Hi There, My first post in this forum,
Before sharing my view, I would like to preface by stating that there is a flip side to every coin- something a famous author did when he wanted to create an action packed thriller and went on to create a rollicking , fun filled caper that went on to become a super hit novel.. I too am going to take that " flip side" route.
Beyhadh - something that crosses the established, accepted line. A behavior or action that is considered abnormal or extreme or beyond the purview of a sane, reasonable human being.
When ever I watch a show, I am always intrigued by the names of the character- why has that character been named so? what does it hint at ? I love to unravel the meaning behind the naming and likewise, I was intrigued by the names of the three leads, Maya, Arjun and Saanjh.
Maya - A successful women, restrained, controlled, intelligent and remote. A woman who displays traits of being a psycho or who constantly exhibits abnormal or extreme behavior. She is ruthless, coldly determined, unforgiving and cruel - but is it her only facet? No!! she is fiercely loyal to her loved one's, does not hesitate to stand up and fight for her own.
Arjun - A man who gives an appearances of shallowness but one who is capable of deep feelings. He is pragmatic, big hearted, open minded, naive. He is ambitious, materialistic, career minded yet loves freedom.
Saanjh - A simple, next door girl who is bubbly, loves life, positive. one who is willing to do anything for her friend. level headed, intelligent and intuitive.
^^ This was how the three characters were delineated (for me) but the context or the underlying theme is BEYHADH! How does these characters fare with respect to it..
Everyone expects Maya to go the extreme, even I expect her to!! Her obsession, her ruthlessness will come into play and cause destruction yet somehow I feel she is the red herring!! Occasionally, we get a glimpse of that warm, generous Maya who is imprisoned within the bars of her trauma. A caring girl who is trapped in the darkness of her fears, essentially, she is MAYA , an illusion - if she is an illusion, is she the illusion of a woman who is insane or of a normal woman who is trapped in the shell of an insane woman? Is she the red herring or a Maya who is there to confuse us while someone else is going to cross all the boundaries? Perhaps.
Arjun appears to be a shallow, superficial guy who does not appear to understand the undercurrents of a situation but is it true? Arjun, the character from Mahabharat was popular among women, loved the good things in life, was a creative artist (dancer) yet he was renowned for his skill in archery, for his focus and for his ability to tear through any dimension and hit the target!... Arjun of Beyhadh displays that insight, that focus - for example, when the tabloid came out with the photo, he was the only man who cut through the cacophony and focused on how it affects a WOMAN when such scandalous items are published.
Saanjh the most interesting name for me and the one who holds my interest in this series. Saanjh, dusk a time when shadows blend with the light, a time when darkness meets the good, a time that ushers in the increasing darkness. Saanjh, in the series is a veritable goody two shoes, one who is forever thinking about the welfare of her buddy , one who is forever shadowing Arjun, following him around - When will this cross the line, when will the light in her blend in to the darkness heralding the night? So far her cross over is seen in the bright light, her dark actions have not strengthened, The dusk in dusky woke up when she shouted that Arjun should have let Maya die from the balloon solving all problems. The presence of Dusk was made felt when it was explained that Saanjh never allowed ANYONE to come in between her and Arjun, or the fact that she NEVER allowed even Arjun's younger brother to come to the shanti spot that she zealously guards. The dusk in dusky in Saanjh strengthened when she says, " Arjun sirf mera hai" .
It would be interesting to see the Maya of Saanjh dissipating and the Saanjh in Maya weakening.
