Analysis of Salman's bias in Weekend Ka Wow

Weekend Ka Wow with Salman Khan usually starts with Salman Khan chitchatting with the audience. This time it almost seemed like he couldn't wait to go into the Bigg Boss House through Me Tv and talk to the contestants.

I'll now go straight to the part where Salman Khan started talking to the contestants about the happenings of the show over the past week which led to #UnfairSalman trending again (on 1^st position) after the show ended at 10 pm last night. Of course his fans immediately tried to trend #SalmanIsAlwaysFair but this hastag did not appear on India trends.

Why is it that a hashtag #UnfairSalman which in the past 3 years (since twitter has become a popular social platform in India) has NEVER been used (with all of those past 3 seasons hosted and co-hosted by Salman Khan) is now trending on Twitter since Episode 40 that was aired last to last Saturday. People are signing petitions on Facebook saying Salman Khan is being unfair on the show.

The question that arises is what has caused such a change of hearts within a section of the public that they are voicing their opinions so voraciously on Salman Khan being unfair or biased.

Now Salman Khan himself had raised points while clarifying his name and stand after #UnfairSalman had trended in India and people had criticized the way he had dealt with Kushal and Gauhar which you can read here. People had claimed that he was favouring Armaan and Tanisha. Last week Salman Khan had specifically asked the contestants and people how he should host this show because he was himself confused.

So let's list some points which are absolutely necessary for a host to possess and whether Salman Khan is at all following them or not?

1) A host doesn't treat different contestants differently. SAME GAME, SAME RULES. A host understands his role and tries not to step out of it. If he's a friend, philosopher and guide to one contestant, he should be the same for all. If he prefers to be indifferent, distant or neutral, he should behave the same with all.

Keeping in mind yesterday's episode, I'll illustrate whether he did this or not (even though for the Kushal-Gauhar and Armaan-Tanisha differential treatment I have provided ample proof from previous episodes thatshows clearly that the Bigg Boss show is BIASED and Salman Khan presented the Weekend Ka Wow Show in the same light.)

Yesterday Salman Khan was seen telling Ajaz that he (Salman Khan) himself may roam on screen shirtless and in a towel but when you are living in a house with people, you have to respect the fact that someone may not like it. To quote him "kisi ko koi cheez jab achchi nahi lagti toh matt karo.. ismein stand kya lena.. ab apan apne ghar pe nahi hain yeh Bigg Boss Ka Ghar hai..." (If someone doesn't like something then don't do it.. now we are not living in our house, this is Bigg Boss's House).

While Salman spoke, which sounded evidently at first in favour of Tanisha, we could see Tanisha brimming with joy ..

Immediately while saying the above quoted sentence, Salman suddenly became ambiguous and was heard saying: "..aur phir hum log modern log hai ki nahi yaar...apan swimming wimming ke liye jaate hai ki nahi ... apan salwar kameez mein swimming karte hain" (and then we are modern people aren't we my friend.. don't we go for swimming-wimming..do we swim in salwar kameez). At this point he started taking Ajaz's side indirectly telling Tanisha that people in swimming pools are bare-chested too and we are a modern society. However at no point did he directly address Tanisha over the issue or asked her why she over-reacted.

By this point Ajaz's expression was so clueless and confused that Salman had to literally grab his attention by saying "Ajaz Bhai" since Ajaz was not responding at all.

Then again Salman Khan added : "swimming pool ke andar apni ma behenein swim suits pehnti ke nahi pehnti...ghoom phir ke apan sab kaanch ke gharo mein rehtein hain.. apne par hi aati hai.." (in swimming pools, don't our mothers and sisters wear swimming costumes or not... by the end of it all of us live in glass house's and what goes around comes around). Here Salman Khan again seemed to have started taking Ajaz's class for telling Sofia that she has also publicly published pictures in bikinis so it's ok if he is bare-chested in the bathroom. You can read about this issue here. Salman implied that if our mothers and sisters wear swim-suits while swimming, don't tell another woman what she wears because we all do the same things. So before raising a finger on someone else, you please look within. Don't throw stones at other peoples' houses when your own house is made of glass.

All these things were said in one breath and it sounded so ambiguous. Nevertheless what came across is Salman Khan telling Ajaz he was wrong, then he told him he was right and then again he told him he was wrong while he did not question Sofia or Tanisha even once. Tanisha was never asked why she made it a huge issue despite knowing that a man roaming around bare-chested was very normal. Also why could he not ask Tanisha and Sofia that if they felt offended by a semi nude man, why could they not excuse him for 2 minutes when he even asked them to leave the bathroom.

SO IS THIS DIFFERENT TREATMENT FOR DIFFERENT CONTESTANTS? Would you say #SalmanIsAlwaysFair or #UnfairSalman ?

2) A host doesn't get too personal with the contestants nor does he do something, which doesn't let a contestant be herself/himself and disrupts his plan of action or game plan or strategy in the show.

Salman Khan was heard praising Sangram for keeping his cool and not giving one abuse to Armaan while Armaan abused him incessantly thus making himself look negative. This was the first time Salman Khan addressed Armaan's habit of abusing men and women left, right and centre. Again he did not address Armaan directly or question him as to why he abuses people so much and doesn't respect women. Neither did Armaan give an explanation nor was he asked for one. However it's commendable that Salman Khan brought up this topic and criticized Armaan for abusing.

Salman Khan was also seen saying everyone has fans and imagine if he says something against Sangram the entire "pehelwaan community" will go against him. Isn't that what biggbossfan.com had said when Armaan had said Sangram belonged to a Akhada and not their society.

Soon after Salman told Sangram, quote "Sangram sabke point of views hai..iss waqt inke jo point of views hai ki aap stand nahi lete ..ab wo h aapka decision hai ki aap le ya na le" (Sangram everyone has their point of view.. at this time their point of view is that you don't have a stand .. now it's your decision whether you take a stand or not).

After sometime, he started speaking about Pratyusha. He said: "Aur Kamya I can see that you're not happy with Pratyusha.. it's so evident.. aap bahut sahi jaa rahi ho aur aap usko majburan aap inko jhel rahi ho aaj kal" (Kamya I can see the you're not happy with Pratyusha..it's so evident..you're going very well and you are forcefully tolerating her). Salman at this point realized that the word "jhel rahi ho" (tolerating her) was very rude and promptly retracted from it saying that was not what he meant and that his language is becoming like Ajaz. Seriously?

Salman Khan has mocked Pratyusha week after week (it's not funny anymore) for being clueless and for not taking a stand. He's not really homed in on Elli's oh so obvious conveniently-clueless ways.

When Pratyusha DECIDED TO TAKE A STAND OR VOICE HER OPINION he chose to make fun of her. He was seen making fun of Pratyusha's fight with Sangram. So just when Pratyusha started taking a stand on whatever she thought best to react upon, Salman told her that she looked wrong as it was an unnecessary reaction while when Tanisha reacted on Ajaz's bare-chest he did not at all question her unnecessary reaction.

So is Salman Khan getting too personal with the contestants or is doing something, which doesn't let a contestant be herself/himself thereby interfering or disrupting a contestants plan of action/game plan or strategy in the show? Would you say #SalmanIsAlwaysFair or #UnfairSalman ?

3) A host doesn't interfere with the show by letting personal issues spill over on to the show. It's a reality show about the housemates. The focus should be on them instead of the host. He shouldn't use information like the whole of India agrees with me when he is countering a contestant. He should make his case rationally and then drop it if the contestant doesn't listen.

Salman brought up Kushal's topic and how he has told the press and media that Salman Khan had said sorry to him. Salman admitted he had said sorry to him but had done it out of politeness. He expressed his disapproval over the fact that Kushal was taking mileage over Salman Khan saying sorry to him. To quote Salman Khan : "That does not mean aap mileage le uske upar..That's not cool." (It does not mean you take mileage over that. That's not cool.)

Salman then asked the housemates as to who wanted Kushal in the house again? Gauhar, Kamya, Pratyusha and Ajaz were seen raising their hands.

Salman Khan said if Kushal says sorry, he is most welcome in the house. It was not made clear who he should say sorry to? Andy or Tanisha?

Salman then said that if Kushal was to come back, a precedent (example) would be set that a person accused for physical violence has been brought back.

Now wait a minute. Wasn't Dolly Bindra and Pooja Missra brought back into the house (be it as contestant or guest) after they were evicted on the grounds of physical violence. Has everyone in the Bigg Boss creative team gone through some bout of PARTIAL AMNESIA that they don't remember any of this?

Immediately Armaan and Tanisha reacted to the question of Kushal being brought back into the house.Armaan said that if physical violence was an illegal act in the Bigg Boss House and if a person charged of this would be brought back then he won't sit quietly.

Gauhar interjected that many people had done physical violence in the house but not evicted for it. Tanisha interrupted her and started saying that Kushal had threatened Andy and told him he will hit him more. Gauhar protested that Tanisha should let her state her point. Immediately Salman Khan cut Gauhar and told her that she has a habit of wanting people to listen to her when she is giving her point of view and asking everyone to keep quiet whereas she kept interrupting Andy during his speech.

"maine ye notice kiya hai pehle bhi jab aap bol rahi thhi toh tanisha ka ek slight comment aaya.. speech ke time pe.. aur aapne bola jab main baat kar rahi hoon toh blah blah blah aap chali ..correct.. uske baad jab andy speech de raha thha ..aap logon ne chorra hi nahi... jab aap baat karna chahti ho toh sab aapki baat sunein ..jaise sofia ke saath bhi hua..sofia ko aapse baat nahi karni thhi toh nahi karke chali gayi."

(I have noticed this from before that when you were giving a speech, a slight comment from Tanisha came and you said when I speak blah blah blah blah and you went on but when Andy was giving his speech you guys didn't leave interrupting him... When you want to talk you want everyone should listen to you ..like what happened with Sofia.. Sofia didn't want to speak to you so she walked off."

The funniest part is that while Gauhar was justifying herself, Tanisha was shouting(cat-calling) over her. I don't know why Salman was ignoring that and not telling Tanisha the same thing which he was telling Gauhar.

This is a reality show where any further interference is bound to affect/alter the real' behaviour of the contestant, which the show promises to reveal over the course of a hundred days or so. The show is not a personality development workshop for the contestants with Salman Khan or any host as their teacher or guide. Such information puts undue pressure on the contestant to conform. Even telling a contestant "aap theek jaa rahein hai" (you are going the right way) is like giving a contestant cues regarding what they should be doing. It interferes with their real' behaviour. Look at the case of Andy. He was well loved by all a week or so ago . However all the encouragement Salman Khan gave him went to his head and he breached boundaries in tasks for example brandishing a girl's lingerie in front of the cameras.

So as a host is Salman Khan interfering with the show by letting personal issues spill over on to the show? Has the focus shifted from the housemates to the host and his personal views? 4) A host should make inferences only on the basis of the evidence at hand and not draw conclusions about the intentions of the housemates. The host can question but not make a statement about someone's intent.

Salman was seen reprimanding Gauhar for calling Elli "Sirf Ek Chehra" or just a face and he added that her intent of saying such a thing meant that Elli just has a pretty face and has no heart or brain. To quote Salman Khan : "aapke jo kehne ka jo intention thha wo h just a face nahi just a pretty face ke aapke paas sirf yehi hai aapke paas na dil hai na dimaag hai na jigar hai yeh aapko bevakoof bana rahein hain sabke sab aap puppet hai..aapko kuch nahi pata." (Your intention of saying wasn't that she is just a face, you meant just a pretty face who doesn't have a heart, a brain or a liver, all of them are making you a fool and you are a puppet, you don't know anything).

Salman with all fairness Elli did say herself she is JUST A FACE and how can anyone infer what anybody's intent was when she said so. In fact we don't even know what exactly Elli meant by it. And Andy was calling Sangram a mohra (peg/puppet).

Salman painted the whole Gauhar speaking about Elli thing negatively.He chose to draw very adverse inferences about what exactly she meant and he spoke as if he knew her real intent. He's not a mind-reader. He justified Sofia walking away from Gauhar when Gauhar tried to speak to her in the politics task and said she was not being rude to Gauhar whereas she clearly was. Sofia's behaviour had not been consistent during the politics task as she first sided with Kamya's party and then admitted it was all made up. Gauhar tried to question her about the same. Sofia had no answer to her and that's why she chose to walk away so that she may not be exposed to criticism from Kamya's group.

So is Salman Khan drawing conclusions about the intention of the housemates? Is he making an inference only on the basis of the evidence at hand? Is the host questioning a housemate or making a statement about a housemate's intent? Would you say #SalmanIsAlwaysFair or #UnfairSalman ?

Vodafone Caller of The Week then spoke to Armaan and questioned Armaan that he speaks rudely to everyone and abuses everyone and then says sorry but doesn't keep up with the sorry. Armaan promised he will never behave the same way again. Salman also pointed out that Armaan speaks very rudely to Tanisha for which Armaan apologized to Tanisha.

Salman Khan also reprimanded Tanisha for appearing like a doormat when it comes to Armaan. He added that "it's your moral right ...as a woman you have to stand up" implying that she should not accept Armaan speaking rudely to her. Tanisha added: "Ji nahi hum khade hotey hain" (No I do stand up)

Salman was later seen telling Gauhar that why does she feel she is getting targeted. She said that when Salman calls what she says as "mean" whereas what people tell her is hardly ever touched upon, (she gave Sofia's example where Sofia told her that she can't talk for 10 hours like her), then she feels that Salman Khan is making a judgement.

He then in a light way added that Andy and Tanisha making fun of Gauhar's fainting bouts was mean and NOT COOL. Tanisha, Armaan and Andy were seen sniggering. There was evidently no strong objection over this from Salman's side.

So Salman actually seems confused now as to how to host the show. The problem perhaps arises because Salman Khan himself is not clear about his role in the show. If he's unclear about the demands of his role, he should clarify it with the show makers and the contestants. It should come across very clearly when he's making a case on his own and when he's doing it on behalf of Bigg Boss. Part of the problem is that Bigg Boss has not clarified his stand vis-a-vis Salman's role as the host.

Bigg Boss has not been vocal enough inside the house about morality or the right thing' this season. On top of that-Why was the "Is Salman Khan biased towards Tanisha poll" deleted from the Colors Bigg Boss site? Such convenient censorship hurts the perceived fairness of the show so when Salman Khan clarifies that everything is "Bigg Boss ka decision" like he did last weekend, people find it a little hard to trust.

Tonight we will see that Armaan FOR REAL cannot stick to what he says or promises. He will be seen fighting with Ajaz which started while Candy got evicted from the house. Infact they were seen fighting it out infront of Salman Khan.
