PART 2
Ganga knew somewhere in the back of her mind that she was walking but the fact didn't make a great impression on her. She was conscious of the warm blessed weight of her precious Mannu in her arms but even that didn't seem quit real. She felt curiously detached, aware of the world with its chattering people and buzzing vehicles around her but nothing penetrating through that thick fog which was slowly covering and threatening to suffocate her
It was over. That period of happiness, that time of wonder and new discoveries, that time of friendship and love, everything was over . Image after image flashed through her mind. One face in particular
It was over. No more laughing with him, no more being teased by him, no more worshipping and loving him from afar. She would never again see his tall solid person enter the room, reassuring her with his mere presenc e.No more would she be able to sense him nearby by that unique scent of his. No more would she look upon him and Mannu playing and laughing together and feel herself the most blessed woman in the world
It was over
Mannu let out a loud wail jolting her. Turning towards him she felt a sudden wetness on her face. She gazed upwards bewildered. How funny…she hadn't noticed the rain even though it had evidently been going on for some time as evinced by her drenched clothes and the empty roads. She turned to her poor child who clung to her, looking up into her face as though waiting for her decision
Ganga took a deep brath. Enough. She had a child who depended on her and for his sake she had to move forward. Tucking her Mannu beneath his blanket firmly Ganga ran towards a dhaba a few meters away from where she stood
It was a dark dingy place, empty except for the owner who has was standing at a corner washing dishes. She debated within herself for a minute and then slowly approached him
"Bhaisa…I…Can you offer us shelter for tonight?" she stammered out "We have nowhere to go"
He turned. He was a dark surly looking individual but there was something about him that reassured her and told her that he atleast didn't belong to the sort of men who would prey on a helpless woman
He glanced at her and Mannu and then gave a quick nod before turning back to his pots
Ganga gave a sigh of relief before continuing haltingly " I… I'm afraid I don't have any money but I can work for you and pay my share"
His hands stilled before he turned, gestured to the sink heaped with dirty dishes and then moved off into the back rooms of the dhaba
Huh. He evidently wasn't a great talker. Either ways he had let them stay here for free and she was grateful. She rolled up her sleeves and got to work.
It was still raining heavily outside . Mannu crept up to her side and she playfully splashed some water onto him. He giggled and splashed some back. Sh laughed before the expression on his face suddenly reminded her of a similar scene not too long ago
How often had she walked into find her Mannu wearing the exact same expression as he played with him. How often had she seen him toss Mannu up in the air to elicit the exact same reaction? She closed her eyes, frantically trying to block out the memories as a sudden painful ache tightened around her chest threatening to squeeze the breath out of her. She couldn't do this , Oh God…..
Bang! A loud sound startled her. Opening her eyes she saw that Mannu had thrown a pan off the sink from where it had rolled down into the road. Sighing at her unruly child's antics she hitched up her skirt and ran into the road shielding her face against the rain with her pallu
She had almost reached it when there was a sudden screech of tires . She was conscious of a blinding light before she found herself flying into the darkness
PART 3
Jagya pushed with all his might on the accelerator willing the jeep to go faster. It was past 1am and he still hadn't found Ganga and Mannu. He had enquired at all the bus stops, at the railway station, at women's hostels, at any and every place there was the likelihood that Ganga would go and had drawn a blank at each of these establishments. Almost sick with fear he pushed down on the pedal frantically , praying with all his might that Ganga would materialize in front of him right now
What he wouldn't give to have her sitting beside him now. What he wouldn't give to be holding Mannu in his arms now ? What he wouldn't give to see that shy lovely smile bloom on her face as he teased her. Jagya had never prayed as hard as he did now before in his entire life
How could she have left him like that ? He thought, a wave of fury engulfing him. Didn't she realizee what she and Mannu meant to him? Didn't she realize that one smile from them mad his day? Didn't she realize that coming home and seeing them waiting for him filled him with an indescribable feeling of comfort and happiness?
Jagdish Bhairon Singh had never been given much to introspecting. If he had then he would have realized that at this moment , his thoughts were veering into dangerous territory , territory which he had forbidden himself after he had committed unpardonable sins in its name . At present he was too far gone in panic and terror for the word "love" to even cross his mind
She had to be here somewhere...why wasn't she coming in front of him...Where was she?!!!!
The jeep suddenly came to a halt without warning nearly throwing him against the windshield. With an impatient exclamation he ripped off his seatbelt and jumped out to check when a small movement caught his eye. He stared at it in disbelief before realizing its identity
Waves of relief and joy coursed through him as he moved forward to the slight figure bent against the rain as she tried to pick something up from the ground. H started walking towards her when without warning a car came in from nowhere and smashed into her
There was a moments silence when Jagya realized two things
On- the woman hurtling towards him was necessary for his continued existence
Two- if he didn't catch her in time he could end up losing her forever
A/N: Last part up. Not my best work sorrieee. I will try to come up with a better one next time😳. Thank you everyone who has liked and commented. I really really really appreciate it😃
PART 4
Ganga opened her eyes slowly, only to realize that she was currently in Doctor Saab's arms his strong arms securing her firmly to his side. He was breathing heavily as if he had just run a marathon and there was a wild unfocused look in his eyes that scared her "Doctor Saab" she said tentatively. His arms tightened about her but there were no other signs of response
Flashback
Jagya ran as he had never run before in his entire life . She was flying too fast and too high. Cursing under his breath he willed his aching muscles to push him forward begging anyone who would listen to get him there in time . With horror he realized that she was hurtling towards the ground and in another second she would be hitting the footpath. NO,NO,No! he dived to his left desperately, and hit the ground holding a warm familiar body in his arms
End of Flashback
Ganga wriggled in his arms breaking Jagya out of his stupor. He suddenly sat her on the ground with a jerk and began frantically checking her for injuries.
"Doctor Saab" she protested
He paid her no heed and continued his examination asking her" Ganga, are you hurt? Do you feel dizzy? Can you see? Did you hit your head?"
Ganga managed a wobbly laugh and said" Doctor Saab, I'm perfectly fine. No I'm not hurt, I don't feel dizzy, Yes I can see and no I didn't hit my head because you shielded me from the impact with your body, I.." she trailed off suddenly shy
Jagya suddenly realized that both he and Ganga were drenched and siting on the ground in a rather compromising position with the rain still coming down in droves around them. He looked at her. With her bedraggled wet hair, and streaks of mud on her face she shouldn't have looked the least bit appealing. But in that moment, as she sat there on the pavement wearing that adorably confused and embarrassed expression of hers, he couldn't imagine anything more beautiful or desirable. She was wet from head to toe and he could feel the heat of her body radiating through her clothes. Startled and horrified at the nature of his thoughts he jerked up and offered his hand to help her
" Come, let's get Mannu and go home" he said brusquely as she dusted her skirts. She looked up at him slowly and shook her head. That tiny gesture of denial sparked up the anger which had temporarily disappeared during the past few minutes.. " Ganga" he said in a warning tone.
She still shook her head, her lips trembling but her chin stubbornly up
Damnation. He stepped forward in one smooth motion and asked her in a tightly controlled house
" What do you mean you can't? It is your home and you need to come home"
"It isn't my home! " she broke out trying to twist herself from his grasp. He held fast. "It is a place which offered me shelter when I needed it and to which I gave nothing but misery and danger. I will never come back there or see any of you again!"
"Ganga for your sake I hope you never repeat those words again" Jagya roared, all control broken. " It might be easy for you to forget us but it definitely isn't easy for us to forget you or Mannu and there is nothing you can do or say that is going to make me let you and Mannu walk out of our life ...EVER"
Ganga wrenched her hand from Jagya's grasp. Openly crying now she screamed at him" Why? Why should I come back to you? Why on earth aren't you letting me and my child leave you in peace and go away? Why do you want us with you?"
Jagya stared at her, missing the contact with her hand . A host of answers circled in his mind but only one made sense in that moment and only one was the truth. He stepped forward, slowly this time, and taking her by her shoulders said clearly and distinctly so that she wouldn't miss a word " Because I need you"
