Bollywood stars get seriously fashionable

By Priyanka Khanna, Indo-Asian News Service

New Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS) Signature line of clothing that are inspired, crafted and fine-tuned by film stars themselves is the hottest new trend in the world of fashion.
< =text/> < src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js" =text/>

Jennifer Lopez has it and so do Sarah Jessica Parker, Eminem, Britney Spears and loads of other international celebrities, so why should Indian film stars be far behind.

Not content with merely endorsing clothes brands or gracing the opening of clothes stores, hot and happening Bollywood stars are increasingly getting involved with fashion wear at the sketching stage itself.

John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan lead the list when it comes to adding a very personal touch and bringing out signature fashion collections. While John has tied-up with Wrangler, Hrithik is working very closely with ITC in a bid to find a way into your wardrobes.

John's involvement with his own line needs to be seen to believed. Each piece of his collection comes with small notes sticking out from the inside pockets containing personal comments from the actor himself on the design, style and how he came up with the look.

Like John, Hrithik's association with ITC's John Player began as a brand endorsement but has taken a personal turn.

Atul Chand of ITC said in an interview: 'The association benefits both. It brings alive the personality of the brand and helps establish a style statement for the star or a specific character the actor is trying to popularise.'

Apart from the above two, actor Fardeen Khan, after severing ties as brand ambassador for clothes brand Provogue, is set to launch his own line. Model-actor Milind Soman is even working with designer Madhu Jain to revive handicraft in Kashmir.

The stunning Malaika Arora of 'Chaiyya chaiyya' fame has been turning down lucrative offers to sign up as brand ambassador by the dozen. She wants to bring out her own clothing line that will be an extension of her identity.

The linkage between film stars and fashion goes way back. In a nation where film stars are often equated with god, the kings and queens of celluloid have known to influence millions of people who try to think, dress, walk and even talk like them.

There were times when an entire generation of girls would style their hair in line with the hair-do of the leading female actors.

Young boys would ape clothes and even mannerisms of leading actors. Mothers of girls getting married would take posters of films to their tailors for getting wedding trousseaus made.

But at the same time some of the clothes that actors wore were so outlandish that even the most ardent fan would never follow suit. The thought that film stars could get into the clothing industry was once inconceivable.

'Today more than ever before fashion and showbiz go hand-in-hand,' says model-actor Samita Bangargi who launched her Fall Winter collection some four months ago.

Samita got involved in the clothes business after she was asked by a jeans brand to design for them. She was quick to recognise the potential in the trade and launched her own brand.

Given the increasing importance of revenue from brand placement in films and merchandising, the synergy between stars and fashion is set to increase many folds.

According to reports, in 2006 brand cameos earned around Rs.800 million and as a result, even small- and medium-budget movies as well as animated films can hope to cash in.

The figure is projected to climb to Rs.2 billion this year and reach Rs.8 billion in 2010.

Last year, Farhan Akhtar's 'Don' tied-up with international men's wear brand Louis Philippe, besides others like Tag Heuer watches, Motorola, Garnier, Citibank and Oakley sunglasses. The long list of brands piggyback riding on 'Krrish' included ITC's John Players.

Siddharth Roy Kapoor, senior vice-president, UTV, says that while branding does not contribute significantly to revenues yet, it has enormous potential.

'After 2006's success story, more FMCG brands and durables have woken up to the power of movies as a means to push their products. Companies are increasingly opting for joint promotions.'

For UTV's upcoming film 'Goal', Reebok worked closely with the film's costume designer to create outfits for the cast.

Besides helping to promote the movie with a media campaign, Reebok would also highlight its association with the movie.

As Bollywood is turning from gratuitous dance scenes and melodramatic romance to gritty storylines, actors are sporting more realistic looks. The men especially are experimenting with their on-screen look like never before.

Though our actors are yet to go in for drastic moves like Charlize Theron did in award-winning film 'Monster', but at least some are going the extra mile to look the part.

Aamir Khan leads the pack with his drive for perfection. Recently, he grew a moustache and gained weight for his title role in 'Mangal Pandey' and then he lost the kilos to play a college boy in 'Rang De Basanti'.

After stunning audiences with dramatically different looks in 'Krrish' and 'Dhoom 2', Hrithik is now growing a beard for the period look needed for Ashutosh Gowarikar's 'Akbar-Jodha'.

Even Abhishek Bachchan has been growing his hair for 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' and 'Drona'. No more fake wigs and beards for these guys.

John broke down every time...

By: Reshma Kelkar, IndiaFM
Thursday, February 22, 2007

Nagesh Kukunoor's first film with a star-value celebrity in the cast was to happen with Aashayein where he had cast John Abraham as the main lead. The film being produced by the Percept Picture Company was formally announced on Tuesday evening in the presence of Nagesh Kukunoor, John Abraham and Shailendra Singh, the CEO of Percept Picture Company.

Nagesh sounded quite positive about the project. "Aashayein has always been my dream project and I am extremely excited to do this film. The word Aashayein means hope. It is one of those words that struck in my mind during Iqbal. (Aashayein was the theme song from Iqbal). There are lots of up and downs in the film but eventually while watching the film you'll understand how the title is so apt".

Interestingly John had a narration of Aashayein on phone and he agreed to do it there and then itself. "Nagesh narrated the story idea to me some time back on phone itself while I was in LA promoting Water. I loved his concept so much that I agreed to do the film there and then itself. In fact I was so excited about this film that I told Nagesh if we could start this movie early. But he had some other prior commitments. So this will be my next project after Goal."

On the outer surface John is brawny but from inside he is equally emotional at heart. "I love subjects that touch my heart. Aashayein is one of them. I read the script of Aashayein five times and broke down every time after reading it. I have seen Nagesh's earlier works and would like to work with him on a great project like this"

Ask him on his character in the film and John says, "I am playing a gambler in this movie". So what's his biggest gamble in life been? "I think getting into films was the biggest gamble of my life because I did not plan that", he reverts instantly. "I was a model and I wanted to be a good model. But when I got into films, I think I was the biggest gamble for all the producers who cast me in their film."

So how come John came into the cast of this film? Nagesh has an answer, "When I thought of this character I gambled on John. When I spoke to him about the film I knew that he had done Water but I hadn't seen it. I saw Water after Kabul Express and was happy that my gamble had paid off. After seeing his performance in Water I am excited to work with him all the more. So it's a gamble that has paid off handsomely".

Explaining on the theme of his film, Nagesh adds, "Gambling is a metaphor for life. We all gamble for something or the other. Aashayien is more about gambling on life rather that hopes. The film centers on John and there are some characters that support him. We are in the process of finalizing others in the star cast".

And wasn't John a little apprehensive about doing a small film? John doesn't believe in big or small movies and one thing that matters to him is subject. "You see there were many big projects that bombed on box office but there were many small films with bigger ideas that worked. I think Aashayein has a big idea."

While this was about his movie, John is currently all geared up for the Oscars. There has been a little change in his looks as well. "I have trimmed my hair a bit as I have to look a little neat. I'll be wearing something very Indian like Achkan. It's a black tie affair so I have also got a black suit designed by Narendra Kumar Ahmed and Rocky S for the two events i.e. Oscar and the Governor's event. I don't really concentrate on dressing because I dress very simply. I am a white T-shirt blue jeans guy.

John strips his way to Hollywood

Courtesy: IndiaFM
Friday, February 23, 2007

John Abraham's stint in Water seems to have done him good; even better must have been the fact that his film is in the running for Oscar. For, John has loosened up considerably, what with his plans to go walking on the red carpet at the Academy Awards.

Now, possibly not content with attending the Oscar ceremony, John is contemplating to move to Hollywood. One way that John has opted for , to show that he is ready for Hollywood , is by stripping down to his birthday suit !

Apparently , he has done a nude scene in No Smoking !

Obviously the title says 'no' only to ciggerette smoking , and not the ladies audience that will be emitting steam when John will appear on screen for the above mentioned shot !

John not taking Bips for Oscar

By Subhash K Jha

Deepa Mehta is as wound up as a Japanese doll. "Just two more days to go! John is on the way although his mother had pneumonia. Right now I'm only concentrating on the accessories for my sari for the Oscars night."

Deepa and her daughter Devyani are both donning Saris. "I'll be wearing my mother's pure-gold tissue-silk sari woven in Varanasi around 70 years ago. My mom has a gorgeous collection of saris which my dad's mother gave her. Who wants to wear a designer sari when I've my mother's treasured clothes at my disposal?

I'm trying to convince Lisa Ray to wear a sari too. I hope she does. But my daughter Devyani will also be wearing a sari. Why shouldn't we proudly wear our own clothes? Why should we get into dresses and compete with the Nicole Kidmans of Hollywood? It's very important for us to be proud of our Indian heritage"

About her whirlwind visit to Delhi and Mumbai promoting Water before its Indian release Deepa says, "I wanted to let my people know that I'm not scared of a fundmanetalist backlash any longer and that I'm very proud of the film."

After the Oscars Deepa Mehta takes time to complete the script of Exclusion. "I'll be going to my farm near Toronto to write the script. The images are already in place. I want to take the whole of March off to write."

As for the Oscar, "We've done all we could for Water. Now let's see what happens. This year the competition in the foreign-film category is really very tough. I agree our product is damn good. And even if we don't win the Oscar it's been a long long time since somebody walked the red carpet at the Oscars nite in a sari."

John cuts his hair Bipasha loves it!
He's finally done it. Apart from making it to the red carpet at the 2007 Academy Awards, Water star John Abraham also snipped off his trademark long tresses for a shorter crop courtesy ace stylist Sapna Bhavnani.

Says Sapna, "I've been coaxing John into cutting his hair for the last two months. This is the look he will be sporting for Goal, where he plays a football player.

He wanted to keep his long hair for the role, but I kept telling him it wouldn't look nice. Finally, he relented!"

John's good friend and designer Rocky S also chipped in with tips on his new look. "He cut his hair a few days before he left for Los Angeles for the Oscars.

He didn't want people to discover his new look, so he always wore a cap in public. He wanted to unveil his new look on the Oscar red carpet, and I'm glad the entire world has got a glimpse of it now," she says.

Interestingly, Bipasha wasn't in town when John got his hair cropped. "She was in for a total surprise.

She hadn't seen the new look until I showed her John's pictures. I had taken a couple of snaps of John during the cutting process and showed them to Bipasha. She loved the look."

When asked if it was an emotional moment for John to let go of his hair, she says, "Not really! He was very chilled out about the entire exercise.

In fact, now all these John Abraham wannabes who grew their hair long will be rushing to parlours to chop them off! There can only be one John Abraham, so it's sad when people try to ape his style."

Rocky S, who is in Paris at the moment, tells us about the black achkan he designed for John. "It's a traditional achkan with a Western touch.

I think John carried it off really well on the red carpet," he says. John left for London after the Oscar's bash to join the cast and crew of Goal.

Bebo: John is expressionless!

pretty petty: Kareena Kapoor
ain't she picky! John Abraham

Kareena Kapoor made her dislike for John Abraham more than apparent on Sunday's episode of Koffee with Karan, calling the one actor she wouldn't want to work with, 'expressionless'.

But we're honestly thinking the young actress is being a tad too petty with apna Johnny boy.

Apparently, she didn't take too kindly to John picking Rani Mukerji over her as the better actress in last season's KwK, hence the serious misgivings.

But you know, it could also have to do with the fact that Johnny boy's main squeeze Bipasha Basu and Bebo are not exactly on the best of terms (remember the cat-fights they would indulge in on the sets of Ajnabee, and the reams of venomous interviews after?).

Oh, these B-Town boys and belles sure know how to keep the one-upmanship fires burning, no
