In an overpopulated country like India where the government and other agencies are trying to pursuade peaople to limit children to one or two without using any coercion I think it is the duty of every Indian to help in this direction in whatever way possible. This very much includes serials and what they portray. Everyone is not part of a developed permissive Western society which by definition of permissive permits the society. Here in India with so many below poverty line and Illiterate . Just signing your name is not reading and writing and most parts of India steeped in diehard traditions.Bandini is certainly giving wrong signals. Let your serials be responsible to society and the prevailing conditions .Specially when you know so many are watching. Each one of us who is an Indian has a duty to care.Whatever our Western counterparts may feel. We have to feel for our own problems. All this big talk of individual choice and freedom is not above the interest of all and FAMILY PLANNING is a must for India and in the interest of India and its masses . The second most populace country in the world. We are in the throes of a population explosion. Please take note of this.No individual freedom can be considered above this It is not a question of not thinking about yourself and your independance Its a question of thinking of others---India and its teeming millions. The interest of the masses is not subordinate to any interest And the clarion call is Family Planning. Serials fictional or real must veer towards propagating this even if they have not been entrusted with such responsibilities directly. As an Indian I feel this and that is why I strongly recommend that all concerned give more thought to this aspect even if it means the loss of some individual choices

Are you not condradicting yourself? You say that India is an over populated country and every citizen should recognise the responsibility of not contributing further to this problem and still say that Bandini is sending wrong signals. Atleast the current track is sending the 'right' signals by your definition because the protagonist is going in for a sterilisation operation (voluntarily) even before she has given birth to a single kid. That is family planning of the highest order, considering that her husband has already done the 'damage' of spawning five kids from his earlier wife. While I do not subscribe to her view, I find her action much in line with what you seem to advocate.

Opti, good to see you again. I love your answer because it is exactly what i was just typing in! To me this post is meaningless and extremely contradictory where it tends in most places to compare strawberries and durians.
Forgive my words Sumiko! i do not find the post meaningful.
Opti, great to see you here!

This post seems like a cut and paste of something that doesn't make any sense. The only thing I got from reading this post was "Does the writer understand what /he she had just written?' I wld suggest reading Silas Marner by George Elliot for those who want to understand the meaning of having a child.

Thanks Chalia for the welcome. I was away for a week and realise that I have not missed much. In fact I have saved myself from some meaningless nonsense.

My dear friends
Santu has not gone into sterilisation as a result of any lofty thoughts for her country and its plight of overpopulation but out of a sense of duty of being just and fair with her family. There is a lot of difference in what I mean and what you say. Can't score brownie points like that. Understand what i am trying to say. Look at the larger picture .Just bec she goes for a sterilisation the signal that Bandini has unwittingly sent remains. It does not get remedied. After 5 children Dharamdas does not have the responsibiliy or the maturity to think of enough is enough in context of our population problem. Nor does he want to teach his young wife any of these matters in this context.,'It is a sad commentry on the Malik of Dharampur.
