Anjy, since you guys were talking about Ganga Maa...she's not a single woman...she was married to King Shantanu from Mahabarat and is the mother of Bhishma...

She came from the feet of Lord Vishnu and was collected into the kamandalu of Bramha...then Shivjee accepted her in his 'jataa' so she could descend onto the Earth without destroying it. So in that way she is the constant companion of Shivjee.
