Sooner the better like as soon as the child is old enough to understand 6-7 years perhaps.
He may take it badly but when he knows that his adopted parents are going to be with him through thin and thick he may get adjusted to the truth.
It also depends on how the parents tell the truth about his/her birth parents.That part should be sugar coated perhaps especially when the child is young.
