Chapter 8:

Anandi stood dumfound at the new information she just received-----Shiv had not eaten since she fasted!! Her mind was in a whirlwind Why hasn't he eaten? Just because I was fasting? Why did he have to pain himself for me? All these questions pointed to only one answer, and yet again Anandi was scared to confront it. Shiv's gesture filled Anandi's heart with a strange warmth, she felt an upsurge of emotion thinking about his action. Scenes of her married life with Jagya started flashing through her mind. The numerous times that she had fasted for Jagya's well being, Jagya had never cared to miss his food for her, in fact he had never even cared if she ate or not. She would always eat on his jhoothi plate. Her meal would start with his leftovers---on a plate with half eaten roti, spilled daal or chewed drumsticks that made her feel like throwing up. Jagya never spared a thought about that. She remembered how Shiv had asked all of them to eat together, and now he has even fasted himself in support. Anandi left the office in daze, she had never met such a man in her life.

It was a busy day when Jagya landed in Jetsar bus depot. He immediately took an auto and asked to be taken to the canal site. But when he reached there he found only a couple of villagers lingering around. There was no sign of a protest going on, no sign of Anandi and no sign of any TV cameras too. Royally disappointed, he went and asked one of the villagers about the fast. An old man was sitting idle with his goats grazing around. Jagya went up to him and said: "Kaka what happened to the bhookh hadtal happening here?"

The old man looked up to him and said: "kyaa bhookamp? nahi beta, there are no bhookamps in our village"

"Nahi kaka bhookamp nahi, bhookh hadtal, the hadtal that Anandi was doing"

"What? anand? Aur beta what anand is left in this age? This age is only for suffering and waiting for death to call you"

Jagya grew extremely impatient: "Kaka anand nahi, Anandi, your sarpanch bitiya"

"What? My bitiya? Yes my bitiya Lachmi is married off to a very wealthy family, but they torture her for dowry beta, she is in a lot of pain'what will this old father do'" the old man started crying.

Jagya left the old man crying and walked away to another man. "These villagers are so worthless", Jagat thought to himself, "they are of no use. That's why I hate the village so much, but kya kare, I am majboor now."

He finally gathered information that the fast has been dissolved and the issue resolved. Jagya was disappointed at missing a chance to connect with Anandi again. He decided to go to her school.

Anandi was amidst her classes when Shiv arrived at the school. As usual, the girls were excited to see him and ran out to greet him. He handed over an envelope to Anandi "Ms. Singh, this is another letter that had come for you yesterday, I forgot to hand it over to you." Anandi read the letter and it informed her that as per request there will be 10 new computers installed in her school. A smile of happiness spread over her face and she thanked Shiv for bringing the good news to her. Shiv's expressions were emotionless.

Then he said with an emotionless voice: "Ms.Singh I have another suggestion for your school. You could ask for collaboration with the senior high school of Jetsar for admitting your girls into senior classes once they finish their primary education here. The purpose I guess is not to just teach them the basics, but also to provide them a higher education that can make them self-sufficient, which they can get only when they make a transition from here to the senior high school. Also your school has very minimal faculty members, so we can recruit some professional teachers too. I have talked to some NGOs and they are very interested in offering classes to the girls for free. This of course will happen only if you decide. You are the sole authority of this school, so it's upto you to make these decisions. I just felt it was my responsibility as a collector to let you know about the options. Please don't consider this as an act of pity again"

Anandi was blown over by Shiv's suggestions. She was touched by the fact how much Shiv thought about the school. True that she was only providing the girls some basic education, but if they are to succeed professionally they need more professional training. Anandi felt a little ashamed at how her school might have looked amateurish to Shiv. There were only three teachers'Anandi, Phooli and Gulli'and none of them were professionally trained. Moreover, the school ran on very flexible rules'they would often miss classes, cover for each other and it really needed some hard core disciplined education. She thanked Shiv for the suggestions and assured that she would work towards implementing it.

Just then something fell into Anandi's left eye and she could not open her eyes. Her left eye was watering and she was visibly in pain. Shiv rushed to her help and immediately stopped himself and let it be. He watched anxiously as Anandi struggled to bring it out and was unsuccessful. After a while he could not resist anymore and drew Anandi closer and looked into her eye. Anandi did not resist. There was a small leaf that had gone insid, her eyes were red and watering. Shiv took out the particle with his hanky, soothed her eye with his warm breath and massaged her eye gently. Anandi's eyes were still closed as he worked on them, and suddenly Shiv was mesmerized by her beauty again. He was holding her face very close, he could see every inch of that beautiful face---the loose hair on her forhead, her large beautiful eyes, her cute nose, the glow on her rosy cheeks and her beautiful red lips. Shiv was lost in himself and kept staring. Anandi too was in a daze. She was standing close to Shiv's chest and she could feel her manly body even through his shirt. He smelled of cologne and the smell put Anandi in a trance.

Just then Jagya entered the school compound and saw Anandi and Shiv together. He flared up seeing Shiv holding Anandi's face so closely and immediately went and separated them. Both Shiv and Anandi was jolted into shock, and Anandi was dumbfound to see Jagya there. Jagya was fuming with anger: "What is happening here? What utter shamelessness is this Anandi?

Anandi: Jagya tum yahan kaise?

Jagya: Shut up Anandi. I came here to talk to you about something important but here I find you two in a shameless situation'Gauri was right, you are so desperate'

"Hey mister", thundered Shiv, "how dare you talk about Anandiji like this? Mind your tongue'"

Jagya: Hello, I am her husband'and who are you? What are you doing with Singh family's izzat? Don't you have any shame?

Both Jagya and Shiv had held each other's collar and were about to hit each other. But as soon as Shiv heard Jagya's identity, he dropped his hands in amazement.

So this is the man! This is the man Anandi loved so dearly and he betrayed her ! This is the man behind Anandi's tears. Shiv felt a surge of anger rushing to his head and he raised his fist to knock Jagya down.

"Bas enough", came Anandi's voice loudly. She apologized to Shiv, dragged Jagya by his hand and left from the place. Shiv kept blankly staring at the two of them leaving, he felt a strange pain in his heart.
