How to Celebrate Petroleum Day

Whatever your feelings on using petroleum, the effect it has had on our civilisation is undeniable, and that's why celebrating Petroleum Day could prove very educational as well as interesting and entertaining. Celebrations can range from raising awareness of petroleum and its uses to trying to live a day without petroleum based-products in order to appreciate its value and impact on our lives. This means not only leaving the car at home, but avoiding mechanised transport, plastics and even frozen foods that may have petroleum wax packaging. If you haven't been convinced of how huge a role petroleum plays in all our lives yet, this experiment should make it clear beyond a shadow of a doubt. You could also try holding a petroleum party; during which everyone brings a petroleum-based item. You'd be surprised how much you can learn about petroleum just from this simple exercise alone! Whatever you decide to do, be sure to keep in mind that Petroleum Day is a chance to appreciate this valuable and versatile natural resource and remember that despite its many shortcomings, it has done an enormous amount of good for humanity.

It seems like every day that passes results in us accumulating more and more useless detritus in our lives. The newest tech toys, the newest kitchen gadgets, the newest whatevers, all got to be in our hands and there for us to use. Worse, we tend to use a lot of disposable containers and paper towels and just.. well.. stuff. All of this adds up on the environment and the world we live in, and Use Less Stuff Day encourages us to take a critical look at these behaviors and do what we can to cut back.

History of Use Less Stuff Day

"We really must understand that the lust for affluence in contemporary society is psychotic. It is psychotic because it has completely lost touch with reality. We crave things we neither need nor enjoy.

How to celebrate Use Less Stuff Day

Have you been using plastic bottled water? Get a filter for your tap and bottle it yourself in glass bottles instead. Do you usually stop and get a coffee in the mornings in a disposable cup? Brew yourself a pot at home instead and save some trees. Check your shampoo and facial cleanser and make sure it doesn't contain any plastic microbeads, as these wash down to the ocean and build up in massive volumes, and for Pete's sake grab yourself a bag from home and use it at the grocery instead of using the ones they provide. That's what Use Less Stuff Day is all about!

Take A Hike Day

It had to do with how it felt to be in the wild. With what it was like to walk for miles with no reason other than to witness the accumulation of trees and meadows, mountains and deserts, streams and rocks, rivers and grasses, sunrises and sunsets. The experience was powerful and fundamental. It seemed to me that it had always felt like this to be a human in the wild, and as long as the wild existed it would always feel this way.
Cheryl Strayed

There's a lot we could have chosen to say about Take a Hike Day, but we feel this excerpt from Cheryl Strayed's "Wild: From Lost to Fond on the Pacific Crest Trail says it all just fine.

History of Take A Hike Day

Take a Hike Day was established by the American Hiking society to encourage groups of families and friends to get out into the wild and really get a taste of what it means to be away from it all again. Hiking is something that really helps to rebuild our connection with nature, and helps to maintain healthy hearts and bodies as well. Hiking should not be an affair that one rushes through, nor should one idle their way through the journey, instead one should listen to their heart and body, and when restlessness strikes head out for the distant hills, and when weariness sets in let the body rest and take in the environment. Take A Hike Day reminds us that we are creatures of the wild as well as creatures of civilization, and sometimes it does our wild heart good to be taken home again and get out in the wild.

How to Celebrate Take A Hike Day

Seriously? It's right there in the name! Buzz off, get out, go away, take a hike! There are a million places you could go, from your backyard to the highest peaks in far-flung and exotic locations. When you hike take note of the things around you, from the towering trees overhead to the secret and elusive critters that live in mountain streams and in distant glades. You'd be surprised just what you can find by looking under the canopy of a tree, or with a quick glance under a bush. Take A Hike Day is your chance to reconnect with the fundamentally important things in life, the fresh air, blue sky, and deep rich earth underfoot.

The History of Unfriend Day

"Unfriend...maybe we should just start by clearing up how and when "to (un)friend even became a verb to begin with, after hundreds of years of the word "friend being a plain old noun you used to describe someone you had a good, close relationship with, and the word "unfriend not even being in the realm of existence. Oxford Dictionary's 2009 word of the year was, in fact, "unfriend, which it defines as, "verb To remove someone as a friend' on a social networking site such as Facebook. Christine Lindberg, Senior Lexicographer for Oxford's US dictionary program, explained Dictionary's rather controversial choice, saying, "It has both currency and potential longevity. In the online social networking context, its meaning is understood, so its adoption as a modern verb form makes this an interesting choice for Word of the Year.

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel founded Unfriend Day in 2014 to combat the growing trend of social media profiles collecting friends' like Pokemon cards, amassing a ridiculous amount of friends' they barely know at all in short periods of time. Getting rid of distant acquaintances on Unfriend Day can help streamline your internet experience, allowing you to use your profiles to keep in touch with people you really care about, and preserving the true definition of friend.'
