9 — Happy Birthday Priya!

Priya was surprised to wake up on an empty bed. Ram usually woke up late. He hadn’t even told her was going to wake up early. Usually if he had some meeting or conference early in the morning he would request her to wake him up.

She discarded her thoughts and got up. She finished putting away the blankets and made the bed. Taking her clothes she went to freshen up.

Priya stepped out of the bathroom, lost in thoughts. She was planning her day in her head. LATELY, she had been thinking of taking up another job. Maybe that of a tuition teacher. On weekends there was a lot of time.

Her eyes went wide when she noticed the elaborate set up before her eyes. A table was placed in the middle of the room. It was said with food. Two chairs around the table. She looked at the curtain where a fancy text hung that read, Happy Birthday Priya Kapoor.

Her mood was spoilt. What was so happy about her birthday. Only last night she had told him that she didn’t like celebrating her birthday. He needed to learn how to respect what people said. She hated how he ultimately did what he wanted.

“Hey, up and ready huh,” He greeted. “Maine socha ki kyun nahi aaj special breakfast…”

“Aap ki problem kya hai?” Priya shouted in anger.

“Mujhe apna birthday celebrate karna nahi pasand. Kal hi aapko bataya tha naa?” She said enraged walking towards him.

“Har kisi ko birthday pasand nahi hota. Lekin nahi! Aapko toh celebration ka bahaana chaiye. Mujhe apne birthday pe akele rehna pasand hai. Lekin nahi… aap toh..”

Ram had been staring at her tight lipped. He was slowly getting used to her anger outbursts. Initially, it ticked his anger. But with time he understood that her anger rooted from hurt. So he tried to not take her words to his heart. “Bas,” He said, walking towards her. “bas Karo yaar,”

Priya stared at him with anger. “Yeh acha hai aapka pehle toh..”

Ram covered the distance between them, and placed his hand on her mouth. “Jab gussa aaye naa tab kuch nahi bolna chaiye, especially unhe jis pe aap kisi aur ka gussa utaar rahe ho. Bebe papa ko kehti thi.” He said not breaking the eye contact.

“Papa ka bhi gussa naa unke naak pe rehta thaa. Bebe unko kehti thi, thand rakhna sheek. Tumein bhi learn karna chaiye.”

Priya softened. She didn’t know if it was how close he was or his words that made her calm. But she was still angry. However her anger had lost power.

“Thand rakh Priya, tere birthday hai.” He smiled, putting down his hand from her mouth.

She narrowed her eyes at him.

“Priya Sood is history. Now, you are Priya Kapoor. A newer version of Priya. It’s time you learn to celebrate yourself Priya. No one will ever love you how much you can love yourself. It’s something I have learnt over time. You should too.”

Priya had tears in her eyes now.

“Toh, aaj se aap birthday bhi manaayengi aur thoda smile bhi karengi. Samjhi Madam?”

“Mujhe ye sab nahi karna.” Priya said stubbornly. She hated how Ram could change her mind so quickly. He could so easily clean years of conditioning.

“Yaar, problem kya hai? Tumhe apne aap pe garv hain na? Hai? Hai!” He tried to meet her gaze and nodded, like explaining to a small kid.

“you love yourself naa? Tum kitni achi ho Priya. Sab pyaar karte hain tumse. Lekin uss ek insaan ki wajah se tum apna birthday nahi manaogi. Yeh kaisi naa insaafi hai yaar?”

“Priya Kapoor, is going to celebrate her birthday, okay?”

Priya looked away wiping her tears.

“Oh Priya,” He said taking out his handkerchief. “Tissue nahi hai, lekin ye ek dum fresh hai.”

She smiled a little despite her tears and took the handkerchief from his hand.

“Maine naa bahiy surprises plan kiye hai. Abhi breakfast karte hain, phir Maa.. surprise hai.” He muttered, mentally cursing himself for the slip of tongue.

“bhuk lagi hai,” she said, giving his handkerchief back.

“Wo toh lagi hi hogi. Itna jo suna diya subhe subhe.”

Priya pursed her lips. “I am sorry,”

“Koi nahi, aadat hogayi hai ab.” He muttered with a heartfelt smile.

“main kaunsa itna gussa karti hun roz roz,” she muttered, moving to the table.

“of course,” He muttered.

“Sab tumhara favorite hain,”

Priya smiled and looked at him. “Thank you, lekin yeh kuch zyaada nahi hai?”

“sirf tumhaare liye nahi hai,” He said panicking. “Maine subha se kuch nahi khaaya hai. Maine bhi khaunga.” He clarified.

She turned away smiling. The food was too much for two people, but she couldn’t argue with him when it came to food.

“Just letting you know, mujhe party karna bhi pasand nahi hai.” She said as they began having food.

“I know, don’t worry I am not throwing you a surprise party.” He smiled, looking forward to the day. He had it all planned. He’d take her to the orphanage and then to her home for lunch. Nothing could beat having food cooked by Meera Maa. He was sure Priya would enjoy her birthday.

This is like so so good....The way your story flows & the words're also very simple yet they're efficient to paint a pretty good picture of the scene you want us to imagine👏....All The dialogues of Ram & Priya are so true to their personalities!
