but also a fast-paced thriller.

It's the story of two brothers who have been framed for murder and how the younger brother breaks into the prison to save his elder brother. The rest of the story is about how they are on the run."

Would she act in a TV serial like that if it were to be made in India? "No, but I would want someone to make a film on it," says Kareena, before leaving to shoot for her song, Jab jab dil se teri in Kya Love Story Hai.

After wrapping up the shoot, she leaves to start shooting for Imtiaz Ali's next film with Shahid in Patiala and then Yash Raj's Tashan with Akshay Kumar. "This year, I have no time for breaks," says Bebo.

What's Prison Break?

Convinced that his wayward brother Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) was wrongly convicted of the sensational murder of the Vice President's brother (which landed him on Fox River State Penitentiary's death row), a desperate Michael Scofield masterminds an elaborate plan to free Lincoln by pulling off the ultimate Prison Break.

Aided by an intricate tattoo of the prison's blueprints covering his upper body, Michael aligns himself with various people and begins his quest for the truth. The brothers and six other inmates ultimately escaped from Fox River.

Outside the prison walls, the escape truly begins as the convicts race for their lives and the hidden cash — while trying to avoid being captured by the authorities.

The pursuers are led by vengeful prison guard Captain Brad Bellick (Wade Williams) who will stop at nothing until the escapees are captured or killed.

Salman opts out of Boney Kapoor's 'Milenge Milenge'

The Shahid-Kareena starrer "Milenge Milenge", produced by Boney Kapoor, has landed in trouble since Salman Khan refused to do the film after being irked by the lead couple's behaviour.

Directed by Satish Kaushik, the movie has been in the making for nearly two years.

Salman was to do an extended 12-day cameo guest appearance in "Milenge Milenge", not just because of his rapport with the its producer Boney Kapoor but also for Satish with whom Salman collaborated in the memorable film "Tere Naam".

Even the dates on which Salman was supposed to shoot for Boney's film had been roughly worked out. But when he returned from the Rock Stars concerts with Shahid and Kareena, he flatly refused to give the dates and politely told Boney he won't be doing it.

When asked, Boney had no explanation to offer about Salman's move.

"I've no clue why Salman decided not to do 'Milenge Milenge' any longer. I needed him for a very important cameo and he had happily agreed to do it after the world concerts. When he returned from the concerts, he said he won't do it. I was baffled. But I didn't probe," Boney told IANS.

Apparently Salman is Boney's lucky mascot. The actor bailed the distressed producer out by doing an extended guest appearance in "No Entry".

"I love and respect Salman too much to question him. I remember how warm hearted he was during 'No Entry'. He was, and will remain one person who will always be there for me even at 2 a.m. if I need help. Something must have happened during the concerts to make him change his mind. Salman is not someone to back out of any commitment without provocation," he added.

A member of the Rock Stars team has a valid explanation.

"Salman felt snubbed by Shahid and Kareena. While the other singletons in the troupe sucked up to him, poured wine into his glass and laughed at his jokes, Shahid and Kareena spent all their free time together. It really hurt Salman's ego. He felt they were deliberately ignoring him. Being emotional by nature, Salman withdrew from the first thing that could affect the pair - namely their pending film."

Whatever the reason, the fact remains that "Milenge Milenge" continues to be stuck until Salman decides to bail out the troubled project.
