I'm a lurker in these forums and have just started watching Bandini. After watching the episodes from
the last few days and basically catching up on the story so far, I could not help but comment. Why do
we enjoy see young Indian women being abused? Don't get me wrong, I love my soppy love stories,
not bothered by age differences and I like Ronit Roy.
DM-Santo marriage is the classic exploitation that happens in our rural (and urban) areas to poor uneducated young women. DM is being protrayed as this kind and just man, so did this just 50 year old man with 5 grown up children have to marry a 18 year old? He could have got her married to Hiten. Let's say he married under other duress (also I now remember Hiten was abroad), why does he treat Santo like she or her family tricked him into this marriage. He has absolutely no respect for her even though she never chose to be his wife. He belittles her by calling her "chokri". Does he call his own kids by that name? The list goes on...
I would love for the writers to explore Santo's character undergo a metmorphosis where she awakes to the injustice done to her and fights for her rights. I would also like DM's character when he realizes his folly in marrying such a young girl and lets her free from the bondage of marraige to choose a partner on her own free will. Of course, we will not mind if she chose to remain with DM - the man, her husband, not her malik.
This will do justice to creatives/production houses saying that they would like to explore social issues.
I would love to read what all you lovely people out there have to say.
