Dada Saheb Phalke, Raj Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Satyajit Ray, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachhan, Aamir Khan — the list of legends and living legends in the world of films is endless. However there is no such rule applicable in the world of television. There is not one particular actor who has an image beyond a particular character even if it's a big name as Smriti Iraani, Ronit Roy or Sangeeta Ghosh. In the world of television it's the character that is big and not the actor.

Therefore, serials like Sarrkkar, Viraasat, Devi, Rabba Ishq Na Hove, Kaalchakra, Saathiya, Thodi si Zameen Thoda sa Aasman etc haven't fared well in spite of the presence of stars in lead roles. Maybe that's the reason why the producers and the channels don't mind introducing new faces in strong characters and big budget serials.

"Nobody is permanent in the television world. The act can be permanent but the actor isn't. I myself have introduced many fresh faces on television like Renuka Shahane, Raju Kher, etc. Where are they today," says veteran producer-director Ravi Rai. Another veteran producer Dheeraj Kumar too feels the same. "Television stars have got a small life. I had done a film with Rekhaji in December 1969 called Raaton Ka Raja . And you can see that Rekhaji and Amitabhj are still working in films. But in TV things like that don't happen," says Dheeraj Kumar.

This explains the sea of new faces seen every year in serials like Saat Phere, Kasamh Se, Ek Ladki Anjaani Si and the more recent Paraya Dhan, Betiyaan, Saathi Re and Solah Sringar. Sanjay Wadhwa, the producer of the hit soap Saat Phere who also produces Paraya Dhan and Saathi Re explains in a one liner, "Everything has its value for a certain time only." He has his successful track record of hitting the jackpot in Saat Phere with the unconventional new actress Rajshri Thakur and trying to repeat the magic with Gauri Nigudkar and Parakh Madan in Paraya Dhan and Saathi Re respectively.

Director Hemant Prabhu, the maker of the Sahara serial Sati also tried to follow the trend by making his actress wife Mansi Salvi appear in the lead role in a completely new avatar. After losing oodles of fat and with better make up and grooming, Mansi was almost unrecognisable.

"Marketing is an integral part of the television industry. If the channel's marketing team finds a new face they would promote him or her. Even viewers like seeing new fresh faces on television. Once an actor signs a daily soap, he/she is all over the newspapers. The media follows him everywhere. Which gym he goes to, which restaurants he likes to visit, everything is being reported. Obviously the more you see a face, the interest level in that particular person falls down after some time. As for me Mansi's new look helped to incite curiosity in Sati initially. She was like a complete new package," says Prabhu.

Well, it's another story that Sati still hasn't done that well. It looks like, if all goes well, a TV star shines only in his debut serial. "A film can be a hit because of Shah Rukh Khan. But television is basically recognised by a banner, like Ekta Kapoor's serials come with a certain promise. In television the actors are not known by their acting skills but by the production houses they associate with. The best example of this is Mihir (Amar Upadhya). Everybody knows what happened to him once he developed a fake belief that Kyunki Saans Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is a hit due to him. He is not to bee seen anywhere now," explains Ravi Rai.

Spotlight: By A.L. Chougule

There is no doubt in his mind that prime time television entertainment is dominated and driven by women. "All shows are women-centric and they begin with women protagonists. Men come into the picture only when the show picks up and settles down to decent TRP figures," says Gautam Rhode who debuted on television a year ago as NRI Anish in Baa Bahu Aur Baby. Gautam is happy that he is playing the lead character in a serial that is thankfully not a family drama but an action, comedy and adventure series. The show is called Lucky and the model-turned-actor is playing the title character.

"I am really happy to play the role because not only it's the lead but the character's name is also that of the serial," says Gautam who plays a conman in the show, which is targeted at kids and teenagers. Lucky is a story of a young man called Lucky who runs a fake antique shop in Chor Bazaar and has the simplest way of living.

He cons people by selling them fake antiques and actually making them believe that the artifacts are genuine. Says Gautam, "Lucky is a street smart, confident and intelligent young man who loves life the way it comes till he gets to know about the Rakshaks who were born to protect the priceless treasures and that now he is going to be the chosen one for the job, that is the fifth Rakshak. Though totally unprepared and unconvinced for the job he aggress to go with his new assignment on learning that his father was the fourth Rakshak who had died when Lucky was a kid."

Thus begins his new life that takes him and his gang on an exciting journey that promises to enthrall and entertain young viewers. "Basically Lucky is a conman who loves money and girls and his character doesn't change. The character will not go through many transformations and become a good guy," laughs Gautam who has also bagged a role in Betiyaan Apni Yaa Paraya Dhan where he plays lead protagonist Krishna's love interest Parth. "Parth is Lord Krishna's avatar. He is quite unlike Lucky, honest, levelheaded and talks less. But when he talks he talks sense," adds Gautam.

'I am a bit of a rebel'

HARSHADA REGE

Despite acting in two Telugu films, Shilpa Shinde preferred to act in television rather than struggle in films. "I realised that the TV industry is very huge. And the way it's growing, it's only going to get bigger. Also, with TV one gets to do many roles. But in films you have to wait for a long time before you can get any prominent roles. One can't deny that Bollywood is maledominated," says Shilpa, who plays Veera in Betiyaan apni yaa… Paraaya Dhan
on Star One. The actor says that though she enjoyed her stint with Telugu films, she has not signed any more films down South. "But I have learnt a lot over there. The southern film industry is like an acting school. One gets to learn everything," she says. The actor says that though at present she is doing only one serial, she is happy with the kind of work she is doing. "We have a huge unit. So it is fun to be on the sets. In fact, we miss each other when we don't have to shoot," she says.
Her character, that of Meera is of a rebel. Does she identify with the character? "I am a bit of a rebel. But not without a cause," laughs Shilpa

Oops, wrong number!

Two actresses of Betiyaan… Apni Ya Paraya Dhan enter the sets of Ghar Ki Lakshmi-Betiyaan, by mistake. This is what happens when two channels run soaps of the same name, and shoot at the same studio

Sapana Patil Poojary

Lost: Gauri Nigudkar, Jyoti Makker

Jyoti Makker aka Chand and Gauri Nigudkar aka Krishna, who play sisters in Betiyaan… Apni Ya Paraya Dhan (Star One) recently found themselves in an embarrassing situation when they realised that they had entered the sets of Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan (Zee TV), by mistake.

When contacted, Jyoti recalls the incident, "We usually shoot at a studio in Kanjurmarg. But that day, we had a shoot at Magnum studio at MIDC, Andheri. It was the first time that Gauri and I were going to Magnum and we didn't know the exact location. On reaching MIDC, we started looking for Magnum studio not realising that there also existed a Magnum Gold studio just close by. We asked for directions and ended up entering Magnum Gold instead."

Jyoti adds, "On the sets, we didn't come across our colleagues from the show. Even the crew didn't look familiar. We asked them if this was the set of 'Betiyaan', to which they nodded. We thought that our co-stars must be inside and we asked for directions to the make-up room. Meanwhile the production staff kept wondering if we were new entrants on the show. It was then that we felt sure that something is wrong and asked them again about the show. It was then it dawned upon us that we were on the sets of Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan. We made a quick exit. Thankfully, the staffs were co-operative."

Apparently, Jyoti has often committed silly mistakes which put her in embarrassing situations. "I was in Jodhpur for a shooting, when a similar incident happened. I came out of the loo and found my co-stars looking at me in surprise. When I asked them, they revealed that I had entered the men's washroom. Over the years, I have learnt to laugh at my mistakes."

Gauri was unavailable for comment.

Manish's TV comeback

After Hours Correspondent
Tuesday, November 21, 2006 19:39 IST

After playing a ruffian loverboy on 'Paraya Dhan', the actor will be seen in a different avatar

Returning after a nine month long sabbatical actor Manish Goyal says his role in 'Kaajjal' (Sony) will be diametrically opposite to that of the suave father he played in his latter days in 'Bhabhi' (Star Plus). "I have broken away from the father image of 'Bhabhi' and tried something different in 'Paraya Dhan'. And, I'm now about to take on a role that is completely different from all the earlier roles I have essayed," says the enthused actor.

Although his role in 'Kaajjal' will be restricted to around 50 episodes, he will provide the crucial angle in the love story between the two lead actors in the serial played by Surveen Chawla and Apurva Agnihotri. "I will be playing a silent, passionate, honest and nice person," is how Manish describes the character.

The actor starts shooting from December. "This is the first time that I will be playing my own age," laughs the actor, who received varied reactions for his stubbled ruffian look in 'Paraya Dhan' (Star One). Manish, along with wife Poonam, will also be hosting the semi-finals of 'Nach Baliye2' (Star One), and he is excited.

"My participation in 'Nach Baliye' changed the course of my career, and it opened up new facets of my personality," he says. Over the last one year, Manish has performed at several awards shows including dancing with Malaika Arora on 'Nach Baliye' recently.

Mannish walks out of Betiyaan; producer fumes!!!

Time and again Mannish Goel has made headlines, more often for the wrong reasons. And now he did what he does the best - Walk Out!!! The actor who is known for his outspoken nature opted out of Star One's Paraya Dhan-Betiyaan as he was asked to wait for a few hours while the others were shooting.

"I didn't ever expect this from Mannish"- Sunjoy Wadhwa, producer, Saat Phere

Sunjoy Wadhwa, producer, Sphere Origins is very disappointed with his behaviour. He throws light on what happened exactly, "We were shooting for a dance sequence, and Mannish was asked to wait for an hour or two which pissed him off. So much so that he took to throwing tantrums on the sets and said he won't report to work the next day. And that's what he did - he really didn't turn up!"

Adds Sunjoy, " We didn't make him wait for eternity, and he certainly gets paid the same amount, waiting or no waiting. Mannish is the highest paid actor on the sets of Betiyaan Paraya Dhan. When an artist does something of this sort, where does his level of commitment go? We are a team of 18 actors and it is very difficult for us to chalk out scenes to fit in all of them. Mannish always knew that he will have scenes on and off. Things could have been sorted out but he chose to part ways this way."

The Betiyaan family minus Mannish

No one can deny that Mannish had recieved a lot of appreciation for his intense character and rugged look in the show. So how does the producer intend to deal with the track now? "Our aim is to find a replacement now. We will try our level best to keep up to the audience's expectations. Mannish did a very good job, but probably we will find someone better than him," states Wadhwa.

Mannish was unavailable for comment.

This is not the first time Mannish has faced flak from his show or producer. Earlier he had a face off with Dolly Sohi while shooting of Star Plus' Bhabhi and no one can forget the showdown with Anuj Saxena (though the two tellywood men patched up on the latter's birthday). He has also been on a rejection spree where he has turned down quite some reputed shows like Kaajal, Viraasat, Pyar Ke Do Naam Ek Radha Ek Shyam.

Is Mannish still high on the Nach Baliye hangover? If that is so...he needs a wake up call!

Mannish loses another role
After Hours Correspondent
Friday, December 08, 2006 23:59 IST

The actor has been thrown out of 'Betiyaan Apni Yaa… Paraaya Dhan'

Only recently, TV actor Mannish Goel was replaced by Chetan Hansraj as the new character in 'Kaajjal' (Sony). Now, he has been replaced by the makers of 'Betiyaan Apni Yaa… Paraaya Dhan' (Star One). Apparently, he walked out of the sets on Friday even before the shoot was wrapped up.

On Mannish's sacking, the director of the series, Parthhoe Mithraa says, "I was told by the unit hands that Mannish had removed his wig and was leaving despite being told that he would have to wait an hour to complete the shoot. I went up to him and asked him what was wrong. He said it was nothing to do with me but he had issues with the production house. But he didn't even have the courtesy to tell me before leaving."

"He started his career with me in 'Ghar Ek Mandir' few years back and I have never seen this side of him. But now I am shocked and very disappointed at his behaviour. It has been brewing ever since we started 'Paraya Dhan'. He wouldn't give dates and constantly complained of being asked to wait on the sets," says Parthhoe.

"When you charge an exorbitant fee per day, you are expected to be on the sets all day and no one has ever said that life is easy when you are shooting for a daily series. He has been in the industry long enough to know that actors are expected to wait! He has set a bad example and has been unprofessional without doubt," fumes Parthhoe.

"I immediately called the producer Sunjoy Waddwa and the channel and asked for him to be replaced. His 'I was kept waiting' excuse is not acceptable. He was treated with kid's gloves here. Our shoots are held from 10am to 10pm unlike other production houses which work through the day and night. This production house is by far the best in the industry," signs off Parthhoe.

Mannish was not availabe for comment.

Manish Goyal is jobless

The out-of-work actor walks out of yet another show, director Sunjoy Wadhwa is furious.

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Unemployed: Manish Goyal

Manish Goyal is going a through a very lean patch in his career. Goyal's career looked promising after Nach Baliye last year. However, he became so selective after it that he chose to take a sabbatical instead of doing regular television shows. It's been one year and the actor hasn't landed a single role.

At such a time, when Sunjoy Wadhwa's Paraya Dhan could resurrect Manish's career, rumour has it that the actor has walked out of it, much to the annoyance of the producer. "On Thursday evening before his pack-up, Manish informed the executive producer of the show that he would not be coming for the shoot from the next day onwards," says Wadhwa. Apparently the reason for their tussle is the billing in the show. "To begin with Manish didn't want to wait for a couple of hours while the others finished their shots. He wanted his shots taken first. There are 18 characters in the show, and I can only shoot with them one at a time. He was the highest paid actor in the show and I don't see why he should complain if we ask him to wait. He is getting his money, isn't he?" The producer says that dealing with the high-handed behaviour of actors is extremely difficult. "As a producer I do understand actors' problems but sometimes actors trouble us a lot. Manish's starry tantrums cost me a lot of money. I'll have to now look for a replacement. His ouster has also disrupted the schedule of my show," Sunjoy snaps.

Sunjoy Wadhwa

While Sunjoy is busy looking for a replacement, the actor is busy looking for a show that will change his fortune. Manish says, "Since, Sunjoy has accepted the fact that he made me wait for hours on the sets, I guess that explains everything," says Manish who admits never wanting to play a small role in the show. "First, they promised me that mine would be a well fleshed out character. Since it was a cameo they said that I'd be required to shoot for 10 days a month. But I realised that I wasn't shooting more than 4 or 5 days a month. It's a character that they will never develop. All this while, they have been taking me for granted. I've been waiting for my juniors for hours on the sets. But Thursday was the final nail in the coffin." Apparently, for a ten-minute scene Manish was made to wait for 7 hours. He says, "They treated me really badly. I've worked hard to reach here and I certainly don't deserve to be treated like dirt. I want money to run my house but you can't turn around and say that 'you're getting paid. So you better wait.' I want to make money by working and not twiddling my thumbs." Manish feels that his decision to quit the show was a wise one. "I'm sure everything happens for the best," he says.

Raahil replaces Mannish!

Raahil Azam will step into Mannish Goyal's shoes in Betiyaan... Apni Ya Paraya Dhan

GITA HARI

Life has come a full circle for Raahil Azam. The actor will replace Mannish Goyal in Betiyaan... Apni ya Paraya Dhan on Star One. Raahil was the production house's original choice to play Vedant, the character with grey shades in the Rekha Modi-scripted serial. But at that point of time, he was doing Resham Dankh on Star One and Star Plus' Saarrthi, he could not accommodate dates and the role eventually went to Mannish.
But after the alleged walk-out of Mannish from the serial, Raahil was approached again and this time the actor has said 'yes'. Raahil's serial Resham Dankh on Star One has gone off air. Raahil who has been following the serial, says, "Because it is aired just before my serial Resham Dankh, I am familiar with the story and I did not think twice before accepting it. I was chilling out after completing Resham Dankh and I am glad Betiyaan... has come my way. A year back, I had been approached by producer Sunjoy Wadhwa but unfortunately I could not do their serial then."
So, how does he feel getting step in someone else's shoes? Raahil says, "Nowadays, replacement is a very small issue and every week, one or the other actor quits a serial or is replaced. I do not know what went wrong or what problem Mannish had. I did try to get in touch with him, but because I had lost my cellphone, I could not do that."
Considering that Raahil has almost always played the lead (Achanak, Hatim, Yeh Meri Life Hai), this role appears to be quite contrary to his persona of a polished and sophisticated charmer, especially when the theme is about six daughters. Clarifying the subject, Raahil states confidently, "I know I am not the protagonist but the temperament of Vedant is very versatile and has lots of range to emote. It is also different from the suitedbooted characters I have portrayed earlier. Vedant is shown as a 'tapori'—a vagabond and I will definitely bring my flavour to the role."
Coming back to Resham Dankh, was he disappointed with the way the track turned out or with its abrupt ending? Raahil explains, "To begin with, Resham Dankh's script was different—it was not run-of-the-mill stuff. The subject was off-beat, Aatish Kapadia's story is brilliant but unfortunately due to some reasons, the track drifted from the main storyline." It is rumoured that the production showed preference to Gujarati actors by giving them more footage but Raahil refutes the statement by saying, "They have always worked with theatre artists but I had absolutely no problem with them and as an actor, I got everything I deserved. Every production team has different views and to each his own."
