5 — Father’s Day
Priya was lost in her thoughts as she ironed clothes. She was trying her best to not indulge in taking help for her daily chores, as much as possible from the servants.
Ram had tried to persuade her many a times to let the servants do the small tasks such as these. But she denied. She couldn’t explain to him how secure she felt not depending on anyone for anything.
She looked at the wall clock. It was close to dinner time. He was never late for dinner. She was close to sure that something was off with him. He hadn’t argued like every morning for a second chocolate or extra cream in his coffee. He was physically present but not mindfully.
“Hi!”
She smiled as he entered the room. “Hi!”
With a nod he moved to the other side of the room.
Wrapping up her task Priya stepped out like she always did to give him some space.
Priya was now certain that something was off with Ram. She had tried to ask Nandini about it but her mother-in-law discarded her observations without much thought. Priya felt very odd in the family. It was like a invisible wall stood between Ram and his family members.
It may be the fact that he was the stepson and the stepbrother in the family. She would have never guessed that Ram was not directly blood related to the other Kapoors had it not been for him telling her that one night as they were walking in the garden.
She reached the room where he sat in the dimly lit room all by himself.
“Aap walk pe nahi chalenge?” she asked standing at the door.
“Mood nahi hai,” He answered.
Priya silently stared at him. He was looking at something in his hand. She was in a dilemma. Should she ask him what was wrong or give him the space? She silently began to walk away and then stopped suddenly...
“Agar main chup chaap aise baithi hoti naa toh wo jarur mujhse poochte, jaane ki koshish karte ki baat kya hai... toh main kyun nahi kar sakti...”
Making her decision she turned around and walked into the room. She looked at him. He didn’t even look up.
He was sad. She sat on the floor beside him.
“Kya hua?”
Ram looked up surprised. He was so lost in recounting memories that he had failed to notice her presence
“Wo... main..” He rubbed the tear off his eyes.
“Aakhn mein kuch chala gaya,” she said, whoever he struggled to find his handkerchief.
“Haan...” He agreed.
She offered the end of her dupatta. “clean hai..”
He stared at her. No one had ever offered her kindness like she did. He had friends who loved him cared for him deeply. But Priya was different.
He quickly wiped his eyes, “thanks!”
“Toh, ye pictures..?”
“Dad ki hain. Aaj father’s day hai. I miss him a lot. Pura din yahi so sochta raha ki Agar wo hote toh life kitni different hoti naa. Bahut jaldi chale gaye.”
Priya didn’t have anything to offer. She hated her father. But he loved his father.
“Bahut pyaar karte thee...” His voice trailed off.
“Mujhe naa ... bacchpan mein apne kande pe baithaa ke ghum te thee. Aur world ke sabse best parathe banate thee.”
Priya smiled, watching him. She wished she could also talk like that about her childhood with that sparkle. A wish which would probably never come true.
Ram went on sharing anecdotes from his childhood and Priya listened to every word carefully. His vivid narrative drew a very lovely image before her eyes. With his memories she got to be a part of a childhood that was happy, a childhood that every child deserved.
6 — Sunday means fun day
Priya laid the stack of assignments on the table. She arranged the table, placed her pens and was all ready to do begin the task in when. But was interrupted...
“Priya, come on. Jaldi chalo. Tum humaari team mein ho. Okay?” Ram spoke, getting to her and holding her hand.
“Arey, kahan, kya?” She asked.
“Dumb charades. Kunal, Adi aur Brinda ek team. Mujhe uss Vikki ke saath phasa diya. Ab use saath Kaun jeet sakta hai yaar. Acting chodo, guess bhi thik se nahi karta hai.” He exclaimed.
Priya rolled her eyes. “Main nahi khel naa chathi. Mujhe kaam karna hai.”
“Aaaj kaam? Aaj toh Sunday hain. And Sunday means fun day.” He grinned.
“Phir kisi din. Mujhe ye saare assignments evaluate karne hain.” Priya said, pulling her hand back from his hold.
“Arey, main haar jaunga.”
Priya folded her arms and looked at him.
Ram stared at her. “So, you won’t come?”
Priya just gave him a point blank stare.
“Even if it means I am going to loose with a zero?” He tried his luck.
Ram looked thoughtfully. Convincing people was his day job. Priya was an excellent experiment. She was always so hard to convince. He looked at the stack of her assignments.
“What if I offer to help you with evaluating these assignments later?”
Priya was amused. “You are well versed with the works of Shakespeare?”
“Shakespeare?” Ram asked.
“Those are critical reviews on the works of William Shakespeare.” Priya said pointing to the stack of assignments.
“Oh!” Ram stared at them. “I know a thing or two about love, will that help?”
“They are particularly tragedies he wrote.” Priya said uncomfortably. The word ‘love’ made her uncomfortable. Love was an illusion that dumb people sold to the world.
“Of course, you gave the assignment, should have figured.” He muttered aside.
“Did you say something?”
“Nahin kuch nahi. Tumne kuch suna?”
“Nahi,” Priya said.
“Please, bolne se kuch hoga kya?” He inquired with pleading eyes.
Priya had to put in a lot of effort to not smile and not give in. His requests were always so innocent and small, almost nothing that it made it hard to say no.
“I can’t act.” She tried justifying.
“Thats why it's called Dumb Charades. You get it? Dumb... Anyways, the more the merrier. And I am sure you’ll probably understand me better. I mean then Vikky of course.”
Priya began giving it a serious thought. She looked at the assignments. She wouldn’t be able to release results in Monday’s class. Then it would only be on Thursday unless she decided to switch a period with some other teacher.
“Aap help karenge?”
“Help?” Ram asked confused.
“Excel Sheet mein marks enter karne mein.” She specified.
Ram was shocked, his mind froze. Priya asked for help. It was a first. She only said no to help, forget asking for it.
“of course, I would love to. Dono baad mein saath baith kar, minto mein kar lenge.”
“Ghante lagenge.” She warned.
"Cool, no problem!" He smiled.
“Chaliye?” she said.
He offered her his arm with a bright smile. Priya stared at his arm. She had often see Brinda and Shivi walk with an arm around his. An etiquette that probably existed since the Victorian age. However, to Priya it was an unnecessary dependence, also oddly intimate.
Ram understood her hesitance and extended his arm. “after you... “
She acknowledged that with a nod and walked past him.
He quickly fell in step, and said, “let me tell you the rules...”
A small smile played on Priya’s face at his excitement.
