Drabble 1: Half of his Soul

He watched frozen as the mask finally fell off.

For that was what it was.

A mask.

A beautiful one. But a mask.

And with it, the talkative strange girl Vaijayanti disappeared as another woman took her place. Her silly dopey smile was replaced with a slightly curved set of lips, alluring and sensuous. Her inquisitive glance with laughter in them, sharpened with alien confidence that he had never seen in the gaze of any woman, in his entire life. Her long slender fingers deftly unraveled the gajra from her dark tresses and finally let them loose; wild and unbound. She wiped the white bindi on her forehead and simply straightened the pallu of her saree, letting it flow; billowing slightly in the wind.

The rest of the family too stood transfixed at the sight. His Kaka was staring at her with wide eyes and somewhere a sense of comprehension was settling in. Even Sampoorna, as her mind whirred, was finally making the connection. Bihari had already understood, and there he stood in the corner; his eyes wet as tears trailed down his cheek.

But all the while, Anirudh Roy Choudhury stood still. Like a fool that he had termed himself to be, he had waived off all the warning signs. He had overlooked her small slips, her devious hints, and the sudden allusions full of double meanings that she would often gift him with. His mind had hollered at him and his heart had tried to barge out of the cage he had trapped it in, but his stubbornness and his denial had blocked all those voices.

And now, they stood validated as she stood in front of him; her eyes bright and focused; piercing through him like a thousand knives shredding him into pieces.

“Bondita!” Sampoorna uttered her name, unsurely.

The woman in front of him responded to it with a blinding smile. “Hello, Sampoorna Didi! It has been a long time since I heard you call my name.”

He staggered back at the confusion and she whipped around to look at him. Something shifted in her gaze and his heart hammered. He felt a whirlwind of confusion surround him and a sense of panic began to grow. His long-buried emotions began to simmer and the lock on the cage started to weaken. He could almost feel it rise up in him; that terrifying onslaught of unnamable feelings that he had cut off from himself and shoved into the darkest corners of his consciousness. They began to slowly fill the gaping wound in him and the new emotions he had started to feel towards the strange woman who came to his life as a student; reached out to the earlier ones, entwining together to lift them up as they meshed and merged with each other. His eyes took in a new awareness they took her in; flitting across the familiar shape of her eyes and her smile that had now grown into a matured face.

His legs began to shake and his chest tightened. Sweat beads began to slowly trickle down his forehead and he felt his frame shiver. A weird sensation of rootlessness filled in him.

And then as his legs gave out, he sagged down; barely stopping himself from toppling headfirst to the floor.

Shouts and cries met his ears but his mind remained unfocused; dazed.

Nothing registered in him as hands caught him and managed to keep him afloat.

He was adrift.

A hand snaked around his wrist and grasped him tightly. The moment her hand touched him; it was as if his world had gone up ablaze. Her touch burned him, branding her existence on him and his soul. It speared straight into the battered cage and broke apart the lock around it.

His eyes opened and he saw her face close to him as she looked at him with concern in her eyes. Her pupils were blown wide and her brows furrowed as she blinked at him.

Her lips moved and his eyes flitted to them. “Sakha Babu; are you all, right?”

Her words fell on him like a downpour of the waters of a river dousing the entire carnage of the fire. They filled in him with the spirit of his earlier days, curling it in his veins as they took root.

He took in a shuddered breath and barely registering his actions; pulled her to him, smashing her straight onto his chest. She slammed onto him and he fell back hitting the wall. His back protested but he did not let go. Instead, he gripped her tightly and gently lay his head on the crook of her shoulders. Her frame relaxed and he wrapped his arms around her, reluctant to let her go. He could hear voices speaking and calling out his name but for the first time in eight years, he could care less.

He had tried. For God’s sake, he had tried.

But how do you remain away from half of your soul?

The answer was never.

And as he sat there, with her in his arms, he felt a sense of peace settle in him. She had an earthly smell about her with something floral that played with his mind. He took in a deep breath and sat there calmly; docile; without a worry in the world. There was no need now, to bother. No time, no deadline, no goal, and no other need for anything.

For she was there with him and he was there with her.

His wife, his student, his friend, and his sanity.

His goal, his aspiration, his dream, and his other half.

The rest of the world was necessary, no more.
