CHAPTER SIX:
Pratap was in his room thinking whether he should text her or not, it's been two days since they talked, tomorrow is school again and he wanted to apologize for shouting at her. He wouldn't want an awkward moment when she would meet him in school on Monday. Besides, since his mind started feeling these strange sensations with her around, he missed school on weekends, he missed not seeing her smile. He wished school would extent to Saturdays.
She was right about his parents; never had anyone talked to him about them before. He knew she was trying to help. He was just too hurt and angry to suddenly take someone's advice on his parents, whoever that might be. However, all through the weekend her words had played on his mind in loops. And also, her eyes, that were clearly hurt when she asked " You Don't believe in Love?" He opened her chatbox in Whatsapp and typed, " Am sorry. " Sending it he felt restless. He should have called, but he feared fumbling on his words again.
Within seconds a reply came, "Why?"
" Because I shouted." He typed back.
" I know you didn't mean anything." His heart skipped a beat as a smile appeared. unknowingly on his face.
" Then why were you sad?"
The moment she saw this message he regretted sending it, they never talked of their feelings with each other but now he has officially let her know how well he understands her. He hit his head with his pillow for this utter stupidity.
" Nobody shouts at me like that." Came a well thought reply in a minute.
He smiled, this girl can't even lie properly. Her words played in his mind Your Parents... They still love each other...
He remembered last day in school, they were discussing if Phool and Akki were in love and he had asked Ajabde,
" What is true love to you?"
She thought a little and answered, " One day you will find someone who will love you and know you more than you know yourself. You will feel the same about her and you won't be able to imagine life without her, that would be true love."
The way she explained simply yet beautifully, mesmerized him. He wanted to tell It's you I feel this for... A pain held him back! Tears came at the thought of losing her over his insecurities in relationships. Maybe she could be happier elsewhere. She deserved more love and appreciation than anyone in the world. He was not sure his bruised heart could give her that or not. After all, Pratap Singh had grown up learning never to express his love or pain. He had grown up learning never to love someone more than himself. But he didn't know how and when she became his world. He didn't know when he had started needing her advise on smallest details like what he should wear at a party, or gift a friend. What would he do if she was not there? The thought brought tears.
Daadi came knocking. His chain of thoughts were broken.
" Beta , I want to..." She saw him wipe away a tear and sit up.
" What's wrong?" She asked worried.
"Nothing." He looked away.
" Your mother... "
" What bout her?" He looked up, a little irritated.
" I think you should talk to her , she is worried about you."
" About me?? Why?" He spoke still in irritation.
" Ask her yourself."
A little scared Jaivanta entered the room. Daadi left them alone.
" What's wrong Pratap? You seem upset since last two days." She sat down in one corner of his bed.
" Nothing Maa sa..." He lied looking away.
" Did you fight with Rohan? " She asked looking at his grim face.
" No, we didn't talk."
" Akki? Or that girl Phool?"
" No. You know they are together now." He tried to give a smile and change the topic.
" Ajab is it??" The question made his heart skip a beat. His smile faded.
" Maa sa am fine, I fought with no one. Seriously, you can ask her." He anwered firmly.
" Then tell me something straight, you like her?"
" I don't know..." He wished she wouldn't ask that. He felt uneasy.
" Pratap..." Jaivanta was not one, to leave without a reply.
" Yes... ??"
" Tell me, do you like her?"
" Yes...I ... Umm..." Pratap was shocked at his own confession.
" Then what is stopping you?" Pratap had no answer.
Jaivanta's fears were coming true.
" Is it my failed marriage?" Her voice choked.
Pratap looked in to his mother's eyes for the first time in all these years. She was in tears.
" I love your father, Beta, I don't know what went wrong." She sobbed. He hugged her. She hugged him back. She told him something very important then, something he totally forgot.
" In your family it is a tradition to get engaged when you are eighteen, only two months are left for your birthday and your father will start looking for a fiance soon, he asked me if you like someone already, I told him I will ask you... so you better act fast if you want to...
" I want to..." He was a little red as his mother smiled.
"I can talk to Hansa if you want..." She suggested.
" No let me talk to Ajab first." He said determined.
" As you wish." Jaivanta smiled, but she knew her son too well. He was brave enough to face anything but his own feelings.
" Ajab! Ajab!" Her mother was calling her till she reached her dark room, Ajabde sat up, her eyes said she had cried. For the past two days, Hansa had noticed that her daughter was not her usual jolly self. What happened to her she was not sure but it surely had something to do with Pratap because after he left, Ajab skipped dinner. Her daughter never skipped a meal unless she was fasting. She could see the lights on in Ajab's room till late, something kept her daughter awake and sleepless. She was worried knowing Ajabde was always good in hiding her pains over others happiness.
Ajabde was in her room all weekend, thinking of an apology. She barely knew him enough to even raise the topic of his family problems. She was stupid enough to do so. That day she suddenly felt she could tell him anything without a thought. That was utter stupid of her. But ever since her mom told her what Jaivanta Mausi had told, she felt Pratap was so alone and hurt, he needed someone to talk to. She wanted to be that someone so badly. She wanted to be the one to take away his pain and make him believe in happiness again. But his words... his angry words were so full of determination. He didn't even believe in love and she had fallen head over heels in his love. Something in his eyes, seemed to contradict his words. Ajab shook her head, it was all in her imagination. She needed to make things right, and save the friendship, it was very precious for her.
The ping made her jump up literally that night. She read his message wiping her tears away. A faint smile on her face. And he asked why she was sad. Was it just him or her face was that easily readable? Hansa walked in then with a news that really made her feel like she was going to have a heart attack.
" Jaivanta called. She wants to come over and talk to... you... " Hansa was confused as Ajab's eyes widened.
" Me?"
" Yes, something very important, she told me to be present too, so you have to skip school."
" Skip... School?" She thought a little. "But..." That meant adding fuel to their misunderstandings.
" And..." Hansa cut her. " Jaivanta doesn't want Pratap to know." Ajabde was left numb sitting there for how long she couldn't tell. Maybe, Pratap had told his mother about her interference and she didn't like it. She hoped it was that, but something in her mind said it wasn't.Next day in school he arrived late much to his dismay and saw she was not there. Phool informed him that she was not well. Pratap was worried. Knowing her, she must have cried all weekend over what he had said. He felt restless all day, so much he wanted to tell her and listen to.
Phool saw his restlessness and told him, " Why don't you go over to her place and sort things out?"
He decided to make things right.
