On 15th September we celebrate Greenpeace Day, so this is the time to release your inner activist and get passionate about the environment. The now internationally renowned campaign organisation for ecological issues was originally founded by a group of 17 activists in Vancouver protesting against off shore nuclear testing in Alaska on this date in 1971.

Since then, Greenpeace has achieved an abundance of victories over eco-crimes, as well as making an enormous contribution to raising awareness of environmental issues across the globe. They constantly strive for their vision of a society which recognises the Earth as an essential life support system whose resources are not infinite and must be protected and cared for. Their campaigns range from raising awareness of the receding ice of the Arctic to protecting the oceans and rainforests to working towards nuclear disarmament.

To recognise the contribution made by the organisation which came out of such humble roots yet now boasts 2.9 million members, Mayor Gregor Robertson of Vancouver has pronounced September 15th Greenpeace Day. In Vancouver, celebrations include a free family-friendly outdoor festival, tree planting and workshops on activism.

Be inspired by Greenpeace today: sign petitions and encourage others to do the same, be green in the home and out and about by switching off unnecessary light bulbs and throwing that empty wrapper on the street in the bin. Think bigger and look into volunteering and helping raise awareness for Greenpeace issues. Finally let Greenpeace Day act as a reminder that as the anthropologist Margaret Mead once put it: Never doubt that a ... group of committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has'.

International Dot Day is staged to encourage people of all ages to harness their creativity. The inspiration behind the event is the children's book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. It relates the tale of a teacher who challenges one of his female pupils to take courage in her abilities and from a dot on a page the youngster goes on to make her mark.

Real-life teacher Terry Shay brought this book to his class in the late 2000s and it was this that sparked Dot Day to life. It has grown from this one classroom to now be a worldwide celebration each year. Teachers can encourage students to get busy on the day with writing, drawing, painting, or other creative outlets and share this with the Dot Day website to inspire others. It's not just for students though and anyone can get involved to show their talents.

Historically, men and women wore hats not just as protection from the elements, but also as status symbols. Warmer felt hats were donned this time of year, replacing the lighter, cooler straw hats. Etiquette dictated what hats were worn for which occasion. Donning and doffing the hat (mostly required for men) was a good behavior learned at an early age.

Primarily made from wool, felt can also be made from the fur of other animals such as rabbit and beaver. Beaver was popular during the 16th and 17th centuries, but over trapping depleted the population.

The phrase "a mad as a hatter comes from the use of mercury nitrate in haberdasheries in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Over time, daily exposure to this metal caused these tradesmen to develop dementia, tics and other symptoms causing people to believe they had gone mad.

Over the centuries, many styles of felt hats have made their debut. We can identify an era by many of them. The Quaker will quickly be identified by its buckle, and the stovepipe reminds most Americans of one of its most beloved presidents. Others have odd names such as pork pie, bowler and stingy brim.
