Hi, finally updated chapter 5. Life happened. Apologies for the very late update. Do comment if you had enjoyed the chapter.

Chapter 5: Jealousy

Throwing the last stone in her hand, Bondita turned around. She was startled by Anirudh who had been standing behind her. She lost her footing and was about to fall into the water. Moving on pure instinct, Anirudh took a step forward and pulled her into his arms.

Time stopped when his eyes met hers.

Bondita felt raw sensation prickling her skin where Anirudh fingers curled, holding her close to him. Bondita’s heart pounded in her chest. Bondita could feel Anirudh’s warm breath on her lips. Her stomach was in knots. She started nibbling her lips nervously.

Anirudh kept his eyes open, just to make sure this was not a product of his imagination. For the first time, he had draped his arms around Bondita’s small frame. Her parfum was intoxicating his senses, impairing his thoughts. Bondita had lowered her eyes, her eyelashes fluttering. He sneaked a peek at her lips. Her lips turned to deeper shades of pink as Bondita nibbled them. Anirudh took a deep breath. He mentally shrugged off the urge to reach out to her face and touch her lips.

Anirudh steadied her on her feet but kept his arm wrapped around Bondita’s waist. Bondita could feel his breath against her ears. Her body tingled with the sensation.

‘Do you want roshogulla for snack?’

Bondita eyes widen. Roshogullas! She had involuntary smile on her lips.

Anirudh chuckled. Some things just do not change forever.

Boudi!’

Bondita turned around, her eyes narrowed trying to recognize the familiar voice.

Her friends, Sujoth & Parvathy had left for Calcutta. Since the picnic, Bondita and Anirudh kept a cordial & polite stance with each other. They both walked on eggshells around each other avoiding any sensitive subjects. Today, they had driven to her mother’s village to visit the school they had set up for girls after an exhausting lengthy battle against villagers. A sense of pride rose as she walked around the school.

‘Som dada?’ Bondita gasped.

Som had grown taller than Anirudh, with his round glasses and curly hair was perfect likeness to her sasur, Binoy. In his hands he held a stack of books and what looked suspiciously a box of chalks.

Boudi! What are you doing here?’ Som looked at Bondita happily. Anirudh had send him a message earlier but he has asked his dada to keep his arrival as a surprise for Bondita.

When Anirudh abruptly sent Bondita to London to further her studies, the haveli fell into an uneasy silence. Som had always been irked by Bondita who he felt had forcefully barged into their peaceful and perfect lives. He had believed as Anirudh young wife, uneducated, crass, loud, and particularly her questioning habit, Bondita would never be his ideal Boudi, unlike Saudamini.

In the first months, Anirudh lost his zeal for life. Som knew his dada’s anger that flared at smallest things was due to Bondita’s absence. Binoy cluelessness with his eldest son behaviour would reprimand Anirudh before storming off muttering ‘...we need to bring that girl back!’ The letters from London was their saviour.

‘Som dada? What are you doing here? Are you teaching here, the kids?’ Bondita caught chalk dust between his fingers and some on Som’s black curly hair.

Som smiled. He was a well-respected journalist in Calcutta and on twice a month travels to Tulsipur to tutor the village children. He was a brilliant scholar, much to Binoy’s chagrin refused to take over his father’s business after graduating. Instead Som worked in a newspaper agency and tutored less privileged children in his free time.

Bondita’s frown on her forehead deepened slightly as she begrudgingly listened to Som. Anirudh rarely shared any news about the family in his letters. She on the other hand, was too hesitant to write to Som knowing he was not particularly fond of her. Batuk wrote in occasions but she was very aware of his careless attitude.

‘Bondita!!’ Anirudh waved and walked towards them.

‘Som, sorry I know you wanted to surprise her...Bondita wouldn’t have listened not to come even if I had stopped her...’ Anirudh flashed a wide grin at Bondita.

Som chuckled ‘Perfectly understood, dada. I will see you both back in haveli once I’m done here.’

The school bell rang for session change. Som hurried on to his class.

‘We too shall take our leave...’ before Anirudh could complete his sentence, Bondita had stomped towards the car.

Anirudh startled, ran after Bondita, stopping her just as she was struggling to open the car door.

‘Bondita. What are...’

Bondita looked at him with a pout, cheeks puffed, and her arms crossed. A small chuckle came out of him. She eyed him irritably. Anirudh suddenly had an urge to pinch her cheeks and cup them in his palms. Surprised he would even entertain such a thought, he quickly snuffed it out from his head.

‘Do you intend to go on looking like that? Or will you tell me how I had upset you now?’

‘Why you never wrote about anything when I was in London’

‘Never wrote about anything???’ Anirudh was puzzled by her accusation.

‘Yes! Nothing! You never wrote about Som dada being a journalist? He was even helping here in the school or...Batuk’s tournaments. Kaka Sasur illness. The pneumonia ….’ Bondita went on ranting about Anirudh nonchalant behaviour. It was not just the anger, but her heart grew heavier with realization Anirudh thought all these were of no importance to her. They were her family too.

A single tear slid down from her eye, followed by another drop. Soon, a steady stream of tears flowed its way down her cheek, releasing the sadness and sorrow that was held inside her.

Anirudh heart tugged seeing her tears. He grabbed her slender shoulders and brought her closer.

‘Bondita...I was wrong.’

Bondita breath stuttered. She looked into Anirudh’s warm eyes in disbelief. Anirudh was comforting her. He held her gaze.

‘I didn’t want you to miss Tulsipur. I did not want you to worry about Kaka. I wanted you not to be burdened by anything back home.’

I wanted you to be happy. Also, it will eventually lead to you wanting the answer to why I sent you away. I do not want to you to be hurt further. Anirudh smiled apologetically.

His left palm cusped her cheek and with his thumb wiped the tear drops under her eye.

‘I’m sorry.’

‘You never even wrote Mini didi got married...’ Bondita mumbled.

'Huh?’ Anirudh frowned.

As she grew up, Bondia started to have deeper understanding of relationships, Saudamini interactions with Anirudh’s had made her uncomfortable. Countless times, she had found Saudamini in the haveli wondering uninvited. Stalking Anirudh unbeknown to him. On handful occasions, Koehli had shown her, Saudamini with binoculars perched on her house terrace, prying into their bedroom, the study or terrace. Her clueless pati babu was always endearing and welcoming towards his childhood friend. Bondita held her breath behind pursed lips to steel herself against the memories flooding her mind as it did in many of the restless cold and lonely nights.

Bondita brushed Anirudh’s hands off her shoulder. She wriggled the door handle, slapping Anirudh's hands when he tried to help her. After struggling for little longer, she opened the door and quietly climbed into the car. Anirudh scratched his head baffled looking at Bondita.

He walked across the car to get to driver seat. For a second, he recognized the emotion that flashed in Bondita’s eye when she said Mini’s name. Her cheeks were flushed. He had felt her body shiver as Bondita struggled to keep herself in check. Bondita was jealous. Instead of feeling anxious about the new revelation, Anirudh was feeling contented and warm. As he started the engine, Anirudh was smiling to himself unknowingly.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anirudh was smiling sheepishly while driving back to the haveli. Bondita grew increasingly annoyed with him. Embarrassed with her earlier outburst, she paid no heed to his attempts to converse. She kept looking out of the car to distracted herself.
‘Anirudh, look there!’ Bondita pointed to a group of people. From the distance, she could make out a young woman in white saree dragged by a group of women. There were also a few men shoving an elderly couple. They were pleading for the young woman to be left alone.
Anirudh pressed on the accelerator and stopped the a few meters ahead of the commotion. Without waiting another second, Bondita opened the door and ran to help the distressed young woman.
‘Bondita! Wait!!’
