RECAP: Saagar gives the idea of having a get-together with Rohit and it is also revealed that Rohit and Divya were supposedly friends from college. At least that's what Divya tells Saagar. At home they're just winding up to go to bed and the doorbell rings.
Divya (while washing dishes): Who could that be?
Divya leaves the rest of the dishes in the sink, cleans her hands and throws on a hoodie and heads towards the door. She peeps through the little peep-hole and is shocked to see who it is. Rohit, is waqt? she thinks to herself. She takes a deep breath knowing that this might be a bit hard, but she has to do it. She opens the door and sees Rohit standing there with something in his hand.
Rohit (kinda hesitant): Woh... tumhara ya I don't know, maybe Saagar ka cellphone conference room mein reh gaya. Thought you might need it for tomorrow's presentation, so... -
Rohit is cut off by Saagar shouting in the background with toothpaste in his mouth, "Divya where's my towel?" and realises he may have just not come on the right time. Feeling a bit embarassed Rohit excuses himself, "Sorry, probably not the best time." and turns to leave but is stopped by Divya's hand on his arm. "Rohit?" He turns to face her but deep inside he knows this whole interaction is becoming too hard for him, and as far as he knew Divya, for her too. "Thanks." she manages to say. To what she was referring to, Rohit was unsure. But whatever it was, it wasn't going to make him stay here any longer. He shoots her a small yet friendly smile and leaves behind a flustered Divya who doesn't know what to make out of that situation.
She sighs a big one while she closes the door and rests her head on it, closing her eyes to process whatever just happened there. What was the awkwardness about? Her thoughts were interrupted yet again by Saagar coming out of the washroom with his towel around his neck wearing a t-shirt and sweat pants, holding the toothpaste in one hand. "This toothpaste is disgusting. Never buy it again." Turning to see him in that situation she's a bit confused but just shakes her head and turns to head towards the sink to continue on the dishes again.
Seeing her just walk away like that without a response now makes Saagar seem a bit confused, walks towards the living room (which is by the way connected to the kitchen). "What was that about?" he asks her, now arriving at the kitchen counter. Divya who really isn't in the mood for a useless discussion just brushes it off, like she cleaned the food off the plates she was washing, "Nothing. Just. I'm tired." A bit worried Saagar walks up to her and checks for fever on her forehead "Are you sure that's it?" Getting a bit frustrated she drops her plate in the sink and replies sternly, "Yes, that's it. I'm just really tired, okay?" Feeling a bit offended he backs off, "Toh itna gussa kyun ho rahi ho? Badtan par gussa kyun nikaal rahi ho?" Now Divya realises that she may have gotten a bit too agitated takes a light sigh and calmly rests her arms on the counter and looks him in the eye. "I'm sorry. All the work stress is just getting to me because its the end of the week. That's all." She gives him a soft smile, "Nothing to worry about."
Still not convinced, but not wanting to upset more he just slowly walks away, holding his towel in his hand now. "If there's something disturbing you, you DO know that we can talk about it, right?" Now Divya seems like she has reached the epitome of her tolerance. "What do you mean by that? Mein tumhe keh rahi hoon ki koi baat nahi hain magar tum ho ki baat chodte hi nahin." Her voice rasing by the second. Realising that her tone is changing and hence her attitude he stops in his tracks towards the room and turns towards her. He puts his towel on the sofa and crosses his arms around his chest. "What's your problem?" he says, with no expression.
Divya who was just shocked at his reply decides to keep her cool, keeps her last plate in the dish basin and washes her hands, turning towards Saagar with her hands at her hips. "Why are we turning this into an argrument?" she asks him, questioningly. Deciding this time not to let her anger get the best of her, Saagar replies "How is this becoming an argument? I just asked you a simple question and you freaked out like I had invaded your privacy or something. Before that I just told you how horrible the toothpaste was and you basically ignored me and walked away." Now Divya seems even more amazed after what he just said. "Omg. Is this seriously about the toothpaste? Cos if it is then fine, I won't buy it anymore. Are you happy?"
"No, that won't make me happy! Because there is definitely something on your mind which you aren't telling me and I can practically read it off your face now. And add to that your behaviour just these few minutes ago." Divya crosses her arms and takes a step forward. "If there's something I'm thinking about, zaroori nahin hai that I share every little bit with you?" she shouts back and realises she may have mistakingly crossed the line.
Pausing for a second after her response, Saagar is just amazed by what she thinks. He tries to find words to say but can only manage to put on a sarcastic smile, resting his hand on the counter trying to figure what's happening. Then coldly replies, "Of course you don't need to tell me everything. We dont' have a relationship like that do we." He gives her a cold stare and begins walking back to the bedroom with his towel in his hand.
I can't believe he just said that! Divya thinks to herself. Now she had had enough. "Fine! Do you wanna know what's in my head? Then, listen. While you were in your little washroom brushing your teeth Rohit dropped by. Why? To return your cellphone which YOU must have left in the conference room today. (points to the cellphone on the table) And that's when you decide to shout, 'Divya where's my towel?' making the situation as embarassing as it could ever be for me." She tries to imitate him when he aksed for the towel, and at this point Saagar is standing by the room with his arms in his pockets, leaning on the wall with a look of frustration. "And above that you even told him we were trying to get pregnant! And what bothers me in all this? The fact that you cannot even take a second to think what I must be feeling about it all. Tum usse kuch bhi batao. Lekin yeh baat kehne ki kya zaroorat thi?" She ends her lecture with a questionable look yet again.
"So that's what's bothering you?" is his response, once again, with coldness embedded in it. He starts walking towards her as if a predator pouncing on his prey about to attack any minute now, but this time the prey is all aware. "If this is about what I told him earlier then I'm sorry, okay? It just slipped out considering that he was a father as well. And besides, he seemed to be pretty cool about it, didn't he?" And then he remembered Divya telling him that they were friends from college. "And plus, he's your friend right? So why worry, huh?" By the time he had said the last line he was only a foot away from Divya. Divya, now nearly in tears just looks away, with a response that doesn't really tell Saagar anything about the current situation. "Nahi samjhoge tum. What I, as a woman feel, you'll never get." wiping away a tear.
He didn't want that reaction. Suddenly feeling responsible for seeing her this way he takes another step towards her and says calmly, "Then talk to me about it. Let me in on your fears and insecurities," gently holding her arms, now only inches away from her. Now turning her head back Divya looks into his eyes and sees the affection and care. Looking into those eyes told her that he meant what he was saying and maybe what he said earlier was just a result of a fit of anger and totally unintentional. She slowly hugged him, reciprocating his feelings and sobbed away quietly, and unknowingly yet knowing it to be so right to do so in the arms of this man. "I'm sorry Divya, please don't cry..." Divya knew that it wasn't going to be easy to just 'stop crying' but she tried. "Promise me, you'll always be there for me no matter what."
Hugging her back and caressing her hair, he replied in the affermative, "I promise."
"And I'm sorry about the toothpaste." Looks up at him managing a smile through the tears, "And I swear it wasn't on sale, if thats what's going through your head." They both share a small laugh and head off to sleep.
Precap: - Divya and Saagar are off to Toronto to meet Saagar's family and Sameer joins them. Guess who else is joining them?
RECAP: Read above.
The next morning Saagar and Divya wake up at different times. Saagar wakes up and notices that Divya is already awake since the spot next to him is empty. He goes to brush his teeth and continues to get ready, coming to the living room dressed for work. There he finds Divya standing at the counter making breakfast, but realizes that she hasn't changed for work.
Saagar: Aren't you gonna get ready for work?
Divya (puts the mug on the table, calmly replies): Umm, actually I was thinking of staying home today. (looks at Saagar for his reaction) If that's okay.
Saagar: Sure, I have no problem with that. You're feeling okay though, right?
Divya (shoots him an assuring look): Yeah, I'm fine. No need to worry.
Saagar nods in the affirmative and the two sit down for breakfast. Oddly so it was in silence. No real breakfast table conversations, just the sound of chewing cereal or toast and gulping down cups of tea or coffee. Finally after what seemed like forever but was actually only 10 minutes Saagar left for work.
As he exited their apartment, Divya closed the door behind him and turned around, resting her back on the door. No goodbye. No goodbye kiss. No hug.
Trying to avert her mind she cleaned up the table and focused her mind on why really she stayed home today. She had to get her thoughts together on where she was headed. Where she was headed in life, in the sense.
Last night she really thought about what she was doign in life right now. Saagar had proposed to her already. Marriage was on their cards. And all of a sudden her past had jumped right infront of her at a moment she least expected. People always say that your past defines who you are. But was that always the case?
Divya had tried really hard to forgot what had happened in the past and mend all the broken relationships earlier. Then all of a sudden why did Rohit have to jump back into the picture? She had forgotten all they had. The past 4 years that she's spent, trying to get rid of his memories just weren't helping. And as a matter of fact, they were of no use now. Rohit was gonna be a part of her everyday life, now that he'd become their partner in business. But that didn't mean she would have to see him everyday, would it? No, she could avoid him as much as possible... right ... ?
NO, Divya! a voice called within her. It was reality and you had to face it. Even if you didn't see him everyday that didn't mean there was going to be no bitterness between you two. Remember how he treated you the other day in the elevator? He called you a "changed woman" ! And you perfectly know what that meant. She suddenly felt so disgusted in herself for thinking about it.
Divya, accept it. You really have changed. What were you like in college, back in the days, and what have you turned into now? She sighed a big one as she leaned her head back on the couch, thinking about Rohit, again.
Wait. Rohit had a son? She suddenly jerked up in a sort of epiphany. Rohit had a son who was 4 years old. The face that was relaxed and calm only 10 seconds ago suddenly had a look of horror and distraught.
Suddenly her cellphone vibrated and soon began to rang. She went over to it and saw the caller ID, Rohit Dubey. She looked up in disbelief and wondered if she was imagining things. She looked down on the screen again and noticed that it was, infact, Rohit calling. What took forever to answer, was only 5 seconds but Divya managed to have the guts to answer his call. Shakingly, she put it to her ear. "Hello?" "Hello, Divya? It's Rohit. I need to ask a favour from you. I'm really stuck in this presentation right now and I need someone to pick Avinash up from school. If you're not too busy can you please pick him up? Just bring him to office and I'll handle the rest. You still there?" He had said so much without letting her speak that it reminded her of times when they were together in college. "Divya if you can't go then just let me know, please. I don't have all day." Suddenly realising that he was waiting for her reply, she said that it shouldn't be a problem and took down the address and said that she'd leave right away. "Thanks, Divs." was his answer. She was just about to hang up when she heard him say that and immediately froze, on the spot. Her eyes started getting moist but realising that she had to get going told him it was no problem, and blinked those tears away.
When Divya got to the address, the first thing that struck her mind was: I've never seen this boy, how will I recognize him?! Just then she got the idea of asking the teacher in charge of the kindergarteners. The teacher instructed her to the section for morning kindergarteners. Divya walked over to the group of children standing in a line waiting to be dismissed. There was yet another teacher standing beside, so she asked her about Avinash this time.
"Avinash Dubey?" "Uhm, yeah. Avinash Dubey. His father has sent me, Rohit Dubey." "Ma'am Avinash ko toh kisse ne already pick up karliya. He's gone with someone else."
What? He already left? With who? Feeling a bit paniced she immediately dialed Rohit's cell. The first time she called, it went to voicemail. The second time she called it went to voicemail again. She cursed him under her breath. The third time she called he finally picked up. "Why weren't you picking up the phone?" Surprised at her sudden reaction, "I was in a meeting" very sternly. "Are you on your way to the office? My meeting is over now." "No, I'm not on my way to office because the teacher here says that Avinash already left. With someone else." She emphasized the last part because it was the cause of her worry. Rohit on the other hand immediately stood up in his chair. "Left with someone else? Who?" "I don't know, that's why I've called you!" Divya replied.
Sensing the worry in her voice, he told her to calm down and not panic. He said that try looking around, maybe the teacher mistakened him for another child. But this attempt was to no avail. He could not believe what was going on. Avinash was a smart kid, he'd raised him teaching him not to talk with strangers no matter what they offer you. He was smart enough not to just go off with anyone who offered him chocolate or whatever. Something here was very wrong, and it was very bad.
Rohit braced himself for what he was going to say next. "Divya, we have nothing to do but call the police." Thinking about calling the police, Divya began sobbing thinking where Avinash could be. "And don't panic. Keep your cool. I'm going to call the police and you stay there until they come. I'll be reaching in a bit." And with that their conversation came to an abrupt end and Divya did as she was told.
What a turmoil. She kept her composure and went and waited in the car, in seclusion. She rested her head on the steering wheel and cried her heart out. Not simply because Avinash was missing. If anyone else saw her crying like this over another's child they'd think it was wierd. But that's not only why she was crying. She was weeping her heart out because the very feeling which she feared to be true may just be the truth. The feelings that she had just felt upon realising that Avinash's safety was in danger was the pinical for her epiphany.
Her mind traced back to 4 years back, when she was only 22 years old.
Rohit kept pacing up and down the hospital's hallway while Aarti sat on the chairs at the side with Tusshaar a few seats down. "Rohit calm down, the doctor said it was going to be a normal delivery." But Rohit was not the one to calm down so easily. Yes, the doctor did say that there should be no complications in the delivery. But this wasn't any ordinary pregnancy. Rohit and Divya had kept themself chaste from each other, and because of Aarti's demand of raising a family they had both chose to go the scientific way. Aarti had realised she couldn't have kids after her miscarriage in her marriage with Rohit. And at that time Rohit's father was ill. He constantly pressed that he get to see his grandchild(ren) before breathing his last. But he was unaware of Aarti's problem. That's when they decided to adopt. But Aarti was admant that she wanted Rohit's baby. Not that she had a problem with adopted children, but she wanted to see a child growing up who would constantly remind her of Rohit.
Then stepped in the problem of finding a reliable surrogate. They searched and searched but to no avail. You couldn't just let any woman have their baby. That's when Divya stepped in. She could see in Rohit's eyes the love that he had to have a child of his own. Stepping on her own wishes and dreams she decided to become the long-awaited surrogate and after a lot of convincing, Tusshaar and Rohit both agreed. They went the scientific way because they knew anything besides that would completely ruin the sanctity of Rohit's marriage.
Nine months was a long time. But both Rohit and Aarti were by Divya's side along with Tushaar every step of the way.
But it was right before Divya went into labour that everything had flipped on its back. Two nights before, Rohit had gone out of town for the day and was expected back later that night or latest the next morning. Tushaar had work to go to so basically Divya was home alone. That was when Aarti stopped by. At first Divya thought that she may have come to give Divya her support, but soon she found she was completely wrong.
She saw as Aarti slowly pulled out bundles and bundles of bills from her purse, unimaginable in number of rupees. She look confused as Aarti set them on the table and sighed. "Yeh lo, aur dafaa ho jao humari zindagi mein si." she sternly said. Divya continued looking at her as the expression from her face changed from confusion to embarassment to shock. "Yeh... yeh kya keh rahi ho tum Aarti?" Aarti shot her another cold look and replied, "Tumhe hindi samajh nahin aati? I said to take this money and get out of my life!"
Those words came like swords at her heart, thought Divya. Is this what she waited nine months for? To be thrown money at her face and be ordered to leave, for the rest of her life? Earlier they had come to the conlcusion that she would not need any money because this wasn't a job for her. It was something completely different, something unexplainable. From friend to friend. But clearly this lady did not understand. She had just humiliated Divya making her look like this was her profession or something. And Divya was about to burst. Not in anger. In tears. Any moment now.
"Look Aarti. This was never what we had discussed before. And even know I'm telling you I don't want all this. If this is because of something I may have said or done then I'm sorry." Aarti looked back at her in rage ready to jump back. "Don't tell me you're sorry! I want you out of my life! That's it! I've had too much now! I can't see you two everyday like this. You two get so close my blood boils with jealousy! And why wouldn't it? I'm his wife for pete's sake! Only I have a right on him!" In the midst of their conversation Aarti began realising that Divya may had just started getting labour pains. She clenched her abdomen and slightly winced, taking a seat on the couch behind. She started taking deep breaths and all the while was flustered to hear the accusations Aarti was throwing at her. "Aarti he's the father. If the baby kicks obviously he's going to want to be the first one to feel it." She said in between breaths. Aarti realised that she wasn't taking this as serious as she thought. And least expected, she began sobbing and burst into uncontrollable tears. Something probably Divya hadn't seen coming. "I just want you gone, okay?! I don't have to strength to see the two of you like this anymore! Seeing that unspoken bond of trust, reliabilty and honesty makes me feel so empty within because I will never be able to take your spot in life. Never. And I'm saying all this as a vulnerable woman. Not as some idiot who can't bear her husband's friend."
And as they may have imagined the worst, Divya shrieked in pain shaking Aarti and possibly the rest of the floor. "OMG! OMG." Divya looked upto Aarti as she looked scared and nervous. "My water just broke!" she tried to sound as calm as possible. But obviously it didn't help because as the pains grew stronger and longer, so did Divya's screams. Soon Aarti had called the paramedics, called Rohit and Tusshaar and they were at the hospital.
At the hospital Aarti completely flipped the story of what lead to Divya's early contractions, 360 degrees. She made it seem like Divya was eager for the money at the last moment and would've promised to leave. Unrelentlessly he managed to pull himself together after being told the supposed story by his wife, Rohit was delighted with the birth of his son. He was the happiest man in the world. Remembering a few months ago when asked by Divya if he'd thought of any names for the baby, he hadn't thought of any back then. But Divya had, and that was Avinash. That's why his little bundle of joy was named Avinash, after what his mother wanted him to be named.
Due to a turn and twist of events Divya never came to knew that she had actually given birth to a boy. She was "under-the-table" told that she had given birth to a still-born. Not wanting to believe it she angrily screamed at the doctors and nurses saying that they were all a bunch of liars who snatched a baby from his mother because of a few bucks.
Circumstances turned out so that Divya ended up leaving the city and tried her best to move on. But nothing would work. Finally her brother Tusshaar convinced her to continue her studies and hopefully that would get her mind off and away from it. In an environment with new people and a new place, it was inevitable that she'd form some new memories that would hopefully erase her old ones.
Her mind raced back to the present as she still clutched her steering wheel and heard a tap on the door to see two policemen standing by it.
