Priyanka is hot favourite on KBC

Mumbai, April 20 (IANS) Almost 90 percent of the men who occupied the hot seat opposite Shah Rukh Khan in 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' (KBC) had one dream. They all wanted to take Priyanka Chopra on a holiday.

The actress giggles at the observation.

'I'm aware of this. It's very sweet. In fact, when I shot for KBC this was mentioned to me. I'm told men on KBC want to take me anywhere, from a restaurant to the moon,' Priyanka told IANS.

During Amitabh Bachchan's tenure on KBC, it was Aishwarya Rai who seemed to occupy the maximum male attention.

Priyanka, who appeared on the grand finale episode of the show on STAR Plus Thursday, ponders on that one. 'Oh, really? I hope I don't get married next year.' She laughs.

'But seriously, I like being popular. That's what we work towards. I've been here for three-four years. I've long way to go. Considering, I don't have a godfather in the industry, I feel doubly gratified when people appreciate me.'

Priyanka, who was one of the judges on the recently held Femina India Miss India contest, says it was an emotional moment for her.

'It made me so nostalgic. I remembered my own walk on the ramp. I knew exactly what the girls were going through. It was tough. I kept telling the other judges to get it right because it could make or break lives.'

She says life since the crowning has been tough.

'The walk from the ramp to the screen hasn't been easy for me. So far the journey has been worth the while. To keep one's head on the shoulder and one's family by one's side is very important. I'd be nowhere without my family.'

She has more reason to get nostalgic.

''Big Brother' is the first film I shot for. But miraculously we completed most of the film in the last six months. So it's as fresh as a daisy. I haven't done a film like this. And my co-star Sunny Deol will always remain special.

'I'm still very nervous of him. I still can't look him in the eyes. There's so much respect for him when he walks into a room. It's easy to get enamoured of his personality.'

Priyanka remembers her initial gawkiness.

'I didn't know where to stand, which way the camera was facing. Today, I'm far more confident. I'm learning. I go to my set everyday like school.'

She admits 'Big Brother' is a hero-centric film.

'So were 'Krrish' and 'Don'. I think it's important to be part of successful films. Once I stand on my own, I can do heroine-centric films. Right now, I'm trying to do box-office compatible films. I'm not ready to shoulder a film yet. I leave it to Sunny's strong, sturdy shoulders.'

Priyanka won't sign a new film until it excites her.

'Till then I've my ads and stage shows. And I'll take that holiday which I've never taken in my life.'

Curtains for KBC 3 - and quizmaster SRK gets top billing

New Delhi, April 20 (IANS) Superstar Shah Rukh Khan signed off the first season of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' with his characteristic flourish in a special two-and-a-half hour show with Bollywood stars Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif who took home Rs.1 crore.

The grand finale Thursday night was long, but had viewers hooked as Priyanka-Kareena came on first followed by Salman-Katrina, the first time the much talked about couple has opened up about their relationship.

The star of the evening was, however, the irrepressible Salman Khan who brought the house down with his antics.

When launched on Jan 22, the initial response to the show was lukewarm. Comparisons with the original host Amitabh Bachchan were inevitable. And everybody, from the media and the viewers to critics and fans, dissected the minutiae of each action, nuance and gesture that Shah Rukh made.

But soon the comparisons stopped and people started enjoying the show. From Monday to Thursday, it became a kind of stress buster, generating energy and fun thanks to its charming host. SRK managed to give the otherwise serious quiz show a makeover with his witticisms and warmth.

When the show completed two weeks, the television audience measuring body (TAM) report showed the show had had a decent start.

KBC 3 opened with TRPs of 12.33 on Monday, came down to 10.44 on the second day and dipped to 7.36 on day three. By Thursday, the TRP graph had moved up to 9.24.

Expectations hadn't been high to begin with because the introduction of CAS had affected the overall TRPs of almost all television programmes.

The first season of KBC had started with 20 plus ratings - and the entire blame was put on Shah Rukh.

But King Khan remained unnerved. He kept innovating - giving away watches, offering a thinking cap, warmly hugging contestants. It all worked in his favour. Those who had initially rebuffed the show started returning to it and the ratings picked up.

'Khan ka gyan' gradually took over from Bachchanisms. Flying kisses replaced warm handshakes, 'kuchha kuchha-pucca-pucca' and 'computerda/bhai/anna' became the new buzzwords.

The OMS-Hansa Research survey revealed that 69 percent people liked the way Shah Rukh conducted the show.

'My friends and I returned to the quiz show after being initially put off by Shah Rukh, whom we constantly compared with Amitabh,' said Kunal Pandey, a Delhi-based executive.

He brought in celebrities like Arbaaz Khan, Malaika Arora, Karan Johar, Farah Khan, Farhan and Zoya Akhtar, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji, Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani, adding glitter to the already glamorised show.

Later he presented some of the participants with cricket bats and just a few weeks back actually gave away nine cars to the nine participants of the 'fastest finger first' contest.

'It might sound a little material, that I keep giving away watches, cricket bats during the World Cup season, and whatever I can get hold of in terms of what is special to me. But I think the car idea is not very original. There is someone else who has done it before?

'Yes, Oprah Winfrey. She had given away cars to the audience. If I could afford it, I would actually give away Rs.20 million to everyone,' Shah Rukh was quoted as saying in an interview.

Shah Rukh's only grudge was that nobody could win Rs.20 million (Rs 2 crores). In the last season too, which came to an abrupt end due to Amitabh's illness, none of the contestants were able to bag the big prize money.

Shah Rukh has promised to keep in touch with his fans through blogs and messages.

He said: 'I'll be honest and say maybe not with the frequency I have been right now - but say once a month or so I'll definitely be on. Because once I move on from KBC I have to go and finish some of the work I'm doing just now on my film.'

When Shah Rukh returns, he might not have to struggle to get the attention. People may start missing the daily dose of humour and fun.

Asked about the guest list at the Abhishek-Aishwarya marriage, Singh said marriage was a personal affair and too much was being read into the guest list.

To a query that Bollywood 'King' Shahrukh Khan was not being invited, he said it does not mean that those who have not been invited are enemies.

"As far as Shahrukh is concerned, even i have got very friendly and positive feelings for him. I have never taken a dig against Shahrukh," he said.

SRK's mehfil on Thursday overshadowed Abhiash's mehndi party

AFSANA AHMED Times News Network

You gotta hand it to Shah Rukh Khan. Even as Amitabh Bachchan's bungalow Jalsa in JVPD was alive with the Abhiash mehndi party on Thursday night, the Bollywood Badshah pulled off his own rocking mehfil on the final KBC episode. And unlike the Bachchans, whose function was a highly guarded affair, SRK did it in style and with the Indian aam junta as his viewers.

In a coup of sorts, SRK got star buddies Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor as the guests on his show. Incidentally, these stars were not invited to the Abhiash wedding.

The two-hour programme, with high drama, some nailbitingly stressful moments and loads of laughter, saw SRK and Sallu at their fizziest and funniest. There were also some candid moments between Sallu and Kat, plenty of giveand-take with Priyanka and Kareena, and SRK's undeniable charm. It was enough to keep the viewers glued to their seats and forget the Abhiash wedding for sometime.

"If Amitabh Bachchan sher hai toh Shah Rukh kya kam hai," said a maidservant after watching the show. Even though there is no comparison of the two occasion, this sentiment echoed everywhere, right from households to local trains. "It was too good. Salman's adorable antics and SRK's charm floored us," said Asha Josephs, a researcher in a firm.

SRK's getting the media shy Salman on the show along with girlfriend Katrina, was something that will be remembered. And whoever thought there was any cold war between 'Piggy Chops' and 'Bebo', will have to take back their words. The camaraderie between the two pretty ladies, specially when SRK took their cases, was hilarious.

There wasn't any trace too of the previous spat that happened between Sallu and SRK when the former was seeing Aishwarya Rai while she was working on SRK's home production. Also, Thursday's show publicly sealed the Sallu-Kat romance. Both the participants, won above fifty lakhs and donated it to charities. But for viewers everywhere, it was paisa vasool and a diversion from the Abhiash wedding that dominated the news almost all this week.

Yuvika Chaudhary gears for her debut

Monday, March 05, 2007

Yuvika Choudhary is one lucky girl. The former Zee Cine stars ki khoj contestant, seen in various commercials, the Zee serial Astitva, a music video with Himesh Reshammiya and a Telegu film, has recently made it to the Bollywood big league. She has been signed by none other than Farah Khan to star in her next biggie Om Shanti Om, alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Arjun Rampal and the very promising supermodel turned actress Deepika Padukone.

"Farah told me that she had watched me right from the start of Zee Cinestars Ki Khoj and loved me throughout. Then she saw me in the Coke ad with Kunal Kapoor. It was kind of shocking to get a call from her. She asked me whether I would like to be in the movies and that she has a role for me. There was no audition", reveals the perky youngster. She can't contain her excitement. "At the moment I am so happy, I can't even explain the feeling. It was such a pleasant surprise", she says.

She admits the story of the big budget film has been kept under tight wraps. "I can't reveal much about the role and the story, not until I start shooting. I can just say that I am playing a young girl", states the cherubic looking girl.

So has she met producer Shah Rukh and the rest of the cast members? "Yes, I went and met Shah Rukh. It was obviously a heady feeling. I know Deepika from before because of the modelling connection. I met the rest after the shoot started last month...It's been great", reveals Yuvika. How are the preparations like? "I think I should start preparing now. I am very regular with my workouts. But I am not doing dance classes. It is sure that there is going to be a lot of song and dance. I guess I will do some serious homework now", she laughs. Her life is completely focused on this film at the moment. She shies away from talking about the tiffs between her and her seniors (including Niki Aneja) in Astitva, that were widely highlighted. It was even said that she quit Astitva because of these issues.

"I would let bygones be bygones. If they spoke out their mind and thought me to be something, let it be. I didn't want to waste my name in fighting and giving clarifications. I would rather concentrate on and let my work speak. If I said then, that I wanted to do films, I was serious. Now everyone knows that I meant what I said", she says candidly.

Undoubtedly the girl is sure of herself. "My parents are very happy but they are not bragging me or something. I want to give this film my best shot. Even My South films are postponed because of this project.I believe it's going to be a super duper hit. I want to do good work in the film. My positive attitude towards life has stood by me and I hope it will do so later too", she signs off. Indeed it has, and it is likely to achieve more for her in the future.

Apollo Circus still banking on King Khan to bring in the crowds

Ludhiana, April 18: A good 20 years after the telecast of the serial Circus on Doordarshan, Apollo Circus is still banking on Shah Rukh Khan's name to lure audiences.

The circus's posters declare with pride "Shah Rukh Khan wala Apollo Circus".

Circus manager R K Yadav said with nostalgia, "Shah Rukh Khan worked with us during our peak years. We were among the prime entertainers of the country. We do miss those days. It was our golden era, when people waited for the circus to come to their city or town."

Madan, a trainer, is the only artiste left in the circus who has acted with SRK and still remembers that time.

"We had a great time on the sets with him. Both Khan saheb and director Aziz Mirza were very down-to-earth and good natured," he smiled.

"The year was 1991. The shooting went on for 14 months and our revenue went up amazingly."

Those days seem to have been the highpoint of Madan's life.

"When he was not busy shooting, Shah Rukh ji enjoyed playing volleyball with us. In fact, the scenes in the serial were all real performances with a real audience. We performed in Goa at that time," he added.

Madan was all praises for SRK. "Though it has been over 20 years, whenever we go to Mumbai, he still comes to meet us. Despite being a superstar, he has not changed as a person."

Yadav lamented that people did not find the circus appealing any more.

"Serials like Circus and movies like Mera Naam Joker or Haathi Mere Saathi gave our revenue a big boost. Now, the circus has been sidelined as a medium of entertainment," he said.
