I am not saying Pratap was jealous or envious. I am only saying they did not share a goody-goody relation as this serial shows if historical records are anything to go by (like only Shakti competed whereas Pratap never had any such rivalry).
Of course there must have been some goodness and attachment as brothers or else Shakti wouldn't have saved him.
Assuming from historical records I think Pratap was a talented, gifted boy and a favourite of his father and nobles thanks to his talents BUT also his obedience. He is clever enough to not to hurt his father's ego.
Even in the show, when he went to appeal to Raawat ji he did not say he was doing it for Shakti but said he was requesting him to prevent death sentence for sake of US as father. Now also, he did not oppose US' decision. He protested when US disowned Shakti. But fell silent when Raawat ji offered to adopt him.
Not that he nurses ambitions to become king. But he is always careful to not to oppose US much and obey him as much as possible.
Or else he could have said even now that he would leave or won't accept to be Yuvraj if Bhai Shakti was disowned like this (as he had threatened before Shakti's death sentence at the vadh sthal).
Shakti exists. Fine. He is not thrown out to wander in deserts. Fine enough. The rest, it's best to cry and stay silent instead of disobeying or arguing with Rana ji further.
Not that I am pointing out fingers at Pratap, I am only talking about history as it is mentioned.
We can't be sure what actually was. Historical records do not mention much about the kind of relation that US and Shakti shared. All they say is that Shakti lost favour with US. And one record says US disowned him right after the astrologer's prediction! Other incidents aren't even mentioned (seems the show is picking up pieces from here and there and trying to weave a proper record).
Better to keep debate more open than restrict it. I think the entire family was twisted. And while I commend the hero for his bravery and sacrifice and the place he occupies in history, I don't buy this narrative of him being flawless either. If history says they were rivals then that also matters apart from what the show is showing.
Very less is written about Shakti. So we do not know how he was. One site said Shakti cut his thumb on his own to check sharpness of a knife. There is no mention of him trying to do so in defiance of his father. It's said US happened to see it and was baffled by the brutality he inflicted on himself so he consulted the astrologer on the boy's future. The astrologer predicted he'd be no good for the kingdom so US decided to throw him!
So how do we conclude what was there and what wasn't? Who knows if Shakti was as insolent as he was shown in the serial? Or Pratap is all goody goody sweetie pie who could not even see a drop of blood?
I have no doubts on fathers playing favourites and mostly favouring the eldest son because it was the norm in old days and even in MB, Dhritrashtra cared only about Duryodhan and in Ramayan Dashrath is always bleeding and crying for eldest son Ram. So I believe US also indulged in favouritism. I would have doubted if he indeed favoured Bhaatiyani as much as this show is showing, but that is evident in how he even chucked his favouritism towards Pratap only to make Jagmal the new king at Bhaatiyani's behest!
Who knows if Shakti saved Pratap out of brotherly love or as an act of defiance to Mughals when he felt insulted and used by them? It was his heart that prompted him to save his brother or again his ego?
We can only assume!
History is barely there, scattered records, lot of hearsay, different accounts by different historians, some say too positive things, some say negative things, there is always a tendency to make someone hero and someone villain. Facts are barely there.
The serial is proceeding as per the norm. Hero is unblemished and divine. They are trying to give a fair chance to enemies within by giving them psycho issues. And painting Islamic invaders as beastly brutes (they may have a heart or psycho issues but that's not to be shown). So be it.
For now, let Shakti rot in humiliation and live on favours and bheek of others. And enjoy temporary happiness of Pratap being made the official heir (only to be robbed of this title later!).
Shakti was indeed better off dead.
