Rahul Roy: A man who holds no grudges
Rahul Roy is one of the few people to have emerged from Bollywood's unforgiving oblivion. But now having won Bigg Boss, the future is wide open for Mr Aashiqui. In this interview, Rahul speaks about his taste of victory, his devotion to his wife and his opinion of Rakhi Sawant.
How does it feel to win Bigg Boss?
Honestly, I'm still getting used to the fact. Reality TV is a big thing abroad, but I didn't know how big it'd be over here. I thought maybe it will catch on. But when I was inside I had no clue how big the whole situation is. It feels great to have won and it is heartening to have gotten the kind of feedback from the junta. I've got this kind of love and respect after 16 years. I'm glad that the industry and the people have given me a second chance.
Did you think you'd win?
Not at all! I had confided in Hanumanji and my guru that I definitely didn't expect to win. There's a reason for everything, just because you desire something doesn't mean you deserve it. I wondered if people would appreciate the way I've conducted myself. But I had the desire to walk out on the last day. There would be three-four housemates with me and that would still be a victory for me. It was only during the last three hours when it was just me and Carol that I thought I had a 50 per cent chance of winning. It was only when I walked out (of the house) that Arshad told me, 'Do you know what this means…you won, Rahul, you won!" It is very heartening to see that the country - the majority that is, appreciated my values. We might be very modern, but we still have our values and that's what makes our country the way it is.
How are you going to spend the winnings?
I don't want to just jump out and make tall claims. But I do know that I'm going to do something for the benefit of children. I will be going to Akkalkot to meet Gajanand Maharaj about this. I rather do something with the people I've been working with and trust. I wish I had won 50 crores so I could help people but I have to make the most of what I've got.
There are allegations that the happenings at Big Boss were manipulated?
When you're in that house, you're cut off from everything - there are no mobiles, no TV and no way to contact home. Under normal circumstances when you're living with your family you constantly have the support of your loved ones. But in that house, you didn't know whether you wanted to trust them or not. I might not like things about my housemates, but I cannot judge them as it is none of my business. I want to say that everything in that show was real. We knew there were cameras covering every inch of the place except the bathrooms. But there was no script, you can't keep acting for three months; no actor in the world is that brilliant.
How are things between you and Rakhi Sawant now?
I'm fine with her and I don't hold any grudges. I've never claimed to completely understand Rakhi. But I've always felt she should be more trusting and forgiving so she can get more out of life. From what people say, I truly feel she's not all that bad.
Will you be going to Australia to meet your wife Rajlakshmi?
Yes, very shortly. I've been talking to her and whenever I do my emotions go haywire. But I don't want to jet in and out of the country every two days. She told me to finish with the show before coming to Australia. I also need a little break. I'm not sure when exactly I'll leave.
There's a rumour that Sherlyn Chopra is the new woman in your life.
All crap; some people are imagining things in their heads. In this industry, I've even been linked with my own mother; I've read in the newspapers that I've been killed four times. That's not the case at all. I love my woman, she's incredible. Rajlakshmi is the only woman in my life and will always be.
