Recap from part 3:
When she got out of the Orange Line Metro in Vienna it was pouring cats and dogs. She took out her handkerchief from her bag and wiped her face. A faded voice echoed in her head "…You are so ancient Divya…..Who uses a handkerchief these days?..."
"I do" she murmured absentmindedly. She was startled by a thunder and came back to her senses. "What got into me today!" She ignited her engine and drove off..
Part Six: Serendipity?
Divya started driving towards home. It was raining heavily with sporadic thunder strikes. She saw the traffic light turn orange and hit the breaks hard. Unfortunately the road was slippery and her car skidded and hit the back of the car in front of her. There was a sharp crackling noise of metal touching metal.
Her Audi A4 was perfectly fine, so was she. She shuddered, thinking about the person in the front car. She immediately got out to apologize, to make sure the person in the car in front is unharmed and of course to exchange insurance information. The road was disserted at this hour. It was pouring cats and dogs. She saw the back of the Mercedes in front of her is severely damaged with both back lights hung broken.
She heard the driver, the lone passenger of the other car get out too.
"What the H***!!..oh Shit!!….." he started hurling other abusive expletives that are not recorded in the English dictionary as he examined the damage.
"Hey lady" he faced her with an attacking mood but stopped silent seeing her.
Divya could barely see in the dark and pouring rain, but she stood there stunned. This is a face she could never forget. "Sharad" she murmured under her breath! She was relieved that he was perfectly fine physically.
The sky was pierced with a thunder, lighting the surroundings for a second! Sharad also seemed to recognize her as he didn't finish his sentence and stared at her. The light turned green and red again. Both of them stood in the middle of the traffic-less road in heavy rain.
Sharad took a step towards her. "You--you look like someone I used to know! Did you by any chance go to Garfield High in Seattle?" His voice was softer and missed all the spite it had a moment ago.
She nodded feeling extremely grateful that it would be hard for him to read her facial expression in the rain.
"Divya?"
She nodded again. "I am so sorry Sharad, the car skidded. I am sure the insurance company would cover the cost of repair and all." She finished in a breath trying with all her might not to show any other emotions that have been dormant for ages.
"Hey, no worries, what's a little car accident between old friends." Sharad smiled his gorgeous dimpled smile. "I better call the towing company, the back tires are not spinning properly."
Divya felt really bad. "Why don't you try to move the car out of the way and I will call the police. We would need their report for damage claim from my insurance."
"Sounds good." Sharad went back to his car and managed to park it close to the street curb, turned his hazard lights on and came back." Divya in the meanwhile also moved her car behind Sharad's and dialed 911. The rain stopped. The police came and soon the formality was done.
Sharad was just staring at her without even blinking and was smiling to himself. The flashing of the hazard light made Divya look like a wet fairy and him a lost heavenly angel, more like Cupid with smiles as dangerous and deadly as his arrows. Divya tried hard not to make eye contact with him and not to read his face. Both of them were completely drenched.
She acted on guilt, "My house is on the next block. Why don't you wait at my place till the tow-truck gets here?"
"Only if you have coffee." He smiled back.
She nodded and both got in her car and went towards her house!
