"You're going to see that underlying humanity, even when he's making the most devious, terrible decisions, and you need someone who has that humanity - deep down, bedrock humanity - so you say, watching this show, 'All right, I'll go for this ride. I don't like what he's doing, but I understand, and I'll go with it for as far as it goes.' If you don't have a guy who gives you that, despite the greatest acting chops in the world, the show is not going to succeed."

-Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad.

I'll just let the aforementioned quote do all the talking.

Great post. Walter White is a superb character. Like him, there are many anti hero's that come with that disclaimer. The brilliance is in the writing. The character. If the character can connect to the audience that we know this guy / woman is still human inside, then we will feel a connection. Be it all the way back to Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights. We know he's not a good guy, but a part of you feels his pain, and you empathize.

I feel Maya has been well written and despite her not being a necessarily "good" person, we are rooting for her. We are getting behind her. We are keen to see where she goes. She is not a Heroine. But neither is she a Vamp! She is a Female lead and an Anti-Heroine. The woman to watch. I watch this show to watch Maya. I do not and will not justify her. I just want to see what she does next! I just want to see her! THAT is good writing and then comes good acting and the two are a killer combo!
