Narcissists are created often by a narcissistic parent.Or some narcissist with authority. I get the feeling he was dismissed and invalidated a lot as a child which is why gets SO upset whenever he is criticised. He feels his all his power is being taken away from him even when a slight disagreement happens. Im sure his boundaries as a person were violated a lot when he was young and since he couldnt find a healthy way to sort it out he became defensive and closed off. Its sad in a way. Only a compassionate but strong person can take him out of that state.With enough compassion to see why hes like that and enough strength to resist his rudeness and give it back to him. Tough love as they say ..is what he needs.
