Being bad is second nature for Kamya Punjabi. Not in real life, but on the small screen. Moving on from playing second leads to being the bad girl of television hasn't been a matter of choice for the bubbly 20-something. She openly admits that it has been tough bagging roles on television, but the "hard work has paid off". After Kyun Hota Hai Pyar, Astitva and Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki to the negative lead in Banoo Main Teri Dulhann, Kamya's five-year-old stint on television has been "very good." So much so, that she hasn't ever tried to take a Bollywood plunge. She surprises you with her candid confession that while mainstream Mumbai movies aren't really her cup of tea, she hasn't yet got an "offer yet. If I got to do a film like Omkara and Life in a Metro, I'd grab it now. Only roles of substance in meaningful films will tempt me to do films." Kamya was keen on becoming an air hostess during her college days. "I used to participate in fashion shows on a regular basis and was spotted for a music video at one such show. After the release of Richa Sharma's Kudi Pataka, a couple of acting offers from the film industry down south followed. Serials were next in the line and although initially it started off as masti, but once people started noticing me, I became addicted to the profession. And of course, the money was very good," she grins. Kamya describes herself as someone who's "very stubborn and totally dedicated to work. Money is important for me but I don't work only for money." Kamya claims, she'd give her eye-teeth to play, "the character of a mentally challenged person and a kothewali. I have always wanted to play these roles and in case someone offers them to me, I will accept the roles without even blinking an eyelid. For now I love playing the evil Sindura, complete with her wily machinations." |
