Chapter 28
Breaking the hug, Prats turned back to draw the mother and child into her hug. Picking the child up, kissing his round cheeks a dozen times, she turned to Sid, holding her hand put to draw him close to her. "Sid, this is Jagan, his wife, Kangan, and Manohar. And all, this is Siddhant, my fianc." She watched with a smile as both men sized each other before stretching out their hands for a firm shake. Jagan grinned and ruffled her hair, "We know, Muniya <small bird>; Bapusa just told us..." Turning to Siddhanth, he smiled, "Don't get bullied by my family, Siddhanth. Do what you feel is right." Sid shook his head in bemusement, "Yeah, my head spins sometimes, but at the moment, I am grateful to your family. They have been rather instrumental in getting me what I want."
Walking into the hospital, Siddhanth went over to where Bhoomiji was sitting. "Sir, with your permission, I would like to marry your daughter, as soon as possible. I am going to call my parents to whichever hospital we are taking Dadisa, so you can discuss the hows and whats." Hugging Sid close, Bhoomiji said, "I knew when I saw you that you were the right one for my daughter. Thank you Siddhanth for understand Prats as you do."
Keeping Prats close to him, Sid dialed his mom's number, "Maa, I have some good news for you. You wanted somebody to tie me down, didn't you? Well, here, speak with that someone." Shoving the phone into a surprised Prat's hands, he stood back to watch her mobile face's expressions change as his mother bombarded her with questions. Chuckling, he took the phone back from her, "Maa, she is Pratishtha, a social service worker from Jaitser. She is 25, height about 5 foot nothing, weight? Hmm, let's see... maybe about 45 kilos! Oh, you didn't ask that? Sowwie... And yeah, she is a divorcee, but before you get your insides all tied in a knot, remember that she is the love of my life, and if I marry, it will only be her." As Prats smiled shyly, he flicked his finger at her cheek, explaining that since Prats Daadisa had to be operated in Jaipur, they would all meet there and that the marriage would have to be as soon as possible. He handed the phone back to Prats, watching avidly as she listened to his mother.
"Beta, I am so glad that my son has chosen you. I must admit that a divorcee would not have been my choice, but my son has never gone with my choice. I am just so glad that he has finally found someone who he wants to marry. His love for you is reflected in every word. I am so looking forward to meeting you and welcoming you to our family."
As news of Daadisa's successful operation trickled in, Sumita and Geeta took Prats in to give her the good news. Jagan came up to Sid and said, "Let's have a chat, Sid." Walking out to the canteen, where they ordered a cup of tea each before going to sit on the wall, Jagan said, "I don't know what Prats has told you about me, Sid, but I am sure you know some of the background." Sid smiled, "She did tell me that things didn't work out between you two, Jagan, and some of the reason why." Jagan sighed, "I have often wished I could turn the clock back, and not have hurt the girl who, till date, is my best friend. But, you know what, I just couldn't turn the girl I grew up with into my wife. My mind didn't allow that..." Sid laughed, "I am thankful to your mind. How would I have got Prats in my life then?"
Slapping Sid on his shoulder, Jagan said, "You know, I tried several times to introduce Prats to good guys, successful, handsome guys. But there was a wall around her. That is my biggest regret, that I turned such a warm, loving girl into a wary, mistrustful one. But, you know what, I get the feeling that you have already drilled a small hole in that wall. I heard sparks of the earlier Prats in my phone calls with her over the past few weeks. And from all accounts, she is a different person when she is with you or talking of you. I hope we can be friends, Siddhanth. I would love for the four of us to get along well... Ah, Kangan, there you are!"
Smiling at the two men, Kangan gave her hand to Jagan to be hoisted up. "Siddhant, I want to tell you something. When I first got married, I was confused about Jagan's and Pratsi's relationship. Given their history, they should have hated each other. But they didn't, and both played an equally part in each other's lives. I was jealous at first, but gradually I realized that Jagan didn't love her, not in a man-woman way. As I got to know Prats more, I started loving her too. Who wouldn't, tell me? Her innocence, her soft strength, her all-encompassing love for those who she really loves... no one else has those qualities. You are a lucky, lucky man, Siddhant. However, you will have to accept that Jagan is a constant in Prats life. They are besties, and will always remain so."
Prats ran up to them with Manohar in her lap. "What are you three conspiring against me? I know all your secrets, remember that!" As she tossed a squealing Manohar into the air a couple of times, tickling and covering his laughing face with kisses, Sid was surprised to feel a twinge of longing deep in his stomach. "What was up with him now? Kids? Get real, Sid. First get the pheras done..."
As the ambulance zoomed to Jaipur, a convoy followed. The senior Singhs in a Bolero, with Manohar with them. And Sid and Jagan in the front seat of the Jaguar, with the ladies stuffed in the back seat. There was no point in going in separate cars. As Daadisa was admitted to the best heart specialty hospital in Jaipur, where all prior arrangements had been done, someone tapped Sid on his back. Wheeling around, Sid hugged the tall, dashing man with white sideburns, "Dad! Am so glad you are here... And maa too!" The statuesque lady in a light blue cotton sari, hugged him before looking around. "Ah, this must be my Sid's Prats. The description is just right!" Opening her arms wide, she took Prats into a warm hug, "I've finally got the daughter I always wanted." Looking over at Sid, she smiled at him, "Thank you Sid, for completing my family."
